What is this anime monster?

I remember watching a cartoon- anime series quite a long time ago in which there is a giant monster. The monster has multiple forms or there are multiple monsters of the same family I'm not too sure, but the two forms that I remember is a fish or whale and a bat. The monster looks like it's made of rock and there are patterns carved on it's skin. If i'm not wrong, there's a group of people who tries to revive or control the monster and the protagonists try to stop them. Eventually the group of people shot the bat monster with some kind of beam and it's rock skin fell off, it's deformed, explode and die...??? Does anyone know the name of the monster(s) and the series, please tell me. Thanks.
