    Default Dubbed OR Subbed?

Hey AF. You know, how animes have an original japanese voice acting and then it gets licensed for a dub release? Well, do you prefer an anime dubbed or subbed? Really, its all opinion, but IMO it depends on the anime. Shows like Dream Eater Merry are painful in sub format.

It depends i guess... old animes that were introduced to me when i was young like Dragon Ball and Full Metal Alchemist etc i prefer dubbed because the voice acting was good... nowadays i only do subbed, because the animation was meant for those syllables spoken. Dubs nowadays seems too forced.

Dubs sees to work well with some animes like Angel Beats!, Haruhi, and some of the older animes. I really don't liked subbed because some of the grammar doesn't make sense to me.

Subbed of course. By watching subbed anime we experience 2 different language, Japanese and English (well not always English it could be other language). That way we can learn Japanese easier I think.

Also if we take away the original Japanese voice then some of the culture references might be lost in translation.

    That's what I think though.

depends on the show. FMA Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo were pretty good dubs IMO. Neon Genesis Evangelion was stupid bad when dubbed but subs make it my personal favorite. Elfen Lied, Deadman Wonderland, Ghost in the Shell, Akira were all fine subs but i didnt even try the dub.

I prefer the subs in most cases because I find the emotions come off more truly and i prefer the females voices in japanese over english in most cases. Rei's voice in english just sounded like a monotone zombie but in japanese she sounded like she had purpose and dignity. Also you hear the -san -kun -chan and -sama and it makes more sense in the dubs than hearing sir or miss a hundred times

It really depends on the anime. Like others have said anime like FMA, Cowboy Bebop and Trigun had good dubs to them, but some anime like Hajime no Ippo are better being subbed rather than dubbed. I've watch Hajime no Ippo dubbed, but I just get a lot more feeling from the characters watching it subbed.

yeah, i have to go with the consensus here, it's preferable subbed, but some dubs are so good its more comfortable to watch in your own language sometimes. Like paranoia agent, quality dub, quality anime

I prefer English subs with original Japanese voices but Imo not all dubs are bad. I generally like the Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood dub from what I've heard. Funimation are generally good with dubbing so go to them if you want to find something with a decent dub. I personally like Soul Eater and the Persona series when it comes to dubbing. They all sound like they fit extremely well together, especially Black Star, Death the Kid, and Mitsuru Kirijo.

Another problem with dubbing is that it's usually done by a company for a larger audiences. So they usually contains censored things so it can fit in the American market.

I haven't actually watched much dubbed but the main one was Angel Beats. When compared to the subs (from what I saw) they swore MORE in the dub than the subs, along with the jokes being funnier.

Though with Angel Beats aside, I'd rather watch anything in sub over dub, generally I don't like the English VAs chosen.

I like subs better since the anime is made to fit with the original voice actors. Also, voice acting is a lot more serious in Japan than in the west, so voice actors put more effort into acting, even if they play a minor character.
However, the dub for Black Lagoon is infinitely better than the sub.

Dubbed, provided it's done by people who know what they're doing.

    Example:

Anime is a lot like sex. Done right it's a beautiful act of creation that brings a little more light into the world. If it's sick and wrong... it's even better.

Subbed. Original voices, the right emotions, and the right words to actually fit the scene.

Dubs can be good in very rare occaisions, but I know that they can be good.

However- for the majority of English dubbed anime my opinion is it's almost like the dubbing companies literally walked out into a street in the midwest and just pulled some random dipweeds off them-with no voice training whatsoever handed them the script and said: "Hey! We need voice actors! Read this and we'll pay you for it! Who cares if you can't act!"

I like to watch the Japanese sub with the original voice but there is normally that one anime I come across that I like the English dub more.

Well, I'd prefer subbed more than dubbed. I've never watched dubbed because I want all my anime experiences to be in original Japanese audio. But that doesn't mean the dubbed version sucks. Sometimes it gives out a very American-style of anime and it's not that bad at all. However, some subbed versions are also lacking in some way. Like in Higurashi When They Cry, the seiyuu of the main character (Japanese version) really ruined many main scenes. But in contrast with that, the other seiyuus in that anime did a great job to bring out the mood of the show. Especially Yukino Satsuki, her famous role is Kagome Higurashi from Inuyasha, who is very soft and kind. It's a complete contrast to the character she plays in When They Cry. That's why, it depends on each seiyuu.
    May peace bestow this world,
    May our hearts unite.
Life may not be smooth as pearl,
But pray for our decisions to be always right.

Life may be hard, it's a big pain in the butt. But hey, who says behind all those pain, can't hide some happiness ?

For me, as for a lot of others, it depends on the anime, where the setting is, and who did the dub(if it's available).

Depending on the plot, I'll watch the dub. A good example is of course Cowboy Bebob and Trigun. In both of these, they have 'western' themes and when I think of the west, I think of America. So, it's only natural I'd want to watch it dubbed. However, as a few people mentioned already, Japanese cultural references are lost when made into a dub taking from the overall depth.

The setting also has a big part in it. I already somewhat mentioned this in my last paragraph, but if an anime takes place in England such as Hellsing or Black Butler, then I am definitely going to watch it dubbed. Seeing English people speak Japanese just isn't right. xD

Then finally I have to see who made the dub. Funimation, for the most part, have excellent voice actors who I believe do a pretty good job. I won't usually watch a dub done by any others because more often than not, they're not good.

So that's my two cents. xD

Subbed. Whenever I watch something in a foreign language, it's always in it's original language with English subbed

Well for most Anime subbed would be the best althought there are a few good dubbed anime such as Mushi-Shi, DBZ, FMA, to name a few. But I have been thinking that when we watch an anime and we listen to in dub form first then we watch it in subbed form we already have a set expectation of what the character's voice should sound like. So if are used to the subbed voice we may hear the dubbed voice and dislike it because it is different from what we were expecting.

I watch a mix of subbed and dubbed, I don't really have a preference. While I think hearing the original Japanese voices definitely adds to the show, I also like the dubbed versions. For example, I prefer Death Note and FMA subbed, and Naruto and Soul Eater dubbed, and I've watched a mix of both with Hetalia, because the dubbed had funny English phrases that weren't in the original :3

I prefer subbed over dubbed! The voices in subbed are better even if I don't understand any of it!
