    Default Headphones/Ear Buds.

What's the best set of headphones or ear buds you've got, is paying more for brand name actually getting you quality sound?

For me personally, I've found a pair or two that have been great and have been given one that was decent. Almost any type of ear buds I buy, save for a couple haven't mustered any better quality. I've got some Skullcandy, Panasonic, Samsung, Koss, and several others that I don't remember the brand name or were gimmicks that have been branded for other things (like my Boeing ones). So far the best ones that I've paid for were the Skullcandy and Panasonic. I found a pair in cart at Wal-Mart that have been pretty great, and the old pair of Koss's that came with a portable cassette player (ancient technology for you young'ns) have also be great.

I only go cheap now. In fact, I wouldn't even use headphones anymore if I didn't have a wife that liked to sleep undisturbed at night.

Got sick of buying nice headphones only for them to bust no matter how well I took care of them.

Well, more expensive headphones usually have better parts and therefor probably better/clearer sound.

Then again, I don't listen to a lot of music. And mainly use my headphones to watch anime. So i'm totally down with cheap ones.

Ear buds.. well i can hear the difference between a pair thats 20 cents and a pair thats 20 dollars. But i wouldn't hear any difference with ones that are very expensive. Probably just me.

I got my current headphones from a sale. These headphones have speakers on them, but I haven't ever used the speakers. I primarily use these headphones for listening to music or listening to the audio of video games and videos that I watch.

I generally use my Turtle Beach for listening to music/stuff in my house. Because bass. hnnnnnng.

But out-and-about I have a pair of $50 Sony earbuds, which do the job. They're not perfect though, unfortunately.

For the longest time I had a pair of Sennheiser earbuds. They cost me $60 back in like 2005/2006? I had them up until last year. I've yet to come across any passively-powered headphones that sounded better. They were loud, clear, and the bass was amazing. I miss them. :-<

my mother once bought be a pair of Sony earbuds for $20 and they had the clearest, deepest sound i've ever gotten from earbuds. unfortunately i slept with them in one night and in the morning i woke to find that i'd rolled onto the cord of one of the buds and bent it, so now they're in a landfill somewhere.

i also bought a pair of $80 Shures, over-ear, that lacked the sound quality of those cheap ear buds. so in my experience, price does not determine quality.

For out and about I just use the earphones that came with my phone. But while at home, whether it be watching a movie, playing a game, listening to music, I use my Turtle Beach PX5's. Which when I first bought them cost me $350. Good head set, has lasted me years, though I'm currently looking for a new set to use for gaming mostly.

I used to have a pretty nice pair of $30 generic headphones I got at radioshack which were awesome and sounded like $70 or more headphones...then I accidentally yanked the cord from the jack when I stood up. Twas quite sad

I go for cheap earbuds, even though I'm more of a headphone guy, since earbuds tend to fall out my ears way too often. Even if the sound quality is terrible, you can always adjust your sounds settings to suit your cheap earbud's needs. Now my $5 pair of cheap earphones sound as clear as any expensive pair you'll find out there.

I have some cheap skull candies. I only use them to watch movies on my laptop. I very rarely listen to music through headphones. No matyer how nice headphones sound, they'll never be able to compare to the sound quality or volume of either my car or home system.

I just go for cheap headphones. The reason why is because it tends to get broken because of accident. In the past, I bought headphones twice, and they were broken twice by my brother. He stepped on it and sat on it. Maybe he has a grudge with my headphone. I had earbuds too but they hurt my ears, so I'm never buying them again. The headphone I'm using now is NIA headphone which I bought for $28 (US$23). It's cordless, so I can listen to music from my micro SD or just connect them to computer to listen to music and watch movies.

    Default Re: Headphones/Ear Buds.

I'm an audiophile, so my standards with sound quality are ludicrously high; which means I end up paying silly amounts of money to get the sound I want.

I've owned a pair of Sennheiser HD 650s for well over 8 years now, and, as pricey as they (still) are, I've yet to find another pair of cans with such beautiful, dynamic and immersive sound. As far as I'm concerned they're worth every penny I paid. They have a very likeable (if slightly coloured) soundstage that never fails to entertain whatever musical (or movie) genre I throw at them; and though they may sound a touch too warm and refined for some, I'd sooner take those characteristics over the technically "correct" yet clinically soulless sound that seems to be the order of most cans these days.

I understand that not everyone is into the idea of paying several hundred pounds/dollars for a pair of headphones though; which is cool, but when I consider that I'd be paying like 20 times as much to perceive the same level of fidelity in loudspeaker terms, £350 for a pair of cans sounds like a bargain in my eyes--well, it's as close as I'm going to get to a high-end sound system anyway. Also, as you'd expect for that money, not a single part has broken with these cans, nor has the sound lost any horse power. Being specifically designed for hi-fi use, they certainly don't win any awards for versatility; stick them in an iPod or Smartphone and the tiny amps in those devices would struggle to drive these power-hungry cans--not to mention, with the higher sound resolution, they would also be more critical of compressed sound (such as from MP3 files). But give them the proper respect (i.e. a dedicated DAC/headphone amp and high-resolution audio player) and the sonic difference is so immense that it's very difficult to go back to anything less.

Edit: Just to add, and to directly answer the OP's question: In my case, yes; my Sennheiser HD 650s made a mockery of my cheaper former Sony VR 900s in every department; and that's having said that the latter did have nice sound for the money (at least by Sony standards) and enormous power handling. However, I don't think paying more for a brand always guarantees better quality sound, which is why at the very least, I gave my HD 650s a thorough audition before committing to buy them.

    Default Re: Headphones/Ear Buds.

I got a beats by Dre Headphone from some Junior of mine.....
    I don't even know why.

I don't think there is much difference in the quality. If you're comparing earbuds and headphones there might be.
But I can't see any difference between my usual Headphones and the one given to me.
Of course, the ones given to me are cooler looking >.> but thats it. Otherwise, in the sound quality area... nothing.

Myeah, I have to stand by this.

A few weeks ago I was at Sheffield and mooching around the city-center HMV store. I decided to check out all the headphones that were there to see if any of them sounded any good. There were several different brands and variances of Skullcandy, Beats, some Bob Marley-branded ones O_o and a few others.

I had on me my fairly old Sony earbuds and the headphones allowed me to hook my own phone up to them to be able to compare. Needless to say, despite what I've heard about the Beats headphones they all sounded the same - a letdown ... and in fact, I heard no difference between the Beats and Skullcandies - all of them. Kinda quiet, a bit muffled. Treble wasn't overly clear and the bass wasn't that pronounced either. The Bob Marley ones were a little better bass-wise but still not worth the £150 or so they were wanting for them.

I eventually found a pair of Sennheiser earbuds mixed up amongst all of them on the rack. They were £40. Given my previous experience with Sennheiser gear I was quick to buy them. Two words: Loud. Bass.

You know grozit's bad when some £40 Sennheiser earbuds beat the grozit out of £150-200 Skullcandy and Beats headphones. They're -not- quite the same as my old, busted Sennheiser earbuds but by far the closest I've gotten in ten years, and better than everything I own sound quality-wise excluding my Turtle Beach X12's because, y'know, those are USB-powered and if they didn't sound like they were made out of 20" subwoofers strapped to your brain then something would be terribly wrong.

I'm sorry, Dre and modern mainstream hipsters. I'm so sorry.

I've heard good things about beats, but I'm still wary of icon endorsed stuff. Apparently Dr. Dre was an audio tech at one time as well as a DJ and producer, so he's got more of an idea of sound quality, but that doesn't always mean they product will be great.

I used to buy 20$ earbuds that broke every 3 months, than my now ex-girlfriend gave me a pair of headphone from the brand WESC.
They were worth arround 80$ (received the headphones 3 years ago) and they still work great to this day.
He's just a dandy guy, in space.
