Turns out my mate switched his computer off last night for some reason.. :/
I'll inform him that he needs to leave it on for you guys.
Edit - Turns out that it wasn't just turned off but that he somehow managed to completely break it. He wont explain to me how but it isn't working anymore.... *facepalm*
Sorry! D:

Hey yall, are you running the server in Windows or Linux??? Anyone who knows the linux side, I'm attempting to set up a Minecraft server in a Debian (Wheezy) VM. I've been running into problems with java though. I installed openJDK, but I guess I should also have access to java6 or 7. Also, I can't seem to get the download (wget command) to work. I keep getting a 404.
AFAIK Minecraft doesn't really like OpenJDK. Then again, not a lot of things do.
As for the 404, is it attempting to get the Minecraft server or the Java install? If it's the latter, it's because Oracle have for a long time been very stodgy about installing Java on Linux due to security issues and afaik were intending to remove all Linux-based support. If it's the former, why don't you just try finding and downloading the Linux server from the Minecraft website via browser?

Can you apt-get a browser? I have a minimal install of Debian, cmd line only with no GUI. If I really have to ill taskel the GUI in.
So I wound up re-installing Debian, and changing some network settings. I got the download working, but the configuration is a total PITA in wheezy. I might try installing squeeze and trying it out.
The sole reason I stopped using Ubuntu and went back to sticking with Windows. That, and playing games through Wine gets annoying after a while.
Anyways more seriously, have a look on http://minecraftwiki.net because I'm pretty sure there's a wiki page on there that documents how to set up a Minecraft server on unix-based systems. Personally I'm more than happy with just running Windows' Minecraftserver.exe but meh.

Sorry I've been MIA but I can try hosting again but it'll be 2/3 weeks at min before I can again. Currently in the middle of a move.
Yeah, I'd like to just beat this, but I'm losing lol. The problem with the minewiki is that it is all for Squeeze. The Java download and configuration is completely different. I was using Debian's howto page to get it done, but its pretty vague. It wouldn't let me do everything in root because of edits made to files in /etc so I had to log in as my user and start the config. UGH...Ok, windows it is.
So I finally broke down and bought MC for PC. My buddy set up a sever and we played today for a few hours. A question for you guys, when trading off server hosting, what is involved? My friend doesn't want to leave his on all the time, which is understandable. He has a pretty consistent schedule, so I'd like to be able to host it during his off hours.
I think the main thing is making sure everyone you want playing has both your IPs to connect to either one whenever one of them is up.
That said, it mostly involves swapping the server world between you whenever you switch - but Minecraft worlds quickly get into the hundreds of Megabytes and uploading/transferring that stuff might be difficult or might take a while unless you know each other IRL and can swap a USB stick with the data on to copy it off of.
That, or just have two separate worlds and not worry about the fuss. :/

i play. message me if you want to sometime. idc
Thinking of doing this again with the realm service. Hopefully it'll have less lag then when I tried hosting it and people can come and go as they wish instead of being limited to when my computer is on. I'll only be able to have 10 people on max at a time and only 20 white listed total but given last time it shouldn't be an issue. We will have to do a new world though and can't mod. Tell me what difficulty you guys want too and if you know any good seeds.

EDIT: Also, you'll have to disable any texture packs you're using. According to the site they will cause issues and you might not even be able to connect.

I haven't played Minecraft in forever. a Realms server would be good though so long as we don't get random griefers.
... Why would texture packs cause issues though? The default textures hurt my eyes like crazy. :I

@Ranshiin The site simply says it's not supported. You can try it but it may prevent you from joining. And can't get griefers since people have to be white listed.
EDIT: You can try it. Might be best to try one of the less drastic ones though.

I'm down. I haven't been playing as much, so this would be something to get me back in. I like normal survival.
