    Default A Few Questions

    1) Has anyone seen Oreimo? I noticed Saori has a slang when she talks. Instead of using normal honorifics "chan" or "kun", she uses "shi", like "Kiririn-shi". What does this honorific mean?

    2) Saori also uses "de gozaru" behind her sentences. Is it a polite way, rude way, cool way or something to end a sentence? And if there are some more things to explain about Saori's slang, please do.

    3) Does Hinata from Mirai Nikki uses Kanto slang? And "uchi" means "I", what slang is it? Is it a polite version? And what slang is it if "ya" is added to the back of the sentence (like how "zo", "ze", and "yo" is added to the end of the sentence)

    Thanks!
    May peace bestow this world,
    May our hearts unite.
Life may not be smooth as pearl,
But pray for our decisions to be always right.

Life may be hard, it's a big pain in the butt. But hey, who says behind all those pain, can't hide some happiness ?

I think I read somewhere that shi is an honorific for doctors and authorsm, but that could be wrong. An old dictionary just says it means Mr. Shi can also be used for emphasis after verbs and adjectives and Kirino uses it this way.

De gozaru is a polite form of the verb desu and can be used to raise the status of the person being talked about (such as a superior at work) or it can refer to the speaker in a humble way, such as when talking to people the speaker is not close to. I'm not sure how Saori is using it.

I have heard of ya being used after nouns to say a list is not exhaustive (basically as etc.).

-shi is actually the word for "Mr." It's a formal ending used with family names (last names) for males.

"de gozaru" is a very formal, and classical way of saying "desu". Its modern equivalent is "de gozaimasu". The speech pattern, I believe, was made famous by Himura Kenshin in Rurouni Kenshin and it doesn't translate very well at all out of Japanese.

I haven't seen the show, but it sounds like Hinata is using Kansai-ben, or something close (like Oosaka-ben, or something from western Japan). As you mention, "uchi" is used for "I". "Ya" at the end is roughly equivalent to "da" or "desu" in Kantou-ben (eastern Japan's dialect, which includes Tokyou-ben). Other commonly seen terms in Kansai-ben are "Ooki ni" for "Thank you", and "Akan de" for "Ikenai n da" ("Don't do...")

    Hope that helps.

    My 2 yen,

    Akiosama
