I'm currently enlisted in active duty Air Force, stationed at Offutt AFB in Nebraska.

My enlistment is up in December, and I do not plan to reenlist.

Thankfully I wasn't found fit to be drafted into the (Swedish) army. What a complete waste of your youth to spend it learning how to murder people.

If someone's not gotten it, the quote in my sig (from Stiff Little Finger's song Tin Soliders) is about joining the military.

Actually, as much as I hated being in the Air Force, I have to admit, it's very good for you. Everyone can benefit just from being in Basic Training for 6 weeks. As painful as it can be on you emotionally, you come out stronger, with a bit better work ethic.

My four year enlistment has shown me so many things that I absolutely hate, but on the other hand, it's taught me a great deal about real life. Let's face it. First off, people kill people. Wars happen, because of problems with how people are. I don't support these things, but avoiding them doesn't stop it from happening. Ultimately, I'd much rather join the Air Force as a programmer and do what I can to keep there from being a war than sit around holding up signs telling nobody who cares how we should have peace. I did have some M16 firearms training.. That's about as close as I got to learning how to kill people from the Air Force.

    Overall, I don't regret joining.

And the leaders won't stop waging those wars until people start to refuse.

Cool, I was talking to a friend on Guild Wars and he told me the Air Force is the best. They have the best uniforms, they have better food and work hrs(depends on the day). Also, they don't have to goto the battlefield, they just sit back and look pretty(So I was told). The U.S. Army has To Spend 1 Year in the battlefield (Iraq). The Navy has to spend about 5 years over there I believe. Also You in the Navy in training you must spend 6 months overseas.

But I plan to join U.S Army so they can fund my college fees and beecause I like their camouflauge uniforms. I don't know what job I want yet. I'm thinking of infantry.

These are rumors, many of which are incredibly stretched.
First off, your hours depend on the job you have. Most jobs are standard 9-5 type jobs, but some are absolute shift work, where you get the night shift. By 9-5, I mean 7:30 - 4:30 for me, but you get the idea.
As for food.. I've heard the same thing, which is sad, because I hate the Air Force food..
Now, when it comes to going into the battlefield, again, it depends on your job. Yes, the moment they send Air Force members out there as infantry, you know we've already lost the fight. However, aircraft mechanics, for example, can be out there in war zones, depending on your station, and if you are deployed. The idea that Army has to spend 1 year in battle is exaggerated at best. They certainly won't send people out to battle if there is no war going on, and they aren't exactly going to change the rules if a war does happen. It all depends on the job you have, and where you get deployed.

As for college, I don't know what Army has to offer, but I do know the MGI Bill is standard across all services. Where if you're in for 3 years, you get a bunch of money to use for school, whether you're still in the military or not. On top of that, the Air Force pays 100% of your college tuition while you're on active duty.

Personally, I think the uniform is probably the smallest part of the decision making factor. Yes, the Air Force is soon getting away from the camoflage uniform, and replacing it with a strange blue tiger stripe camo print.

I suggest you keep looking into all the branches to see which one suits you best, if any.

OOOh Thx for the info. Hmmm, blue tiger stripe camo ima have to look that up. So Air Force still is the best place to go.Btw Member Name may I ask your job rank and such?

I'm medically disqualified, but been working on getting a waiver for it for 2 years now...

If I ever succeed in getting one, I'll be joining active duty Marines for as long as they'll let me stay.

O btw the Air Force has people on the ground as well. Combat Control personel are spotters for air strikes and aerial insertions, security forces are Air Force soldiers who specialize in taking and defending runways, and of course you have your pilots who drop off troops and give air-support.

The Navy also puts people on the ground. One of the things I was debating on was which branch to join, Marines or Navy. Reason being is that the Marines don't have medics. All medical personel for the USMC is provided by the Navy. So if I wanted to be a medic with the Marines, I would have to join the Navy and choose to become a corpman and assigned to a Marine unit.

And of course all branches have Special Forces units, which is my ultimate goal should I ever get to join.

You're joining the army because you like their combat uniform? That's bad...that's very bad.

Anyways, yeah...I'm thinking of joining the military. But I'm fourteen, I can't enlist anytime soon. Not the Air Force, since I'm kinda bad with heights..AND when I'm in an air battle, I don't like the knowledge that there can be an enemy withing 360° of myself, and I have to look for them. Not the navy...once your ship sinks, you're dead. In the Army, you can rely on yourself.

Actually you can join the military on delayed entry in the United States at age 17 provided you ensure them you will graduate high school. Someone in my JROTC class did that and went through Army basic training over summer break between junior and senior year.

    I'm a Senior Airman (E-4) as a programmer.

And as for being scared of heights, the only time I've flown was to get to Basic, and to get from tech school to here. All my job is on the ground. I have never once been into battle, but if I wanted to, I could volunteer to go to the desert and work out there. The majority of the Air Force never flies. There are personnel on flying status, usually air crew, linguists, the like. Most people, fuel, aircraft maintenance, programmers, computer operators.. A great deal of us never fly unless we want to

Well, If I joined the air force, I'd want to be inside an F-22 Raptor, blowing Migs to bits. >_>

Yea, a section 8 is a very, VERY bad thing to get. It means you a psycologically unstable to the point where the government doesn't trust you. Basically, if you ever want to look for employment in the future, don't mention that...

BTW I don't think you actually got one unless you went down to a MEPS (Military Entrance Proccessing Station) and was screened there. He was probably just warning you that if you went that's what you would probably be branded as. Recruiters aren't qualified to issue those out.
