I agree. A sound is just moving air particles until those particles go into an ear.

tree falling = vibration
vibration + ear = sound
vibration = sound - ear
tree falling = sound -ear
falling tree = vibration

it is circular. there is no correct answer because although the vibration is made into sounds by the human ear, the same works for animal, insects, and such, so they would hear the sound even if a human were not there. And, because the vibration is the sound, as long as the vibration exists, it is a sound. Although the vibration may not be being used by a creatures ears in order to indicate the sound to that creature, the vibrations are still there. In the case of a nothing being around the tree as it fell, it could be assumed that a sound was made but not used, or rather, it is a sound waiting to happen.

Technically, a sound is when those vibrations touch the ear, it's not a sound until then. And he also said "no one's around to hear it" which implies no animals.

even if the animals aren't there, the other trees can most definitely hear the noise...sorry, i'm a freak lol. i don't know if anyone else believes trees can hear things...but i do for some reason!
