Wow.. is it actually possible AX is over and done with for a year? o.O Did I actually manage to get more than 4 hours sleep consecutivly(sp?) without any interuptions last night?! Man.. time flys when you're either trying to have fun, or making sure everyone else is. I really hope everyone enjoyed table top this year. We had one of the most sucessful years in tabletop than some of the last previous cons. Of course, with 33,000 attendies I can't imagine why we were so popular with our events. But That is neither here nor there. I've already begun work on next years scheduals. God willing, we'll have even a bigger room, and more staff.
A general overview of the events:
Magic The Gathering: MTG on friday was widely sucessful with a 62 person attendance count. Probably would have been more if opening ceremonies didn't get in the way.
Magic Booster Draft: God ... this was a train wreck. I thought that 250 lands would have been suffecient for a 24 person draft. Guess I was wrong. On the bright side though, everyone got a free deck of cards! So It couldn't have been all THAT bad. Next year, I'll double the amount of in house lands and we shouldn't have that problem again. We had 24 players in the draft, but we had over 84 sign up's for it by the time it was started. Guys, this rivled the yugioh tournament. ...I'd expect nothing less from Magic The Gathering. Next year I may be crazy enough to attempt a type 1 tournament. We'll see.
Munchkin Mania!: Nothing more fun than watching a bunch of dedicated gamers all huddle around a table as they each try to backstab, kick, punch, and claw their ways to the top of the level charts. Munchkin was an entertaining and a refreshing event to tone down the wilds of such high pressure events like Yugioh. We had at a rough count 30 players by the end of the con. The game was played several times beyond the origonal schedualed time.
YuGiOh: Dear god... I leave the room with a mear 17 sign ups for this event. I go to catch 3 hours sleep before the event, I get a phone call an hour early saying the room is exploding... and explode it did. We ended up capping the tournament at 83 players. Wild! Yeah, needless to say, we'll be doing this again next year.
BESM: Big Eyes Small Mouth. For those of you that aren't "in the know" BESM is the anime version of the time honored classic "Dungeons and Dragons." Books, Dice, a few laughs, and the fear of the one meglomaniacle homocidal maniac so lovely called the "Game Master" drives this style of game. During open play, we had about 20 players creating characters in a story event that lasted the entire con. The Tournament version pulled in 14 of the finest role players I have ever seen. The tournament lasted 17 rounds which drug out in real time to be about 5 to 6 hours. Some players were there 8 + hours as they attended last minute character creation early that same morning. There were several things about the players and their characters that are memorable but props must be given to the gentleman dressed as Sol Badguy from Guilty Gear X. His character not only went toe to toe with a 300 + point character (one of my own, an avatar for the event) but he also held his own ground for about 5 turns. This in itself is impressive, but he lasted an additional 2 or 3 turns back in the arena with everyone else with only 1 HP left!! A truely awe inspiring performance.
Well, thats about it I think. It has been fun and by all means stay tuned! Next year promises much much more! See you all at Anime Expo 2006!
