Do you prefer subbed or dubbed to watch anime, and why?
I easily prefer subbed anime no contest.
A.)Subbed anime tends to give a much more accurate and literal translation because they dont have to alter words to match the movement of characters lips.
B.)You actually hear the original japanese voice actors, whom tend to be much more trained in voice acting and tend to be more talented. The amount of seiyuu's in high regard is astounding and I can only think of ONE well known dubbed voice actor... Tiffany Grant (Whom did Asuka's dubbed voice in Evangelion).
C.)For international viewers only: Horrendous American accents... ugh!
D.)The worst thing of dubs and notorious for Tokyopop: When they try to make the dialouge more "cool" and "hip". When they do this I feel like spraypainting the royal dalton (A unique expression for throwing up).
E.)Subbed anime tend to give a more "authentic" feel to the anime.
Okay sure dubs are "easier" to watch but the negatives far outweigh the positives.
Subbed
ionno it actually depends i guess. ive seen all my InuYasha Subed so im pretty used to it. Dubbed is ok. i dont really care wut it is (subbed or dubbed) as long as i can understand what they're saying.
I liked dubbed cause I'm lazy to read but if it only got subbed then i don't mind.
I like dubbed becuse I'm lazy too but I really hate most of the characters voices I like the origenal voices so much better.
Subbed
1. It just fits with the anime allot better i think
2. It helps me learn =]

Subbed, but if I know bad stuff is in it and my little sister wants to watch...I go with dubbed.

subbed...because a good 80% of dubbed are horrible.....

Not only that, but eventually you can memorize the words spoken to the words subbed. I'm trying to learn Japanese, i'm too poor to aford a English to Japanese dictionary, so this is the best i'll get.Originally Posted by Don SGI
i probably prefer subbed because i prefer the original
sometimes dubbed is bad which can ruin the whole anime
I agree.Originally Posted by Don SGI
The orginal voices are better. In some dubbed anime the character's voice doesn't suit him at all. But there are times I watch dubbed but that only because I can't buy the subbed any more since there out of stocked. And also I have learned japanese word from watching subbed

There are many shows that have been subititled with a worse translation than some of the dubs even have. Conversely, some of the dubs are translated incredibly well. The translation of a show is not just about literal translation of the words that are used. You have to make cultural translations as well. Rather than working on reading cultural notes WHILE trying to read the subtitles, you could just have a different cultural reference made that more english speakers are likely to understand. You will find some shows need the literal translation, and some are better with a cultural translation. It just depends on the show itself.
The voice actors, I don't know how many times I have to say this, quite often the Japanese voice actors are JUST as bad as the English ones. It's very easy to place them in high regard when you don't have all the experience in listening to Japanese that you do with listening to English. The voice acting is not "better" in Japanese. It's just harder to discern. There are some shows that had excellent (or at least decent) voice acting in the English version. I.E. Trigun and Cowboy Bebop. Even most of Samurai Champloo was pretty good. Each of these, I watched in Japanese first, and then watched in English, because I wanted to see how it was done.
Don't even get me started on Aussie accents =P
Tokyopop, yes. I agree with you there, to a point. No reason to try to add dialect when it doesn't fit with what you see on screen.
Authentic, maybe. But sometimes you gotta open up your mind and not be so elitist about what others do for your entertainment. This argument is like the Manga being written right to left, like Japanese manga. I wouldn't have any problem with them translating the manga to a left-to-right style. It doesn't lose authenticity if it's done well. Same can be said for dubbing vs. subtitling.

i love sub for some and dubbed for others...the ones that i prefer in dubbed are the ones that i watched in my earlier days...i'm so use to hearing the series in english that i sounds weird in the original jap..these series that i prefer in dub are slayers next and try, oh my goddess ova, ranma 1/2, MKR I and II, here is greenwood, shinesman, and a few more series...however one series that i can't stand in dubbed is one piece...in my opinion it was totally destroyed in the dubbed version and i can't stand sanji's voice...

Don't forget mispronounciations...they really get on my nerves...like with what they did to basically every japanese word in the Naruto dub....Originally Posted by Don SGI
And there it is. I honestly just hate dubs. Once you get used to watching fansubs or DVD subs(although fansubs are much better), you can see how bad most dubs really are.

subbed is better.. because translations may not be that accurate..

Both. It doesn't really matter to me. I'd watch either one.
I prefer Subs, but some Dubbed anime is okay--Slayers was pretty well done--I can flip between the two in some cases YAY for DVDs!
SIDENOTE: anyone remember when there weren't any DVDs and you had to buy/rent the subtitled version and the Dubbed version VSHs. haha, good times eh.

Dubbed, reading is for poor people. Now get in the kitchen and make my chicken!
i dont usually have a choice but i dont know japanese so i like dubbed anime. plus i have a 'horendous' american accent myself so i dont think the voicovers are too bad. ive noticed the subbed versions have higher voices sometimes which is kinda wierd to me, but anime is anime to me. i'll watch either.
"Idle hands are the devil's playground..."
well.. that is true. i could watch both. there is a disadvantage too in using subbed... you have to focus on the show or else you wont follow the story. while with the dubbed, you can go to the kitchen and still follow the story by turning the volume higher. still conversations may not be accurately translated.
