2005 have been a great year in music history!
So, what are your top 10 albums from 2005? Why these albums?
My list is:
1. Nevermore - This Godless Endeavor
Definitive the greatest album of 2005! They've risen so much since the "Enemies Of Reality" thing. Really hard power trash metal of the best kind. The vocal performance is unique, and so great musical performance.
2. System Of A Down - Mezmerize/Hypnotize
Since this is meant to be a double album I take it as one point. SOAD has been great this year and delivered some of the most impressive lyrics I've ever heard. The musical part is awsome. Real heavy metal mixed with weird, but lovely pieces of eastern sound. The vocals are impressive both from vocalist and guitarist.
3. Opeth - Ghost Reveries
Opeth did it again, just with a bit of a twist. They've gone and become a bit more calm than before but it really works, even though the powerful work like "The Baying Of The Hounds" and "Ghost Of Perdition" really bring back the old Opeth feeling.
4. Rammstein - Rosenrot
Although this is the weakest Rammstein album so far, I still love it. It starts hard and heavy before the third track "Rosenrot", a song that is in my eyes some of the best Rammstein work ever. There are 2 things that ruins this almost perfect album:
Stirb Nicht Vor Mir // Don't Die Before I Do (Why the english version on album instead of the fulll german with Bobo instead of Spiteri?)
Te Quira Puta (stupid meaningless thing, you're german not spanish...)
5. Arcturus - Sideshow Symphonies
I haven't heard a lot of the old Arcturus, but the new is excellent. Powerful voice, ICS Vortex does a great job. Especially on "Hibernation Sickness Complete" and the last lines when he grimms, lovely. And the bit tired voice on the last track "Hufsa" (that is even in norwegian, something I love about Arcturus is their norwegian song). Last song is not really very special on the musical part, so the vocal holds the whole song something it does great.
6. Roadrunner United - The All-star Sessions
An album with lots of great artists and songs. Really a mixed album with artists like Corey Taylor, Dani Filth, Joey Jordison and King Diamond. My personal favorite is "In The Fire" with King Diamond on the vocals and some people from Trivium stands for the musical part, and I also think the song writing part.
7. Dark Tranquillity - Character
The best gothenburg metal album of the year, a lot of memorable songs like "Lost To Apathy" and "One Thought". An agressive and varied album. The musical part is pretty simpel, but it's very tasty. The vocals are also very impressive, not that Mikael Stanne have ever let anyone down on that part.
8. Kaizers Orchestra - Maestro
A norwegian... erm... what is even the genre for this band? Some sort of rock... Well anyway, great album. Lot's of good lyrics and music. Best realese since "Ompa Til Du Dør". A heavy album when it's about the musical part, but at the same time they push up everything again and give you good fast tone. They mix a lot of humor into their music like on "Knekker Deg Til Sist" and "Maestro".
9. Kamelot - The Black Halo
A very different album from what we've heard from Kamelot before. They're really exploring they're musical horizon by making it less power metal and more black metal inspired. This is really showing in the opening track "March Of Mephisto" where even Shagrath (Dimmu Borgir) guests. Roy Khan haven't really done anything new to his voice, but at songs like "The Black Halo" he's making his voice sound wonderfully desperate, a part that I love so much.
10. The Offspring - Greatest Hits
As an old all time Offspring fan, I've been waiting for this album a long time. All the great pieces of old school punk-rock is gathered here. "Come Out And Play (Keep Em Seperated), Want You Bad and (Can't Get My) Head Around You are on this. The new track "Can't Repeat" is the worst of them. If you like The Offspring, you need this gathering of their best songs in your collection.
I also want to add that the biggest dissapointment this year was "Korn - See You On The Other Side" a album I was really looking forward to after seeing them live and hearing "Eaten Up Inside". This is not good old Korn, this is "Word Up!" Korn, the worst Korn of it's kind. I hope they never do this again.
