    Default Foreign languages in music

This topic came to me when trying to impart the wisdom of Rammstein on my friend. I love Rammstein (for anyone who doesn't know, they're a german band) even though I don't know german. I told him that I love them, but he said he can't stand them because he can't understand the lyrics. I however, have listened to them for some time, and actually consider the english language a handicap for metal groups, that german just sounds better.

So what do you think about languages that aren't your own in music?

As the mod for this forum I listen to a variety of music in many different languages. Whenever possible I track down translations for the songs (as you well know, Yojimbo, as I gave you a link to the Rammstein songs).Music is universal...and for me language is not a barrier (then again, I know enough of them). ^__^ I would like to say I don't have favourites, but that's not true. I have too many favourites! My most favourite song is in Finnish..."Aamun Kuiskaus" by Stella. I love the lyrics and what it says. I'm sure I have the lyrics posted here somewhere.

I love j-pop, k-pop, c-pop and of course english songs (duh!), even though I understand a little of their language. I can still get the point of what they are singing. But they do sound cute when they sing.

I'm not sure.. not being able to understand the language while listening to a song is distracting to me. I listen to a few songs that have other languages in them.. and some artists that don't speak English I like listening to. But for the most part, while listening to a song, I'd like to know what the person is saying. ^^

.. That's the main reason why I've never gotten the feel for J-Pop/Rock.

Probably Keine Lust, track 4 on their newest Album, Reise Reise.

I think that it's nice to be able to understand it, but if it sounds good, then I'll listen. Actually one of my favorite Rammstein songs, Dalai Lama, sounds better if I don't think about the lyrics.

I only listen to J-pop, J-rock, K-pop, chinese songs, Malay songs, Indonesian songs and english songs.
That's mostly the only things I listen to but I've heard of Rammstein before too.

Since there are like three acceptable bands/artists here in Kyrgyzstan, I tend to expand my borders within music to satisfy my fizzy urges.

And to answer the actual question in this thread, I have to say that I think foreign music is much better than the local one. Quite frankly because Kyrgyzstanian music sucks more than the toughest vacuum cleaner.

So, since I love you guys so much, I'll just put up a list of all the foreign languages I listen to in ze music!!1 lOlLz XDDDD

    • English
    • Norwegian
    • Danish
    • Swedish
    • Finnish
    • French
    • German
    • Spanish
    • Japanese
I thought there would be more than that. How dissappointing.

Japanese just, well, flows better sung than english, it sounds more poetic i guess you could say.

Can't say as though I have much experience with japanese music, but I can understand that. I mean, I like german metal because german is a more aggressive language than english and has very interesting sounds and nuances to it.

So what do you think about languages that aren't your own in music?
They generally sound better since you don't listen to it everytime. Not being able to understand it also helps since then you won't know if the lyrics are really bad or good. Kinda something about "ignorance is bliss" or something along those lines.

Anyone who can listen to music in a language which is foreign is open-minded in my opinion. Spanish, Japanese, Korean and even German are all languages i've heard musically, and I love it all.

I mostly listen to music in Japanese (I'm an anime fan, duh!) and German. Ever heard of E Nomine? They are a kickass german band
