Well i've build one.. sorta. It was mainly a friend of mine who put it together, i was the one that payed for it and looked in awe as i saw him doing his thing.

Either way, i didn't really want to make something amazing, simply because i didn't think it was worth it. But, its good enough to run the the most recent games.

If you want you can press on this link to see the things that are in the PC.

If you happen to be too lazy to press it, then in short

Intel Core i5-4670 (its better than you'd think)
    Club 3D Radeon R9 280X RoyalQueen
    240 GB SSD
    1TB HDD
    8GB RAM

I built 2 machines back in 2010. I still use both.

    Machine 1
Processor: Intel Core i7-950 (First generation Core i7)
    Motherboard: Asus P6X58E-PRO
    Memory: 24GB of Kingston HyperX (DDR3 1600)
GPU: nVidia GTX470 (First generation Fermi)
PSU: Kingwin Mach 1 (1000 Watt with PFC)
Case: Antec 900 (I don't recommend this case, no dust cover!)
HDD: 1TB Western Digital drive (still works amazingly)
Optical: HP 1260i Multiformat DVD Writer
    Displays: two 25.5'' Asus VW266H

I used it to finish my dissertation work. I ran a lot of my experiments on this machine (some of which were written in CUDA!). It still works perfectly, but now it's used mostly for Diablo 3.

    Machine 2
Processor: Dual Core+HT Intel Atom D510 (soldered into the motherboard)
Motherboard: SUPERMICRO MBD-X7SPA-H-O Mini ITX Server Motherboard
    Memory: 2GB of Crucial 200 pin DDR2 667
Optical: LITE-ON Slim CD/DVD (internal drive, if you ever intend to get a slim drive, be sure to purchase a SATA to Slim SATA cable as they do not have standard SATA plugs)
Wireless NIC: D-Link DWA 556 (Atheros chipset, first generation 802.11n chipset)
Case: Winsis Wi-02 Mini-ITX Tower Computer Case with 200W Power Supply
HDD: Some laptop SATA drive I had laying around.

I built this to be a small personal router/server. It serves Wi-Fi and wired Internet, SVN, Samba, NFS, and OpenVPN. It also periodically synchronizes firewall rules from emergingthreats to block all sorts of cybercriminals. It runs FreeBSD and it just works.

    Default Re: Custom PC Builds

I learned that buying pre-built computers sucks. I've bought my own gear custom ever since I learned about 10 years ago.

Anyways, I bought and built this about 18 months ago. All custom. As far as futureproofing goes it's pretty much going to be bulletproof for however-long-it-lasts. Which I hope is 6-7 years, but I doubt it.

    ______

Case: Corsair Vengeance C70 mid-tower gaming case
    Motherboard: Asus Sabertooth X79
    Processor: Intel i7 3930-K 12-core (6 physical cores + hyperthreading), O/C'd at 4.2Ghz
Processor Cooling: Corsair h80 closed-loop liquid cooling with custom Corsair Air SP120 Static Pressure fans to replace the stock ones (they get noisy). The h80's fans are doing their work as case fans instead. Saving up for a h100i and more fans.
    RAM: 2x Corsair Vengeance PRO 8GB DDR3 2400Mhz (overall: 16GB)
    Graphics: PNY nVidia GTX660 XLR8 edition, 2GB GDDR5
Disk Drives: 240GB Kingston HyperX 3K SSD hooked to the 6GB/s port, and a 2TB Samsung 3GB/s SATA HDD for non-important stuff.
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium, SP1.
Gaming Peripherals: Xbox 360 controller, Logitech G27 steering wheel, 27" 1ms-response Asus gaming monitor (whoo whoo).

Photo of the system before I swapped the stock fans (ignore the green RAM. I'd just gotten it back after having the water-cooler installed (( because I didn't install the cooler myself I got someone else to do it )) and they didn't take the old RAM out even though I told them the Vengeance RAM would blow them up. Guess what happened? They blew up when I booted.

I know what you're thinking. The graphics card sucks. Yes, I know. I bought it on purpose, because I wanted everything else to be bulletproof and the 660 is more than capable of handling everything on high/max at 720p. I'm getting an 880 later this year when they release. Then I'm set.
