Bad weather and snow

I am in Omaha, Nebraska currently, and I am heading to Des Moines, Iowa in about a hour. To beat the snow storm they are to be having there after midnight.

My question is how can anyone survive in the mid-west if 3 to 5 inches of snow is a storm? I was in Augusta, Maine last January and they closed there entire capital down because they were to be getting 3 inches of snow. At 5:00 p.m. even all the malls had shut down for the extreme 3 inches of snow they were getting.

I live on the east coast in Pennsylvania. 3 to 6 inches of snow is not a storm. I do not understand why these areas get all excited over a few inches of snow. Is it this way for everyone?

Strange. I like in Brockton, Massachusetts (13 miles south of Boston), and we got 5 inches just the other day, and everything still went smoothly. Also, last year we had 3 feer of snow, and everything went on as normal...for the most part.
Perhaps what makes the difference is the intensity of the percipitation? The Noreaster we had last Friday only gave 5 inches, but the wind speed of a Noreaster are close to that of a tropical storm, and the wind and snow combined to make the snow seem like a wall. I could hardly stand up outside, and the snow made it so I could not see more than 10 feet in front of me.
It is strange to treat a minor storm with semi-bad conditions like the blizzard of 1978...

In cambridge, Massachussetts - 'round 45 minutes from Bostom, we just got 6 inches. We prepare here. Unlike texas, where they see snow and question the sky falling.

Sure, you can make it, just get chains for your tires, and drive slowly. You'll be fine.

I have to be safe. I am in my Saab. My truck got hit by a deer earlier in the fall. So I cant have a accident with my car. Altho last week coming back from Lansing, Michigan I did slide off the road in the black ice. But then so did everyone else. I am just glad no one hit my car. Then I got like a mile from where I was going, and I slid off the road into a corn field because the roads in Indiana were pure ice. I miss my Pennsylvania roads. They are also prepared for snow and ice. We dont drive on that stuff hardly at all. I baby my Saab, it only has 338,000 miles on so far. About another 160,000 and I can trade it in. The dealership keeps joking that when I hit 500,000 miles on it that I have to trade it in for a new Saab from them.

The only time I remember places around her closing like that are for ice storms...which we seem to get. The ice was so thick one year I had to climb in over my stick shift and push the driver's side door open because even with de-icer we couldn't chizzel it out. Sometimes the schools close, like they did recently, but it has to be a lot of snow and the windchill has to be low enough. Usually that's when the issue a snow advisory and there are accidents everywhere. One of the accidents last week involved 25 cars. I guess here we just take it as it comes unless the weather gets too bad. We just salt and sand roads and issue snow advisories. ^_^

However, I lived in Texas for a couple years and they reacted that way when it was rain. And it wasn't pouring rain, just minor flooding--not like the floods we had a couple years later back in the midwest--and they were talking about if they would have to close school or release us early...we were from the midwest and were sooo confused as to why you'd release students because of rain. I don't know, sometimes people just act funny if the weather does anything which is scary because those people are usually the ones that cause the traffic accidents.

Same thing here in Sweden. Down south when they get like four snowflakes they go "The end is nigh! Bring out the bandwagons! Barricade the doors! We're all gonna die!". All of us living up in the norhtern parts just raise our eyebrows and continue making our way through the 2.5 feet deep snow we always get. (Well, used to get anyway, now with global warming and everything we're lucky if we get 5 inches ;)

Schools don't even close if we have a foot of snow, you got plows out early in the morning to beat the traffic, and then we have roads to drive on. It's not a lot. Nothing closes down really, due to snow here... schools will close if we get about two feet or so, stores I'm pretty sure are still open.

well, Im in florida....so no snow. barely even cold weather....I think the lowest its been here (for a while) is somewhere in the 50's.

It is like that where I live. It snows here every winter and they still go crazy when it snows over 2 inches. I live on the east coast and they still go crazy.

School has been closed here once in my lifetime that I know of. That day it was -40 degrees outside, and even then it wasn't really closed, just lots of people that didn't show up.

i live in Canada and 3 inches of snow..is not much..around here we get like 10 inches..but anyways have a safe trip! n_n

I live in the mid-west, colorado, as you can see right by my name, and no one really makes a fuss over here, then again colorado is one of the colder mid-west states. i think maybe the ppl were a little to hyped up about warning you, or you were in an area where there isnt much snow.

Only 3 inches of snow? Wow. I live in the northern part of Ohio. We get that wonderful lake effect snow (Lake Erie). Yeah, we get WAYYYY more than 3 inches.

Last year around this time it was raining on and off for a few days. And all of a sudden, the temperature dropped to about 5 degrees. The entire town was covered with ice. Trees were literally snapping over because they couldn't support the weight of the ice. And the trees were falling over next to the roads, so things had to be blocked off. Roads were pretty much hell, too. I think those were the worst weather conditions we've had here in a while.

I don't think 3 inches is too much to get worried about. When your town is an icecube, you should be a little worried. ^^;

Where i live there is no snow, but it is colder then it is suppose to be during winter and we are not use to it.

I don't know what I would do if I lived in a place that didn't get much snow. I'm in Alaska. I'm used to there being a lot of snow, and it being cold.

I miss the snow! My coworkers think I'm nuts because of how excited I get when it snows. There just isn't a lot of snow in my little valley. I am from Minnesota and am used to tons of snow. I remember getting school off because of snow, but that was because we got a foot of snow or more. Usually school was closed because it was too cold to go outside.
