It is still a mystery to me why most people enjoy drinking alcohol. There are so many things I don't like about alcohol, like how bitter (ex. beer) it is and how difficult to drink it (ex. liquor). I'm also allergic to alcohol; my whole body itches like crazy after I drink. What's more, excessive drinking can be pretty harmful to health; not to mention the hangover...
I feel the same way you do. That's partly why I'm straightedge because I don't understand how doing something like that can be considered having fun or having a good time.
well seeing as how you're allergic to alcohol, i can see why you wouldn't want to drink it lol. but not all alcohol is bitter or hard to drink. there's a tremendous variety - I'm currently drinking a Redd's Strawberry Ale (i know it's early, i got off work 3 hours ago so shutup) and i'm sure, if you weren't allergic to it, you'd enjoy it. it tastes like, really super good n shet.
yes, alcohol can be detrimental with long-term abuse. having a beer after work or relaxing with some pals is hardly damaging, though. hey, the egyptians had nothing to drink but beer (they didn't know how to purify water and beer was heated enough to kill bacteria), and they got along just fine. built some pyramids i hear.
Just because you don't enjoy something doesn't mean others must justify their own enjoyment of said something. People like booze; it doesn't matter why just as it doesn't matter why people like chocolate cake. You could argue that the modern, first world, college student's attitude towards binge drinking is unhealthy, but you didn't, and I doubt a single sober college student will tell you his/her binge drinking is healthy. Doing anything excessively isn't healthy. And, you don't have to drink booze; you can cook with it, too. If you don't want to drink booze; fine. The only people that care are superficial jerk-offs who have about as much sense as a can of tomato sauce, and yourself.
Alcohol is the leading cause of random time travel and sudden and immediate loss of money. Its truly a mysterious thing, worthy of meticulous study; preferably by drinking it.
I think for some people it just helps to pass the time. I know that back around my college years I'd get drunk just because there was nothing else to do, and it made otherwise mundane things like watching TV or playing Ridge Racer a bit more interesting for a few hours.
I got bored of drinking alcohol though. True story.
It sends signals into your brain to inhibit certain things, much like getting high but with different chemicals in the brain and different responses from the body. Thus when inebriated one tends to feel a certain way that they may enjoy. From there, people tend to split into two different ways. Those that continue to increase their state and those that try to maintain the state they're in. Those in the former group are usually the ones that get into trouble after a few (with others or in some cases the law). Those in the latter tend to be the ones we normally see chugging away on a regular basis and keeping their cool about things.
Good ol' Dogs never Die, they just keepin on livin' till their time comes.
I was born in AF Chat, molded by it, I didn't see AnimeForum until a few years after I decided to register my username.
I don't like alcohol either. I've tried many different kinds (light, flavored, etc.) and many different brands (highly recommended by different people who used to not like alcohol either), but am yet to find one that I can tolerate. Even for light and fruity flavored champagnes, I can only tolerate a sip or two, before secretly tossing the rest into a planter (to make it seem like I'm not a spoilsport).
My brother-in-law's family drinks a lot of wine, so I've always heard that there are health benefits to drinking a glass of wine after a meal. They eat a LOT of food and drink a LOT of wine, and yet none of them are overweight, which leads be to believe that this is true -- but I just can't tolerate the taste no matter how many I try.
This reminds me of an old conversation that I had with my dad. I was all like "Dad. Dad. Dad. Dad. Dad! Stop drinking you're destroying the family..."
If that didn't get you right in the feels then I don't know what will.
Anyway, my really depressing anti-joke leads me to my topic: Respecting alcohol. My dad is a recovering alcoholic and has been sober for 5 years now but it begs the question, how should I treat it? I used to be afraid of it but now I respect it. Alcohol is a fascinating ingredient for all cultures and civilizations. Each nation has there own alcohol they boast, there is so much history with wine, liquor, and beer. Goodness, I could go on and on and on. I love it so much that I actually collect and study different types of liquors and wines. I have been on a huge cocktail kick and every night I try to make a new cocktail to experiment with different mixers and alcohols. It's truly fascinating what you can make and even learn the science of making a well balanced drink.
Most of all, I love the social aspect of alcohol. I love going out to the bars on the weekends with my group of friends and enjoy a cocktail or two and just laughing and having fun.
lol whats not fun about it? yea hangovers kinda suck. but the amount of fun i have in a night is totally worth it.
If you dont understand why its fun and can't just go for it, then i guess that your curse to live with. In the mean time, me and all my buddies are gonna have a great time drinking, socializing, chasing girls, and making memories to talk about for the rest of our lives.
I don't drink much. I'm a social drinker but even then I don't have much, usually only 2 drinks whenever I'm at the pub. Partly due to the fact that I've been trashed before and it sucked donkey and I never want to get that drunk again. So knowing my limits I stay well below that now. Also my friends can be rowdy when drunk and nothing sucks worse than getting spear tackled with 15 beers swilling around in your guts, then fifteen minutes later getting elbow dropped in the stomach so from experience I only drink a little. Plus two of my friends are unfortunately binge drinkers and need to be watched when we're having a party or out on the town so I try and stay sober enough to watch out for our group in a crisis.
That said, I don't have a problem with alcohol or the people who drink it, unless you're a binge drinker. There is fun to be had in getting buzzed with your mates and making a bit of an donkey of yourself. You lose your inhibitions to some extent and even crappy jokes can be hilarious. Plus for some reason I find people get more philosophical when they get drunk. The deepest conversations I've had with my mates have happened whilst lying drunk on the sand of a beach or at a footy field gazing up at the stars. But drinking solely to get so hammered you can't walk, talk, wear clothes or even remember the night you just had...That's so utterly pointless and stupid to me. Binge drinking is a big problem in Australia and I see it a lot, but not everyone drinks to excess. For the most part there is nothing wrong with it.
As for the actual taste, I hate most spirits unless mixed with dry or cola or something. There's no satisfaction in a tasteless liquid that simply gets you tipsy and leaves a vague burning sensation in your throat. I might as well swallow matches. But I do like beer and like sampling all sorts of imported ones and finding which countries make nicer beers and such. The bitterness does take getting used to, but that goes for stuff like coffee and tea and dark chocolate as well. A couple of tastes and you'll either like it, love it or absolutely hate it.

so, what's so good about alcohol? :\
This is a very broad topic. There is good and bad about everything. Moderation is the key, with just about everything. And taste is very personal, I for one love the bitterness. But I love plain unsweetened white grapefruit juice, fresh lemon or lime, fresh bitter rhubarb stalk... beers are rated in bitterness IBU's (international bitter unit I think) and 50+ IBUs is starting to get really bitter for most folks. IPA's are probably the most bitter beers and those are my favorite, some 100+ IBUs. There has been some studies showing that some of the bitter compounds in beer can have positive health benefits.
Someone else made the comparison to chocolate cake. Some people like it others dont. I'd like to make a different approach and say that beer is probably better for you than cake. While some of the ingredients are similar, cake is highly processed, with bleached refined flours and processed sugars, and those sugars are often sited as being worse than alcohol or fat in the average persons diet, in a lot more foods, and just as addictive. Look at many marathoners, they wont eat cake but they will have a few beers or wine. Beer on the other hand is usually all natural, and about the only thing bad about it is the small amount of alcohol in it which is really only a problem in excess.
I didn't like beer at first, heck it wasnt until I was around 30 that I really started drinking it. I had only tried the common mass produced beers, and never cared for them. But I was never really introduced to the smaller more unique craft beers until years later... thats pretty much all I drink in the way of beer now. I just love the huge variety of different types of beers and the vast character and tastes of each. I enjoy wine as well, and there are all sorts of studies showing various health benefits. Heck the one book I am reading now on Endurance Training and Racing, by Dr. Phillip Maffetone says drinking water or pretty much anything with a meal actually is bad for digestion and he says fermented beverage such as wine is the only thing that will aid digestion instead of hindering it.
I dont get into liquor much, only on rare occasion if I'm out with friends. I think less good things can be said about them from a health perspective, there its just about feeling good. However I've had some home made Eau de vie which is made from distilling home made fruit wines such as plum wine, and the taste was fantastic. Like better than any store bought plum amplified into the perfect drink. Kind of like brandy, but more fruity, not from grapes, and not nearly as high in alcohol. Its like the perfect way to preserve the taste of fresh picked fruit. I'd really like to start growing my own grapes and fruits, and besides using them for fresh eating and such, making wine and Eau de vie.
The key is obviously moderation. And I honestly have never even been drunk once, and dont mind keeping it that way. Though I may incorporate beer and wine into my daily routing, its 1-2 glasses and thats usually it. I think I've only been past the point of being able to drive 3-4 times which isnt bad seeing how I'm in my 30's. Never had a hangover. But I don't want to promote alcohol drinking unnecessarily, and especialy to the young crowd!
I actually have a beer I've made a tradition to have with anime or reading manga...
Dogfish Head Raison D'etre
Cheers!
Not my most favorite beer or anyhting, but its name has special meaning. Raison D'etre meaning Reason for existance, and also the name of the opening song in my favorite anime Claymore. Some theme song really suck, and I often skip past em to get to the start of the show, but I just love the opening and closing sequences of Claymore and both the opening and closing songs.
Its cool having a beer neamed after my favorite animes theme song! It freakin sends chills down my spine to watch it sometimes. Now I need to go get a beer lol.
Lol, funny to see something like this right after I just finished off a Svedka bottle last night. With a friend of course.
Being allergic to alcohol, makes it kinda obvious why you wouldn't like it lol.
In general though, having a couple drinks now and then isn't necessarily unhealthy. So long as you don't binge drink every other weekend like a lot of college kids will boast about, then there's not much to worry about. You don't need to get hammered to have fun. Just two or three drinks and you'll find yourself laughing and enjoying yourself more than usual.
As for the hangover, you can prevent that by having a glass of water for each drink/shot you have.
I've never understood either. They always say that it's an acquired taste. But I can not, for the life of me, understand why I'd want to acquire it. It's a waste of money and I think I've already destroyed my insides enough with soda. lol
I love drinking! It's a big part of 'Aussie Culture'. I generally prefer wine, and usually I only have a couple of glasses. I find it delicious and very relaxing. It also helps when I have a headache or a cold. And it's a great way to get my 2-3 serves of fruit each day ;-)

That brings up an interesting point. I wonder if any legitimate comparisons between beer or wine and soda have been made. I'd wager soda, especially the regular kind, is worse for you. The jury is still out on artificial sweeteners though many in the past have been found to be bad, and now ironically it seems they mess with your blood sugar and can still be a factor for diabetes. I pretty much swapped soda for beer and wine. There are much more actual nutrients in them. And I'm the healthiest I've been in my adult life currently, but thats probably not much to do with my beverage choice I am sure.

Nice I enjoy several Aussie wines, and probably my go-to first choice for inexpensive wine is an Aussie actually.
Hmmm alcohol. I haven't read any of the replies to this thread yet, so forgive me if I'm repeating something.
I love alcohol. Not all kinds of alcohol, though. When I was younger I was all for the vodka and shots of absinthe and stuff, but nowadays I enjoy a nice cold beer, or a sweet sangria. My favourite drink though, is tequila. I enjoy the flavour of these drinks, but it's also fun when you're drinking with friends and you get that buzz. Of course I won't lie, I've been wasted a lot of times - in fact, I've been drunk and high from Wednesday to yesterday lol - but ultimately it's all about the company. Enjoying a cold beer with your friends is the best feeling you can have.

People will naturally like soda, especially children. No one has died of soda poisoning or soda driving. There really isn't a comparison, since any harm coming from soda is a long term issue that isn't solely caused by soda. I've swapped soda with water.
