    Default Toonami Discussion

So...I didn't see any threads for discussion on the Adult Swim block Toonami that airs on Saturday nights, so I thought it'd be nice to discuss. I felt it fit here since it airs mostly anime. So, what do you guys think of it and what its currently airing? Any ways you think it could improve? What shows do you wish it aired?
For those who don't know, its currently airing Bleach, Naruto, Soul Eater, IGPX, Thundercats (Not anime), Sym-Bionic Titan (Not anime), Eureka Seven, Tenchi Muyo GXP, Cowboy Bebop, and Inuyasha. It's also going to start airing One Piece soon.

Interestingly enough, the current robot that hosts Toonami, TOM 3.5, is being replaced starting this weekend with a new TOM 5.0 and TOM's got a new ship.

It also airs Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood.

I will watch it occasionally to get a taste of different shows but from what Ive seen Im not much of a fan of the shows aired. Thundercats and Symbionic Crap really annoy me. Thats an hour wasted.

Also for me I think its hard to jump into the middle of a series and become interested enough to follow it on a weekly basis and watch Toonami. I usually like to cram episodes and will watch a 26 episode series in a few days. Once a week is too in frequent for me.

Good thread by the way. Ill be interested to read other's opinions.

Toonami in 2013 is crap. I mean, look at the shows. Bleach is okay, but really the rest is not very good, minus Bebop. Though, glad its still around.

Ah, I had forgotten about FMA: Brotherhood. It's probably because I finished the series on TV. xD I pay careful attention to what airs on TV when, so I try hard to start watching from episode 1 and keep up with series. It helps that I use DVR, so I'm able to watch entire series on Toonami and marathon episodes, since I'll likely have quite a few episodes recorded by the time I watch them. I can understand though. The once a week thing is so bad that shows like Bleach, Naruto, and One Piece take forever to air all the way through. Regarding Thundercats and Sym-Bionic Titan; While Thundercats seemed rather dull to me, I was rather surprised to find that Sym-Bionic Titan has smooth animation, can get very violent and even a little bloody, has fanservice, shows on screen death, and has an interesting storyline (that is unfortunately never finished). I'm actually very pleased with it.

Bleach and Bebop are the only shows on the block I don't like, besides Thundercats. ._. Bleach is great off its filler, but with it seems to drag onlong. Bebop I didn't care for, and it doesn't help that the series has been rerunning for years. Personally, I'm loving Soul Eater and Inuyasha. But that's fine. I understand some people may not be happy with the lineup. I wish there wasn't so much longrunning shonen on the block, and even worse, that when One Piece starts airing it'll start in the early 200s rather than from episode 1.

It might be worth noting that Toonami occasionally airs movies, and has so far aired Evangelion 1.11. Also, past shows that have aired all the way through on Toonami since its return in 2012 are Deadman Wonderland, Casshern Sins, and Samurai Seven. Tenchi Muyo GXP is close to finishing its run.

Interesting. Bebop is pretty good, though on rare occasions people seem to diss it. Naruto has even ripped off Bebop numerous times via the fight scenes, which is sorta annoying, but is whatever.

    Deadman was good though!

Ya i like Bebop but I do understand being a little tired of it since it has prob aired many times being older and one of the more popular shows.

I just feel like Toonami could have come harder and brought some more heavy hitters. Honestly I think Sailor Moon would be a good show to put on this block. Give the girls something to watch and maybe youll get that female demo to watch some of the other shows as well. Sailor Moon was on a lot of the original line ups but hasnt been on for years now.

Samurai Champloo is another show that would be a perfect fit for this line up. Also it has never aired on Toonami. So you could expose an entire new audience to a great show that is very easy to enjoy and follow.

Sailor Moon would be great timing, as it would really pimp out the new series coming this year.

If Sailor Moon was redubbed, I'd have to agree. But it is Adult Swim. Isn't Sailor Moon too kiddy for Adult Swim, at least with original dub? Uncensored maybe, but otherwise? Still, I do believe I read that the Toonami crew was curious about the new Sailor Moon coming. Could be good news. Plus a Sailor Moon series may finally get a proper dub.

Hah, I'd disagree, but it is the most memorable and most related anime to Toonami.

Its a tad kiddy, but is still pretty decent. Airing it may cause older fans to watch it, meaning a possible small ratings boost.

Watched the IGPX premiere on April 27. Much better than I thought it'd be. IGPX actually had two versions, a Toonami version, and another one, not actually meaning censorship strangely, and they aired the Toonami version. Twas' a pretty good first episode. The CGI and the racing turned me off of it, but the characters are so cool that the show stayed interesting. Also interesting that IGPX was a Toonami and Production IG coproduction.
Also, the new Toonami changed look from this:

Tenchi Muyo GXP has finished airing and replacing it is One Piece, which will start airing on Saturday from about episode 214 (I'm not entirely sure on the episode number)

Did someone dub that anime? Or is it just going to be the sub? Either way I have no interest. The first three episodes were good, then it became average, then it became dull with forced romance and I just stopped watching. But enough SAO hate from me.

At first I thought D.Gray-man would be nice to see on Toonami BUT the whole series wasn't dubbed and I don't really like the idea of that series becoming mainstream, since, well, it's my favorite anime. I couldn't really think of another show I'd like to see on there. Maybe Claymore? But that's a real stretch.

As for the current line up. I enjoy watching Bleach, Soul Eater, and Cowboy Bebop.... and I kinda like Thundercats.... which is weird. I can't make myself stay up long enough to watch Bebop so I record it and watch it later

Yep. Either Sword Art Online has been dubbed, or is being dubbed.
As for what I like on Toonami....Soul Eater, Eureka 7, One Piece, and Inuyasha.

What I want to see on it? Gurren Lagann, Puella Magi Madoka Magica, and Tenchi Muyo: War on Geminar.

    I love nuToonami.

As much as I love symbionic titan they need to replace it with megas XLR or something.

I wish they didn't have to pander to the "anime audience" so hard though. Also, as far as gurren lagan making it onto the block. Scify channel is holding the rights to the show with a deathgrip.

SOA: Bad show, but they had to pick it up. The guys who brought back Toonami are trying to score brownie points with funimation, and that was one of the shows funimation wanted to see aired. All in all, it's been a good one year return for Toonami. It's lasted a lot longer then initially expected. Thankfully Synder won't be able to cancel it again.

"Samurai Champloo is another show that would be a perfect fit for this line up. Also it has never aired on Toonami. So you could expose an entire new audience to a great show that is very easy to enjoy and follow." Sadly, They can't afford to buy the show. Toonami started out with almost no budget, the only budget they had were the shows the got when they first started. We'll probably see it on one day, considering Toonami loves Hip-Hop, and Samurai Champloo was Hip-Hop meets Edo period japan.

I'm just happy Steven Blum was bro enough to return as the voice of Tom despite being a bit underpaid for the role. Unlike that hack who used to voice Sara.

I'm very glad they brought Toonami back; and all of the shows on it are at least okay. Not like there's anything better to watch on tv after midnight on a Saturday anyway. I'm actually really glad they brought back the IGPX series. I saw there was some confusion regarding the series, so let me clarify: the original IGPX was series of 6 mini-episodes that aired on the original Toonami block during Giant Robot Week in 2003. It caught some hype, and a few years later Cartoon Network/Toonami went back to work on it with Production IG (probably best known State-side for the Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex series) to produced the full 26-episode series in 2006. It aired on Toonami, and I believe later on Adult Swim while the original Toonami was still on the air.

I'm also glad they're giving FUNi's One Piece dub a real shot; One Piece could have been as huge here as it is in Japan, but 4kids ruined most people's first impression of it. Bleach and Inuyasha are still the late-night mainstays...I loved the two year period when they finally stopped showing Inuyasha re-runs every night after nearly a decade.

Also, while Samurai Champloo never aired on "Toonami", it did run on Adult Swim. A lot. Most people who watched anime prior to 2010 are aware of it. But, yeah, it would be good for them to show again.
