Most expensive [or crazy] food/meal you've ever had?

Whether it was a single dish, item you bought at a store, a full meal out somewhere, etc, let's hear some stories of crazy food pricing and experiences.

1. During a stay at a hotel/resort for a school event in Reno, spent about 30 bucks on a salmon plate. Totally wasn't my idea/my first time eating in a place where I felt totally out of place.

2. At a Japanese restaurant with our anime club, me and the prez spent about 100 bucks together on various food, and we were STILL hungry.

3. My birthday this year, friend went to a Jack in the Box and asked what was the most tacos anyone ever ordered at once. He came back with 64 tacos to share between about eight people. BEST birthday/drunk meal EVER.

That I actually paid for was probably when I bought some Kobe Beef Filet Mignons at a market for my mom and I that I cooked for dinner.

My dad's paid for high end steak for me before because he was a big beef person.

When I was in Korea my friend's friend took out a couple 100,000 ($100 USD) won bills/checks for the 3 of us for out Doggy soup meal. (yeah, i said it...dog).... So that was probably the "craziest" depending on where you live.

I used to work at a Japanese Restaurant so I never really try to spend much on Sushi unless I know it's going to be really good and fresh.


I do work in the Food Service Industry so there are things that I've eaten at work that would be expensive if I actually had to pay for them.

My parents have never really been much of fans of going out/eating expensive food what with living in the boonies and being lower-middle class, and similarly I don't see the point in going out myself and splurging. These days the most expensive things I tend to eat are Dominos pizzas.

As for my own experiences, I haven't really been anywhere extravagant. I've been a few times with my family to a Tandoori restaurant and we usually end up spending £20-30 each on individual meals (I usually got the mixed grill platter, expensive as heck but so worth it).

Aside from that the last restaurant I went to was a TGI-Friday's in Sheffield last year, for my friends' birthday. Between me and my friend the bill came to £50 and long-story-short we basically ended up buying a cheeseburger, some fries and two pints of beer each ... yeah. £25 for a cheeseburger and fries.

But it was the best damn cheeseburger I've ever had and the place served goddamn beer, so I'm not really complaining. For a birthday day out with a friend it was a good meal. Expensive for what it was, but worth it.


Yeah, I know. I'm boring. The third most expensive place I've been to to get food is called 'Anywhere in London', but I think that's a given.

Probably abalone, man, and that was from cans. $40+ for a can. It was pretty good though!

most expensive meal i've ever eaten was filet mignon at a steak place. $40 for a small cut of beef(wrapped in bacon) but it was amazing.

I dunno to be honest I think the most expensive meal out was at Ibiza and 1 drink for 4 people alone came to about £45.

I took my girlfriend to a restaurant before we saw Whitesnake in concert. She had steak & veggies and a couple glasses of wine. Myself; Crispy half chicken & goat cheese mashed potatos and a couple glasses of scotch. In total for the both of us I paid around $110 before tip.

Same here, but hey, stuff happens.
I could live off of tacos that go for 99 cents a pop, and I freaked the other day when my friend ended up paying 30 USD for four tacos. Then again, when John Travolta, Toby Kieth and other celebs eat there, you KNOW the place is gonna charge out the butt for food.

In Australia you'd practically be forgiven for eating roadkill since it still counts as meat. I've had kangaroo steaks which can be really expensive, like around $25. It's pretty much just expensive beef but it's a hell of a lot harder to cook. Unless you cook it exactly right it's like eating a shoe. I've had rabbit, or as it is better known 'poor man's chicken' which is a little bit stringy but when it tastes like chicken, all is forgiven. Then there is crocodile meat which is fairly tough but really nice. I also bought emu jerky at an airport once and like anything from an airport it was ridiculously overpriced at $12 for a relatively small packet. It wasn't that good I must say, beef jerky is better and cheaper. I tried snake meat when I was in primary school and it was good but for the amount of meat you get it's not really worth it.

So yeah...Obscure meats are quite popular down here.

I've been to Ruth Chris twice in 10 years, and the last time I remember, it was:

$40 a NY strip
$20 for a salad

It's the best steak I've ever had (both times) and the best salad I've ever had (the most recent visit).

For me it was dinner at The Capital Grille. Total came out to $300 for just 2 people, and we didn't even order that much. It's more the experience and ambiance that you pay for, not really the food...

It was the kind of place where you had to wear a suit and book a reservation a month ahead of time to even get in. I had lobster that cost $85 and she had a steak for $50. Including drinks, appetizers, and deserts, the total bill was about $200. Needless to say



the only nights i can think of spending more on things to ingest are night where i start buying rounds at the bar. largest bill i've racked up so far was $580. I'm not looking to ever top it.

The most expensive and memorable meal I had was a buffet dinner at the Sydney Tower Restaurant during my vacation last year. The view was magnificent and the food was delicious. It was my first time eating kangaroo meat and emus.

I hate hate hate overpriced food. About 2 years back at my old work, I thought the company was paying when the team went out for lunch - turns out it was each pays their way. Should've ordered something cheaper!

I decided to make Dan cultured by eating some of the stuff that we use to eat growing up. So I made him some Kheer, Spinach Pakora,
Ox tails, curry and Berber bread. It was also very expensive because I had to go to a specialty store a bit out of town because there is no diversity in my town in Tennessee, so I had to go all the way to Chattanooga to get some of the ingredients.
Well, the other people liked it and all but ofcourse Dan, the one I cooked it for hated it!
