Anime is simply not as popular as it used to be. People used to sign up in droves to discuss anime on forums. Some of the big sites from back in the day have gone or gone inactive, sadly. I am sure that there are a lot of older members who have mostly grown out of anime, yet hang around for the misc sections due to nostalgia. I do think Misc can be too spammy to have any kind of semi serious discussion though. Not talking debates, just less stupid replies and more discussion. That's what compels me to post. If I see stupid, I won't bother.

I still watch anime, but I am choosey about what I watch.

That's you. Not everyone is the same. A lot of people grow out of watching anime. I know this first hand from being around anime forum sites for more than 10 years and making a hell of a lot of friends. People grow up, get jobs, get married, have children etc. Their time is not their own anymore and anime takes a back seat. Some people choose to find time to watch some now and again. Most, just can't be bothered. They find other things that they enjoy. It's life.
