Default Do we have any runners here?

So running is one of my favorite activities, figured I'd make a thread for us runners. Curious if there are many more, I know I've talked to a couple here... @PinkGalaxies and @Thefringedninja
Whether your a recreational runner or marathoner tell us a little. Any upcoming races or goals you have?

I ran a couple years of crosscountry in high school and really liked it. Considering I didnt start until 11th grade I did pretty decent, but wasnt in the top 3 ever. After college and getting married and life being really busy I kind of got out of it, and got out of shape. It took a while but eventually my health even suffered. When I hit 50# over the weight I was in college I decided to make some changes. That was about 3 years ago, a few big things were happening in my life... and I started getting back into the things I used to love like hiking, biking, running, etc. and really turned myself around. Started eating healthier too which was my biggest problem. I had lost a lot of ground since HS, but I have run in many 5k's and 10k's in the last 3 years, and just last year completed my first half-marathon.

This is my second year to ever run through the winter, and I did a 5k race on New Years Day. It was cold and I had some cramping in my feet half way though, but still managed to pull off a 23:42. The race was benefiting the The Luke Billings Foundation for the treatment of children with Cerebral Palsy. It was my first winter race ever, so I was happy just to partake. Speaking of which, I am signed up for a 5k this Sunday at the Arnold Sports Festival. Its going to be the coldest temps I have ran in period, possibly in the teens(F). I plan on just taking it easy.

Some goals I have for this year will be to run my first full marathon (fall) and break a 20 minute 5k which I havent done since my teens.

    I do. Recreation or non-competitive.
I run about 30 minutes several days a week on a trail.

I've always had a big dog to motivate me to run more often, but atm I have a teacup Maltese -.- my dog running full speed is the same as me walking quickly.
But I do like running on soft sand, good cardio and calf workout.

My old mile time was 7 minutes.
    Now it's probably about 16.

I really gotta start running again....

I run for an hour everyday for sure, an hour and 30 minutes every Tuesday and Thursday, but my stamina isn't so great on account of my asthma so I switch from running to jogging often, sometimes I end up speed walking because my asthma gets really bad.

I'm not sure where your located but at my latitude half the year the sun is at too low of an angle to stimulate vitamin production, I've heard the rule of thumb is if your shadow is longer than you are, then not enough UV is going to be hitting you. But honestly most of the time spring to fall I'm outside working without a shirt so running in the sun is just a small percentage of my exposure. I enjoy night running as well, and used to do it often. All the parks and trails close at sundown though unfortunately, so all I am left locally is narrow country roads with 55mph limits. To survive in those conditions I go out looking like a christmas tree with reflective gear, headlamp and red strobe tailight!

Thats pretty good... I can't really find the time everyday to run, I shoot for 3 days a week personally. But that does limit me, its been hard once I get up to 25-30 miles a week. I'm trying to introduce a few back to back days here and there, but generally stick to every other day.

Well I completed the Arnold 5k today in 22:38 (75th out of 555). It ended up being a bit warmer than previously forecasted, mid-twenties (F), so maybe not my absolute coldest run period, but so far my coldest race. I was fortunate to work two block away so I could park for free in my works garage, warmup in the lower level of the garage (a little warmer and no wind) and have decent bathrooms a floor above me. My official time was a little slower, but apparently they only chip times the finish, and everyone started with the siren so it took me 20-some seconds to actually get to the start line.

I havent signed up for it yet but I think my next race will be a 10k on St Patricks day, my running partner and one of her friends have already signed up for it, so think I'll do it.

I'm a recreational runner. When I have to go somewhere, I often ride a bike or I put on a pair of shorts and a tank top and start running. I used to drive my car across town but after gasoline cost $3.00+ a gallon,I spent most of my time running or jogging.
I can only post one day a week. ...Phooey.

I've started running more and more lately. I practice martial arts and whenever I spar with someone I'm never able to make it past 4 rounds. I've been doing a workout plan that includes quite a bit of running in it. The workout is starting to pay of because I've started to notice that while its hard to make it to rounds 5 or 6 , I can make it through 4 straight rounds without even getting tired. Also it does help to run more because it does help me when it comes to bboying.

I've been asked to do cross country when I was back in high school, but I was a little more focused on arts, really. And I don't think myself as really a good runner because somehow I get injuries on my feet often. So it's really something I avoid doing.
I think I've been considered as a "good runner" when I run away from my mom who tried to hit me with a bamboo stick. Ran out the door and everything!

Thats one nice thing about being in town, being able to bike to places. In my case especially - my truck usually only gets 10-15 mpg. I moved outside the city a few years ago, and love it here, but its a long way to anywhere. I'm 40 miles from where I work. There is a small ton 5-10 miles away but there really isnt much there to bike to. I'd still like to bike from place to place just for fun on weekends and looking for a nice roadbike but man they are pricey!

And its official, signed up for 10k next weekend...

First race I'll ever have done where they give ya free beer at the finish, wohoo!

I think I've been considered as a "good runner" when I run away from my mom who tried to hit me with a bamboo stick. Ran out the door and everything!
While I hope the bamboo whacking wasn't a frequent occurrence! Ouch! I hurt my feet and legs too running, in fact leg and foot injuries are pretty common now-a-days despite how fancy and technological footwear has become lately. Actually many think thats the problem, have you ever thought about barefoot running? I actually switched to barefoot almost two years ago. It was a very slow process to acclimate my always-shod feet and build their strength back up but its amazing now and I havent had the problems I used to. It actually makes running fun again, and I love running through puddles now, and not having to spend so much money on shoes they say will wear out in 200 miles! We were 'born to run'!!!

Just an update, the Shamrock Run 10k was a big hit! I and two of my friends ran it. Not a lot of runners though, I think most people were too busy at the pubs! I ran it in my Vibram Five Fingers (too cold for barefoot) in 46:43 for 13th place overall. Got a commemorative beer glass, that I can use! And of course we celebrated afterward with some well deserved ales.

Also last weekend my friend and I ran another 10k, this one was even smaller, only about 100 people, since it offered two other distances and most were in the 5k or 1/2 marathon. I got 3rd overall with a 43:44 time. My friend also won her age group.
    Pic of us afterwards:

Next on the radar is the Capital City Half Marathon in two weeks. This will be my big race for the first half of 2013, what I have been training for. Only done a 1/2 once before. They are estimating 16,000 runners. This race will support the American Cancer Society and a few other charities.

Yeah, I like running. I prefer sprinting short distances, (50 yards in 7.8 seconds in 5th grade :3) but I also can run some decently long distances. Next week I'm doing a 2 mile race for youths in a park near my house.

I am a casual runner and I am not sure if I want to run a marathon in the future. it's early days yet.
I mostly run for only an hour a day and only on concrete because we do not have great trails where I live.
What do you guys bring on your runs?

Hi WhyWorry, glad to hear of another runner. A marathon is a long way - I wouldnt worry about that unless you get into racing (have you done any 5ks or 10ks, etc?). But it is a nice goal to have out there, for someday. I'm training towards that all summer, but a bit worried I wont be up to the distance in time. I actually have a half-marathon this weekend, it will be my third one, and hopefully my fastest. I am getting more and more into racing and being competitive, and training hard to go faster and longer and just love it.

I usually run on asphalt roads or rail trails too, but on occasion go into dirt trails. As far as what I bring with me... I actually go out with a lot of gear compared to most. Some like bringing nothing and just enjoying the run and nature. I like that too, but I still gear up. I have a GPS watch that tracks all my stats, a Nathan HPL #020 race vest that has a 2 liter water bladder, and has some pockets of stuff like my cell phone, wallet, and body glide. I usually listen to tunes on all my longer runs. Night runs I have headlamp & tailight, reflective vest and ankle straps. Around here all the roads are narrow country roads 55mph with no shoulders (most not even painted lines) so if you value your life at night you better be lit up like a christmas tree! If there is any chance of rain I also bring zip lock baggie to stash my phone in, and a visor to keep the rain off my face (especially my glasses).

I used to run, two years ago. When I went to university, it became harder for me to fit running in my schedule, I became too lazy, and now here I am. I really wish I'd start running again, though.

Well don't ever give up! But I fell in that trap too, many do. I even tried to run a little now and then in my 20's, some years I might run a dozen or two times in the summer, other years not at all. You need to find some motivation, maybe get to be friends with some runners. I wish I could give ya some better advice, motivation was my big issue too. I basically just gave up at some point, and didnt care about running, or what kind of physical shape I was in. I think it took until a doctor told me I needed to start making some changes that I woke up. Whatever it was, it was like a switch flipped and I've been really self motivated ever since.

Yes, I know what you mean. I guess I could be motivated, but then I start thinking about 'what about after September? When will you run?' Basically, I'll have classes every day from 6 30 pm to 10 30 pm, and work a part-time during the day. I don't have a part-time yet, but I'll try to get it in the morning, so I'll have time to study in the afternoon. I mean, when would I have the time to run, then?

Wow, Tristan. That is a lot of gear. When you run, do you wear your glasses or do you wear contacts? I don't like contacts as I find them fiddly. I just wear my normal glasses.
