When you ask about what is so fascinating about animes, are you referring to the art styles or animes in general (story, character, etc.)?

Well for me a 16 year old female. the fasination with anime/manga is a few things. Basically-
    1. I have been around it for a while and it is something that i know.
    2. i consider the artwork well great art, because the style is beautiful to look at, the facial/body expressions can be done in a simplistic manner and yet still protray the feeling behind the stance.
    3. Like books and life it can make you cry, laugh and angery.
    4. It allows me to enter a world that i cant reach in real life. The world of fantasy, adventure, danger etc. The adventures in the ANIME cant be acomplished in real life and that what appeals to me. Its sorta sad but anime has what i wish was a common thing in real life. Real life is boring, anime is adventure.

    hope that helped a bit.

Personally, for me it's always been the different plots. The artwork is also beautiful too.

Myself, a 17-year old, I am fascinated with animes because

    1. Unlike many american cartoons, animes don't sugarcoat anything
    2. Characters in animes are, in my experience, far more believable and interesting to watch and sympathize with than other cartoons.
    3. Creative and interesting art styles that can portray emotion very effectively.
    4. Many animes that I watch have some of the most captivating and thought provoking storylines I have ever had the pleasure of seeing.

What makes "anime" or Japanese storys so much different from other genres is that the entire culture was in solitude for several hundred years, giving it time to grow and "ferment," once they opened up to international trade western culture, the art world clinged to the ukio-e style and many western painters became "more flat" in their art. But probably the most drastic and dramatic part of their development is the fact that since WWII they have lived in a "Post-Apocalyptic" culture; we can see this in many themes of Anime and games (FFVII, Evangelion, Cowboy Beebop etc.) I supose it would create a mood of regrowth and fear at the same time, opening up doors for new ideas as well as grasping firmly to old traditions and lifestyles which we also see in other anime (Samurai X, Inuyasha, Bushido Blade, etc.)
These are just some little things I've picked up along the way. I am currently 18 and a die-hard anime/game fan, as well as being in love with the Japanese art styles (of past and current). Personally I enjoy the entire Japanese experience; one can loose themselves in the history and culture.

Hmmm... First of all, anime can be anything, 'cause anything in this world (object or subject), from typical boy meet girl yada, yada to current issues (war, social problems you name it). And it some elements can be merge or mix -up into an perfect or good storyline. It has wide range of genre to choose from. Anime can be view or watch by all ages and walks of life. it's depend on the content of the anime and it's target group.

Anime is lot different to any animation industries, 'cause most of it has moral values and issues behind it. There are also life lesson insert inside which make you wonder what you will do when you being in the character position at certain situation, and you will ask it's right to do it or otherwise. anime can cynically (if my word is right) laid out any current issues topic without causing the certain party feels uneasy or threaten by it.

All in all, anime is art which more that showing animated drawings, marvel action and love theme, it's a good medium to send positive message to the viewers and think about it.

    That's all from me....
