What would the world be like without makeup?

It's a question that has been bothering me for a while. It really is a wonder how makeup can transform a not-so-attractive girl, to an unbelievably attractive girl. And I'm thinking that, if makeup was not invented, perhaps guys wouldn't easily be infatuated, and... we wouldn't be so many today...

Okay, maybe that's a bit shallow of me, but what do you personally think the world would be like without makeup?

Same here, there's a certain level in which it makes a girl look sophisticated for a formal event and then once it goes past that level you might as well dress like a clown as the amount plastered and smeared on the face is ridiculous

I don't know really. I like makeup, but only to a point. I find it fun to play with and see what I can do with it, kind of like dressing up, but I also dress up nearly every day if you want to get technical. Some people can overdo it, and if you don't do it properly, you come out looking like a clown or a prostitute. So it can both enhance or ruin someone's natural beauty.

I do think it was inevitable to happen the way society works. Not to go into a feminist rant or anything, but it's no secret that women have been looked down upon and ridiculed and shamed and only wanted for one thing in most places for a good portion of history. Makeup makes them seemingly look better, so it picked up, and has stayed because by now a lot of us just like it, though some still won't go without it, and it just seems natural for women to use it. Plus, vanity and personal appearance are generally considered fairly important anyways. Why else would hair stylists be one of the most recession proof jobs in the U.S., or why else would tribal women wrap copper spirals around their necks that serve absolutely no purpose beyond elongating it?

So I do believe society would be quite different without it, purely because it would need to be a lot different for it to never come around without having something else similar to it pop up in its place. We have many different ways we try to enhance our looks beyond just that, especially in different cultures. As for what you said about us "not being so many", if we didn't have it then natural would be normal, which would mean we would have a completely different standard of beauty, so that probably wouldn't apply.

I wear very minimal make-up on a daily basis, so I could generally live without it. HOWEVER - cosplaying would be much less fun without make-up!

But I know what you mean @Marvel annga - my BF work nights in a hotel. He is always amazed at the transformation. Ugly girls check in during the day, then when they are ready to hit the town they look like total stunners! Until they return to the hotel in the early hours, carrying their high heels, stumbling and crying cos they are so drunk... hair extensions and false eyelashes have fallen off... LOL.

But how the world would be with out... well, I think the focus would come on clothing and sciences of it. There's currently a scientist working on clothing that you simply spray on. I could see that technology evolving.

a little makeup doesnt hurt. a lot of it does. red lipstick is the worst, it makes a woman look like a carnie.

a world without makeup wouldn't be hard to adjust to for me. most of the women i've been attracted to have worn none.

A world without make-up would be better somehow, less hiding behind something you're not. True beauty is hidden inside of you, not outside.

Not that my opinion is necessarily based on personal experience; but I imagine that a world without make-up would be a lot less expensive and less animals would be tested on potentially harmful chemicals to name but a few benefits. Also, the beauty industry and the media would have to find other ways to make people feel worthless unless they hide their natural features by some other lie means.

Hopefully people would be less obsessed with celebrities when they realize how ugly some of them are without it. Katy Perry is an excellent example.

I mean, there is a whole gamut of make up users. You have women who use a little or a lot or its a daily ritual etc... I dated a girl who never wore make up except for events or special dates and I thought she was beautiful without make up but when she did wear make up she was flat out gorgeous. Then I dated one girl who wore it everyday and it would take her an hour- hour and a half to apply it. She was drop dead gorgeous but it was always irritating to see how long she would strive for that perfect look when I just didn't care. I have seen her without it and I thought she looked gorgeous anyway, but that is the thing. For woman, they will wear it to appeal more attractive to men but in all honesty they are doing it for themselves. It gives them that boost of confidence. Some women I have talked to feel naked stepping out of the house without some form of makeup on.

In my honest opinion, I believe that makeup is only needed for performers (stage, tv, etc) because it allows the audience to see the expressions (and on tv well gives the "natural" colour the lights take away)
Other than that I see makeup as something artistic and I admire those who have superb makeup skills
but I do not consider it a beauty enchant per se. Beauty after all derives from inside, so no matter how much makeup someone has on they can not hide their true beauty or ugliness at that matter

I can always see past the makeup either way.. if a lot of makeup on a girl makes her more attractive for you then you're just immature in my opinion
