hEY, i I don't know the answer to this one so can you guys help me?
A man walks down the street carrying a basket of eggs. They are not broken and cannot be broken so they have to stay whole. He runs into person a and sells him have of his eggs plus 1/2 of an egg. He runs into person B and sells half of the remaining eggs to him plus 1/2 of an egg. than he runs into person C and sell the rest of his eggs and 1/2 of an egg. How many eggs did he start out with and why?
The above was an extra credit question form my math teacher, could you guys help me get the answer plz? pm it to me or post it here. Thanks a bunch. I bow down to you and will rep you up as mcuh as I can if you get me the right answer, I promise

Found this one in a riddle book I have :].

The answer is 7 eggs. The first person buys one half of his eggs plus one half of an egg. Thats 3 1/2 + 1/2 which makes 4, leaving 3 eggs.
The second man buys one half of his eggs and one half of an egg. Thats 1 1/2 + 1/2 equalling 2 eggs. This leaves him with 1 egg.
The final man buys half of his eggs and one half of an egg. A half and a half makes 1. This leaves him with no eggs.

but if the eggs are whole and cant be broken, so I don't get it, can you explain

Okay, okay. The answer to the riddle is an odd number. If you take half of an odd number, you'll get a number and a half. (Half of 7 is 3 and a half)

So, each person takes a half of all the mans eggs, with half of an egg.
(3 and a half plus a half = 4) No eggs are broken.

Is that a little clearer?

If he has 5 eggs, he gives half of his eggs(2.5) and half of an egg (0.5)

(2.5) + (0.5) = (3)

Then the next person buys the remaining egg(0.5) and half of another(0.5)

(0.5) + (0.5) = (1)

Then the last person buys the remaining eggs(0.5) and half of an egg(0.5)

(0.5) + (0.5) = (1) -------------------------> 3 + 1 + 1 = 5

Half of 3 is 1.5

Going by your theory...

2.5 + 0.5 = 3.

1.5 + 0.5 =2

1.0+ 0.5 =1.5

okay... *sigh* I'll try to re-iterate what he was saying. half of 7 is 3 and a half. if you add 1 half to that, it equals a whole number (4) so none of the eggs are broken. get it? I took AP calculus when I was in High School so if you think this riddle is hard, be prepared for some that are much harder if you ever take harder math than you are now. I don't know any good riddles mself or I'd post one. later. hope I helped solve your dilemma.
