There are a lot of horror games out there. What ones do you think are the scariest?
I have to go with Five Nights at Freddy's. I've seen several 'Let's Play' videos of this game on YouTube, and let me tell you:

As the great warrior-poet Ice Cube once said, "If the day does not require an AK, it is good".
The old Resident Evil games are probably as scary as it goes for me xD
Especially Resident Evil 3, with Nemesis randomly jumping through windows.
i realize that scary games are a genre in and of themselves, but i don't get anything out of jump scares, which is the most common method of cranking up tension levels in scary games. i've never played a game where i was afraid based on atmosphere. it always just something jumping out at you and not really even scaring you, just startling you.
take F.E.A.R. for instance. i like first person shooters a lot, and i could not enjoy F.E.A.R. because it's "scary" elements were built on jump scares, i.e. you turn a corner and something rushes at your face. i HATE that sht.
i'd like to play a game where tension is created by atmosphere, not by anticipating the next thing that's going to jump out at you.
Resident Evil and some game on the DS where you are trying to escape from a hospital. Name escapes me right now.
Outlast.
Only game that has actually scared the crap outta me.
No power in the 'verse can stop me...
Ain't exactly a full game, but I played the demo for the upcoming Silent Hill game, and that was the most uncomfortable experience I've ever had playing a video game.
The game isn't built around jump scares, but rather an atmosphere that just creeps the bejeezus out of you. Can't wait to try the full game...
For some reason I thought mentioning the older Resident Evil games would be out of place as newer games can so often be scarier, but I see that several of you have already mentioned them. To be specific, Resident Evil 2 scared me the most, especially when you go into the interrogation room for the second time (it was clear the first time, so you don’t expect anything to happen at all) and a Licker bursts out of the one-way mirror. It’s a masterfully-done moment and the fixed-angle camera makes it even scarier.
Jump scare =/= horror.
Anyway.
Definitely Superman 64.
My mood on a daily basis
No one's mentioned Amnesia? Disappoint.
People talking about needing more atmosphere in a horror game, try that Scheisse out. I liked the Insanity gauge in the game, really amps up the need to focus and immerse yourself in order to avoid screwing yourself over, instead of just relying on a high health bar.
Of course it has its nice share of jump scares, but imo it's creepier when you KNOW it's coming. Jump scares for me are usually like "Oh, ok. That was unexpected, moving on." Whereas when you're expecting something to come at you at any moment, it really adds to the tension. Then you get that overwhelming wave of relief if nothing actually happens. That kinda stuff is everywhere in Amnesia, and with the random encounters, you really can't judge whether or not you're safe, no matter where you are. Much spooky. Very tension. Wow.
I'd say Thief 3. In general, the game wasn't really all that scary at all. Except in one level where it completely blindsides you, and puts you in an amnesia-type level called The Cradle which is a haunted orphanage turned insane asylum (or the other way around? It's been a few years). Stroke of genius, that level.
Hey look, Japan made a movie about me!
I know I'mma sound really pleb here but I think imo it's Five Nights at Freddie's.
Maybe it's the fact you are trapped in one room with limited battery. If you run out it's game over. I dunno how to explain it...but it's just that trapped/pop-up atmosphere that I really, REALLY dread.
Everything is fine then.......BAM FOXY IS RUNNING DOWN THE CORRIDOR....I'm sure people who have played this game can get the feels...
Previously Darkfire Knight....
For me, it's a tie between Kuon, Silent Hill and Rule of Rose. I'm generally not a fan of horror games because when I see those horrible creatures, they almost always become my nightmare, it's pretty annoying. -_-

Thanks to Ms Lucy for this awesome, funny gif.
The person that you are now is not the person that I used to know. You're becoming a stranger that I've never met before. Not liking the change though.
F.E.A.R. and FNAF.

If you would allow it, P.T. was probably the most horrifying experience I've had in a long time. And as a fan of horror games that says something. The build-up is perfect, you expect jumps so much you don't expect it, then BOOM, Jump scare near the end you don't expect because you expected it, But it wasn't a cheap jumpscare, it fed off of the atmosphere.
I expect great things for Silent Hills
Doom III, Diablo II & III, Resident Evil, Dino Crisis, Silent Hill, Illbleed, games like that.
well, I have to say, "5 night at freddy's" is a lot scarier than the whole resident evil series combined XD
The simple yet intriguing game-play makes it top even the most sophisticated horror games ever made
"Slender man" is another simple yet scary game, these games are the hype these days
