The very "must be avoid" effects in photoshop is, Glow!! dont use glow/glowing edge or similar as that to the main character. to put a text, make sure it blend to the bg (I just learn this), meaning that you shouldn't put any shadow/glow/3d/emboss on the text.make sure the text color is not too contrast to the bg. I suggest black or grey. choose font that is suitable for the main character. for example, use grunged themed font for violent/grunge themed character.

Concept is pretty good as a beginner, congratz. I like the bg minus the text.

I use photo shop and corel draw. It rather fast and easy if you know how to use it.

Alright, ready? You proabably should have spent more than a couple minutes on it (it definately shows). Find a better picture, that one is very blurry, and check your extraction, some of the edges are jagged, and theres floating spots.
As for glow, eh, you just have to know how to use it. If you want to use it, use green or something, not the default yellowish color.
Bg's a good start, just find a much better picture, a wp's quality basically revolves around the quality of the main image.
