    Default Original is best

One good point also about watching anime in Japanese language is the fact that it's 99.9% original . Believe it or not I used to watch anime even before there were subtitles (VHS era) because I like to make my own impressions and imagine what the characters were saying similar to looking at a painting then making your own interpretations to what's the message. I had a lot of fun doing that back in those days. Even though I have no Idea what the heck they were saying I was still able to follow the story at least 50% of the time simply because of the acting the voice talents were projecting on screen. Now everything is solved by a touch of a button ON/OFF the subtitles or select the language if you have DVD .

Red Storm, Masali, and Darth Tyranus have all made great points that I agree with.

Another well dubbed anime series was Tenchi. Pioneer did a fine job in my opinion. Also, the original english dub for Akira is better than the newer version(s). I don't care if its been redone and digitally remastered, I still like the original dub best.

Vampire Hunter D is best with sub titles. The Fatal Fury (King Of The Fighters/Fatal Fury video games) movie was better for me in english.

And I tell you, most video games are better left in Japanese with subtitles, like Ninja Gaiden for X Box. And I really wish they'd let me play Sonic games in Japanese. Honestly I do.

Hero and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon are best in Japanese. So is every Bruce Lee ever made in Japanese.

Like it has been said, it all depends on what you are watching/playing. One is not above the other.

I prefer a good English dub over a good Japanese track any day. I like to understand what I'm hearing. And I'm in luck, because many English dubs these days sound like they're acted out just as well their Japanese counterparts, if not a bit better.

    that it's 99.9% original
What if the original isn't good in the first place? Take southern cross for example, the dub actually improved on the original making the characters have stronger relation ships with each other.
Another well dubbed anime series was Tenchi
Indeed, what was even stranger is the re-song theme songs were actually pretty catchy as well.

Default True anime fan here :-)

All I can say is that it's not entirely anime if it's not in Japanese meaning being able to see and relish the anime in its complete form the way the creators wanted it to be makes the anime for true anime fans like me more fulfilling to watch. It's a pity most of you need dubs in order to enjoy a show well that's probably fine if it works for you but let me tell you that depending too much on dubbed will sometimes miss-inform & lead you in the wrong direction due to cultural differences and monetary gains. Dubbers concern is to make money lot$ and lot$ of it from someone else’s work and they usually do a piss poor job at it simply because they usually don't understand the creators point of view and creativity.

    Here’s an example…

It makes me laugh almost every time when I see the beloved classic SDF-1 Macross in its dubbed form Robotech. This is a very good example when dubbers have all the power to change an anime. Macross was a very huge hit in Japan long ago and it became a legend in the anime world. What did the foreign countries do in order to bankroll on this phenomenon?

    1. Did they simply dubb it
    2. Did they do subtitles
    3. Leave it alone
    4. None of the above

If any of you choose no.4 then bravo! You’re aware of the ridiculous garbage of what dubbers are capable of doing just to make a buck. They completely renamed it; characters and anime itself were given new names to sound more American, rewrote the story and added footage not made by the animators. All because they believe they can “improve” on it.

There are tons of BS the dubbers of Macross fed to many of you...
If you still believe that the spacecraft was originally the flagship of an alien scientist named Zor, who was killed as he sent the spacecraft to Earth. then you people are hopeless. The ship was originally a gun destroyer that belonged to a group of aliens called the Supervision Army. After being damaged in a battle against their longtime enemies, the Zentradi, the Supervision Army abandoned the gun destroyer. It wandered through space for some time before reaching Earth. This is just a fraction of miss-information dubbers can make you believe if you believe them 100%

In a nutshell – Don’t depend too much on the dubbing of an anime. Use your other senses other than your eyes and ears to obsorb the story. Anime is a style of cartoon animation originating in Japan, with distinctive character and background stylings that visually set it apart from other forms of animation. If you take or replace any of those distinctive elements then it’s not completely anime anymore it’s just a cartoon modified to fit everyone else's taste.
BTW I don't hate dubbed entirely. I also get to watch dubbed formats on occation but frankly my first choice will always be subtitled. It works for me.

You claim that only those who like subs are true anime fans? So anyone who prefers dubs over subs are somehow not true anime fans?

That was like 5 years ago dude, dubs have been getting better and better since then. And cases like that are the exception rather than the rule. Let's see you name off five non-4kids anime from the past five years where major parts of the story were changed for the dub. Its a rare case. That's like using last year's E3 as an example to explain why all videogame conventions suck.

Then all you have to do is buy the DVDs. Almost all of them keep the original OPs and EDs.

For starters Robotech is awesome, it brought two shows that would have most likely never seen the light of day to america (southern cross and mospeada) and the dubbing cast was pretty great overall. And who cares if they changed the characters names, they are still the same characters nothing about them changed.

And they had to change the plot to fit the 3 shows togther, and they did a pretty damn good job on top of that. Since networks were not interested in an anthology show they had no choice. They didn't think they could make it better. And now you can buy robotech OR the uncut original of all the shows. So yes you can have you cake and eat it too. So quit yer whining.

And use my other senses to watch a tv show, could you be anymore of an otaku? I know, I'll smell and lick my tv and touch the screen while I'm at it maybe I can get a deeper meaning from the shows that way. I hope you understand you sound like an elitist moron spouting how only true fans watch subs and dubbing is the devil.

Don't act like the One Piece dub is the norm. Even people that are usually pro-dub hate 4kids. Actually, make that especially people that are pro-dub, because it closes the minds of you sub snobs even more, and gives you guys artillery. I can think of plenty of dubs that do it just as well if not better than the original track.

Berserk (I couldn't stand Guts' Japanese voice)
    Cowboy Bebop
    Ghost in the Shell SAC
    Yu Yu Hakusho
    Full Metal Panic
Fullmetal Alchemist (except for Al... meh)

And a lot more. Honestly, how could you jump on the acting in those? They never mess up in any scene that comes to mind, and all of the voices match perfectly. (though some people will disagree with me when it comes to Edward and Gluttony) Do you want them to sound exactly like their Japanese counterparts or something? Have you heard dubs where they tried that? It doesn't work. It sounds weird. Have you sub-snobs watched any dubs besides 4kids and old dubs? You can't judge something until you know what you're talking about.

Edit: This was aimed at Asc3

The obsessed otaku's are amassing... and soon it will be time for those of us with jobs to resist their attack.... =p

I can't believe a lot of whats being written and posted here. Its a lot of garbage that has no real truthful foundation, and is a lot of biased opinions by people who are just a "tad" bit too in to their cartoons.

How dare you insult us by saying that we're not "true anime fans" if we don't prefer to watch every anime with subtitles in japanese. That is a load of bull.

You flaming fan persons (and all of us whom aren't so biased know who they are) need to get a brain and realize that everything isn't so black and white. You also need to realize that some animes are best dubbed, and some are best in their original state. Also, realize that almost all of your statements are based in obsession and extreme fanism.

    And that's just not healthy.

I choose Subtitles! Dubbed voice actors are painful to listen to...they just...kind of make you hate anime...and the spoken english (in my case) language! But with subtitles, not only do you get the anime in its original format, but it can help you learn japanese (if you're interested) which not only introduces you to another language...but helps you get a better understanding of your own language.

Depends on the anime. Magic Users Club, for example, is dubbed very well. So is Cowboy Bebop and Trigun. But there are some that are... Not so well done. Blue Seed:Beyond, for example. I burns your ears.

But really, it doesn't matter to me. I'm a pretty fast reader, so I don't have any trouble reading an entire show. I prefer subbed, if it means I'll get the real story and I'll get to hear/read what the creators intended.
