Default Anime generic and all the same?

Hi I have been watching anime in a club for 5ish years. I am wondering if anyone else feels this way? in our club we are watching fairy tail and I just cant get into it cause to me it is the same as dragon ball z. Natsu fights character and beats them, Goku fights character and beats them. My friends are like its awesome and I just don't get it. Or like we watch guilty crown and I was like this is the same as code geass. If I wasn't in this club I wouldn't have watched guilty crown. Or like we will watch a harem anime and my friends are laughing at things in it and I'm not. I'm like yeah it was funny the first time when the one lady was a horrible cook and ruined supper but not the 500 time.

Has this happened to anyone else?

    Thanks

Anime is a lot like sex. Done right it's a beautiful act of creation that brings a little more light into the world. If it's sick and wrong... it's even better.

    Thanks
Well, Fairy Tail and Dragon Ball Z both are long running anime from the shonen anime genre so similarities will obviously exist between the two. The fact is, any medium is truly like this and almost all mediums have been doing this for almost the start of the medium's creation. Dragon Ball Z wasn't a new idea completely even in 1989 and anyone who thinks it was is very naive and truly doesn't understand anime.

Err, only if you think DBZ was 100% original.

To answer your question in the OP, there are these things called "cliches". They exist in anime, books, American films, and pretty much any sort of entertainment. If constant action-packed fight scenes aren't your cup of tea, you should probably steer clear of most mainstream shounen series. Seinen might be more your speed, considering there's usually darker, more mature undertones in general.

Anyway, what kind of anime did you start off with? Chances are you can look up similar ones online that you might like. A lot of mainstream anime nowadays is overhyped and cliche'd into oblivion, so it's easy to see why someone would get bored with them. Watch some in your own time and find what you like.

No, but I've come to notice people often use Dragon Ball Z as a core example of anime that copied or used elements it did. Like Ryutama (best girl) said, anime is full of cliches. Though, any medium has them and its something you can't escape very often. Generic anime aren't always bad, but its understandable how one might get tired of seeing the same situations tackled in different ways.

My advice differs from Ryutamas, but is pretty close. I'd try something with less cliches in hopes you like them:

    Gun Buster (1989)
    Ergo Proxy (2006)
    Bakemonogatari (2009)
Dance in the Vampire Bund (2011)

    All four are pretty unique.

Yes. Anime is indeed becoming quite generic. But, I wouldn't call all anime "all the same." I mean, I've seen a lot of shows that are equally all like each other. Nothing is ever original, nothing is 100%. You got to realize that. But, lately, "generic and all the same" has taken it to a whole new level. Black Bullet can be reminded of Attack on Titan by many people. But, it gets worse, ohhhhhhhhh, it gets worse. There's a new anime coming out sometime whenever god knows when, called Kuusen Madoushi Kouhosei no Kyoukan. Description:

The story is set in a world where humanity, driven off the land by the threat of magical armored insects, now live in aerial floating cities. Thus wizards — aerial combat mages who fight the insects with magical powers — came into being.

Kanata Age (Eiji) is a young man who lives on the floating wizard academy city of "Misutogan." He was once celebrated as the "Black Master Swordsman," the elite ace of the S128 special team. However, he is now despised as the "traitor of the special team." One day, he is assigned as the instructor of E601, a team that has suffered 10 consecutive defeats. E601 has three girls — Misora Whitale, Lecty Eisenach, and Rico Flamel — with one or two peculiar quirks.
Where I have heard this one before? Let's see... Black Bullet, Mahou Sensou, Hidan no Aria... the list goes on. Not sure how much father I can take this list. But this rips off almost everything I've watched in the past year. Some anime just... aren't even trying to be different anymore. There's another show that blatantly ripoffs everything I've seen. It's called Juuou Muujin no Fafnir (Or Unlimited Fafnir by some). Description:

With the sudden appearance of the monsters that came to be called Dragons, the world had completely changed. Before long, within the human race supernatural girls with the power of the dragons, called "D", were born. The secret existence of the only male "D", the boy Mononobe Yuu, was forcefully thrown into the school where the girls of "D" gathered - Midgar, where he saw the naked body of one of the students, Iris. Furthermore, meeting his long lost sister Mitsuki, Yuu seems to have been enrolled into this school...!? "When there's really no other choice, Iris, I will — kill you." "Can I really... believe you?" The curtains open as the "one and only story" about the boy who was supposed to become the strongest assassin and the incompetent girl unfolds—! Unlimited School Battle Action!
Doesn't this sound a lot like...

Only a pure maiden can have the privilege to contract with a spirit. In here, Areishia Spirit Academy, trained maidens of noble families are gathered and given an elite's education to become spirit contractors. A boy, Kamito, peeped by accident at a girl, Clair, while she was taking a bath and he ended up making a contract with the spirit she wanted. Yes, Kamito is an irregular boy spirit contractor whose existence was thought impossible until now. "You stole...my spirit...you have to take responsibility for it!" "Huh?" "You have to become my contracted spirit!" What will Kamito's destiny lead to?
Thought so. So, each season, we have that one show that ripoffs another from that season or the season before.

My point is, yes, ideas are becoming the same of each other. Is that a bad thing? No, not necessarily. I've seen a lot of shows that pretty much knock off almost everything else, and I've been fine with watching that stuff.

Also, lol, almost everything tries to be like DBZ, let's not even go there.

I'm going to need to strongly disagree. The comparison between Attack on Titan and Black Bullet is a pretty forced comparison. The openings are similar, but that has nothing to do with the show and the concept of humanity's struggle for survival is a plot that is seen in far more mediums than anime so it isn't shocking numerous shows of one medium share that concept. That's like saying Black Bullet is a rip-off of The Walking Dead based on the central theme of the show. In fact, saying a show rips-off another show is far from correct. Firstly, most shows are based off some sort of source material so if anything they are using themes from manga, visual novels, etc. Though, I still don't think generic cliches or similar storylines are a rip-off. For example, Terra Formars is just using the "humanity's struggle for survival theme", which is a very common theme in mediums and they've been using it long before Titan.
