The problem is her performance in question DID "objectify" her. It made her into a SEX OBJECT. That is degrading to herself.

Even though her performance did send out a message that women are little more than sex toys, it is ultimately society (or some section of which) that carved that notion in stone, not necessarily MC herself. There's no question that her performance was sexually provocative; however age-appropriate people who found it offensive in some way were also free to ignore it; and had most done that instead of posting resentful comments, they'd be little material from which MC could have derived a personal sense of degradation in the first place.

And if her performance in question did objectify her, or even degrade herself in some way, how is that a problem and who is it affecting? I don't see her personally-inflicted reduction of herself to a sexual object as a problem, because in the first place I did not expect, nor did I oblige MC to be some kind of "role model" for kids. It'd be an entirely different story if she posed as Hanna Montana and did the exact same thing, then kids and adults would have every right to complain, but I don't see that as the case here.

Anyways, the point I was making is that when you imply that a celebrity should be tied to some career choice for the sake of upholding some conceptual ideal, responsibility or duty obliged by society, that is objectification nonetheless; it's still reducing the celebrity to a thing that can be owned, dictated, and possessed as if they are a piece of public property--which they are not; the "thing" does not have to be sex-related in order to fall under the definition of objectification. She may be objectifying herself anyway, but even so, that doesn't automatically give other people the right to objectify her as well. She has a right to objectify herself because her body is her own property; but it is not ours.

this "controversy" (lol) makes me very glad that i don't follow through news or any other media the lives of child stars. people that have never given a flippin' fack about miley cyrus are now condemning her as if they have every right to. they don't. it somehow seems unlikely that the people who are condemning her have been in her shoes: a millionaire 20yo pop star. you can't say with any inkling of credibility "oh, if i were a millionaire 20 year old disney pop star, I wouldn't have done that". seeing as how you are not and never will be what miley cyrus is, you don't know that. i didn't watch the show she's getting flak for, but my understand of it is THAT IT'S JUST UNNACCEPTABLE.

Uh as far as I was aware, 'little more' defines something that for all intents and purposes has little difference to what it is being compared to. Hence the inclusion of 'little' to denote that the differences between both are marginal at best. Since this video thing (which I have not seen) seemed to be denoting her as being some sort of sex toy, the use of 'little more' to describe her seems to be most appropriate.

Besides, it logically makes more sense than your suggestion of 'as well'.

My morals are not dependant on that of society; therefore I don't really have this "issue". If "it" does affect you, it's because you simply allowed it to get under your skin at the end of the day. And just because others may not be making as much a song and dance about "it" as you, that doesn't mean they have become desensitised the whatever they're supposed to be shocked at.

There's a difference between having morals and moralising; and the latter is what you're doing. A moral person has values that they apply only to themselves; a moraliser is a person who seeks to impose their values on others, because it makes the world safe and pleasant for their insecure and uneducated mind. As one philosopher put it: "We moralise to suit ourselves; not necessarily to make improve society". The Bible; the media; Politicians; they're the things that have done real damage to morality and society if you ask me. That's why I can't really be all that shocked at that video; it's not that I've become desensitised, it's that I have a sense of perspective. You should try it sometime.

If you don't think what Miley did here was wrong, what about what Chloe Moretz said in the movie Kick-A$$? She was only 11 at the time of the filming, but she used quite a few bad words including f**k and c**t, words that would get the movie an R rating (even if nothing else R rated happened in the film), so even she couldn't attend her own movie unless she was accompanied by her parents or guardian. If it's too nasty for a kid to listen too, it should CERTAINLY be too nasty for a kid to say. But there you have it, she was only 11 at the time, and despite her age they had her say those words for the movie. Something doesn't seem quite right about that.
