    Default The Money Pit

Imagine yourself walking through the trees of a wooded island rumored to hide buried pirate treasure. Suddenly you come across a depression in the ground. It's roughly circular and there's a tree standing above it with a branch that has been cut and appears to have been used as a pulley. Your imagination is fired and hope soars. You run off to get your friends and digging equipment.

You and two friends return the next day, shovels in hand, ready to claim your prize. The digging is easy. The dirt loose. Only two feet down your shovel strikes rock. As you clear the dirt away you find a neatly arranged layer of flagstone covering a circular area 13 feet in diameter. You pry the stones out, expecting treasure but there's only more dirt.

You begin again. Digging down 8 more feet with no luck. Suddenly you hit wood. This is it. You scrap away the dirt only to find a platform of oak logs covering the pit. You pull out the logs and resume your digging.

Ten more feet and still nothing. Finally, you strike wood. This MUST be it. As you clear the area you find another level of oak logs.

Now you know there's something valuable here. Why else would anyone go to so much trouble?

Now 20 feet below the surface you heave to again. Another 10 feet. Another set of oak boards.

Disappointed, you and your friends decide that you can't go any further alone. You leave but vow to return to retrieve your treasure.

Now imagine that it's more than 200 years later. The pit has been explored to more than 150 feet. The treasure, if any, that was buried is still there, protected by an ingenious booby trap that floods the pit with sea water anytime someone gets close.

Group after group after group have tried to solve the riddle. Neither brute force nor technology have been able to overcome the problems. Six lives have been lost and millions of dollars spent trying to uncover the secrets of what has become known as the Money Pit. Still, no one knows what lies at the bottom, who built it or why. There are numerous theories but little proof.

This is the story of Oak Island, Nova Scotia, one the most frustrating and intriguing mysteries of all time.

Is there money at the bottom of the infamous pit? Or does all the pit have instore for its explorers is a waste of time? What do you think?

Is that really a mystery? I think that's kind of a cool idea, that there is treasure down there. I mean now a days, they have such inventions that they could use radar to see what's going on down there.

But if it were just me and a friend, when it became the first floor of oak wood.... I would have given up then and there.

    Nova Scotia! My home province!

I remember hearing about this story on CTV news back in the late 90's. I once went and seen the site but can't remember too much about it but I remember all the people around vowing to find the treasure deep down.

    I guess they didn't?

    Who buried it there again?

No one knows who dug the pit. Guesses range from Capt'n Kid, to the Aztecs.

    Interesting story.

Now I am off to Wiki, but it would be interesting to find an important relic, money, or ancient tomb down there.

This sounds like the sort of thing someone would do to annoy people to no end. If there is a box or anything down there, I will laugh if it turns out to be empty and there is nothing of value there.
Remember, for every interesting or cool sig you read, there are at least 10 boring sigs that make you hate reading sigs.

I doubt there's even any sort of treasure. It's probably just something some psycho made up to annoy people.

Yeah, probably a moral, or some stupid hystorical meaning to them.
There's no such things as burried treasures. And if there were, what or how much treasure will you be liable to find down there? Nothing enough to compensate for the casualties or the construction of the pit, i bet.
They should use explosives, or drilling vehicles.
Anyway, is this story even real?

Yeah, it's told all over Nova Scotia. The thing is, it's believable because a lot of pirates and eventually rum runners and other such great people used to either dock or sail past Nova Scotia long times ago.

To compound matters, Sable Island has some of the worst storms and currents in the world, hence many, many, many ships have crashed or been thrown against rocks and sunk.

So when you combine the ship wreck legends, pirates and rum runners abound even ships from the British Navy a very long time ago in the area over hundreds of years, it becomes easier to see how someone may have actually buried something there at one point.

Let's say the treasure was buried around when the Aztecs existed. Im not saying teh Aztecs built it. im saying it's around their time. if we've alreday dug over 150 feet was it? into the ground. And it's been what? more than two hundred years that they've tried to uncover it;s secrets? How can a group of people dig for that long, or even longer considering technology?

Siggeh made by me. Taking requests ATM! =3

Aarrg! Oy do happen to be a pirate meself. But oy neva burry me chest o gold and elastic underware. I spend it well and wear it well.
45 meters of digging for a trap sounds pretty inhuman. Maybe it was the Aztecs after all, considering them as weird as the Egypteans.

    Time to face logic here.

It would be impossible bury treasure so deep that no one would ever find it. Mainly because once you go so far you reach the earth's asthenosphere, and then you can't dig any deeper without passing into earth's mantle and thus, melting in the firey molten rock.

Another way to show what a waste of time this is, is by example of the time period the treasure is suspected to have been buried. The times of pirates, and some said Aztecs, was a very primitive time. They did not have the means to dig that deep. It would have been simply impossible for the people of that time to dig past that first layer of rock.

And you should know that 150 feet below earth... there is no more dirt, there is only limestone.

If they (the Aztecs) had the technology to build pyramids, they could probably dig a pit that deep.

That's a big generalization. Varies with the geological history of the site. There's also the possibility that the geology is artificial.

    I have to ask this.

Where the hell are you people getting Aztecs from in relation to Nova Scotia? Could half of you even point it out on a freaking map?

Vikings would be more probable (seeing as how they actually travelled in the general region), though they probably wouldn't have brought any treasure.

Yes, I can definately see that.. especially giving Nfld's closeness to their region and well, being the most eastern province in Canada.

Ha, I remember my fourth grade teacher telling us about this story. It's really quite interesting. I wonder what's down there... >>; IF something is down there. 0_o

It's what I love and miss about Nova Scotia. Such a rich culture and so many little legends and histories abound.

It's Nessie and Bigfoot's secret love nest. Why can't you people leave them alone???

Heck I was getting tired just reading the thing, even if it was real would it even be worth it? Thats a heck of a lot of trouble to go through for something like that, if there was anything it better be pretty dang cool.

Let me share you a secret about us Nova Scotians:

The majority of us are poor and bored, and half the time probably drunk.

Things like this offer HOPE that there is some magical way to get rich to the people there. Hope as in, not having to join the military to make a decent living and leaving the province .. *cough*

This probably applies more to Cape Breton .. but still.
