America is better in comparison. At any rate, it's not really fair to compare countries by what some random artist anthropomorphized them as.

The entire picture is the personification of culture ignorance.

Moreover, not even a fair comparison, since the picture is comparing an entire continent to a relatively small country. Strictly speaking, "America" does not merely cover the United States (as the left half of the picture seems to be suggesting), but also Canada, Brazil and all the central and southern American countries put together, all of which have distinct cultures. Even with the correct terminology applied (United States vs. Japan) it's not a fair comparison. The notion of comparing 2 (or more) politically defined boundaries is ridiculous to begin with; for such a comparison has no bearing on cultural differences whatsoever, especially when the former (presumably the United States) is more multicultural than the latter (Japan).

What? I don't get it. How does country size or continent relate to the picture?

I don't see any obvious competition between the two ladies in the pictures either ...

Given that there's no title (if any) cited with the picture and a lack of explanation, I can only go by visual impression and the title of the thread. But I think most would agree that it's a comparison between the culture of people from the United States and that of people from Japan--and very generalised, stereotypical one at that.

However, the title of the thread is implying that an entire continent is being compared to a country, even though it's fairly obvious that the left half of the picture is mainly referring to the stereotyped general culture of the United States. So to answer your question: if we respect the title of the thread, then "American culture" is being compared to "Japanese culture", and then we have an unfair comparision because then it's actually a comparison between several countries and one country; i.e. a large multicultural group inhabiting a large area of land to a mostly monocultural group inhabiting a relatively small area of land. While the latter could potentially have as many cultures as the former, history has shown that multiple cultures packed into small regions of land can give rise to cultural rifts and ethnic tensions, so it is rarely a reality. The United Kingdom is perhaps one country that mangages to defy this rule however, and in relative terms, peoples of various ethnicity are able to co-exist in peace--but it's not perfect.

Even country to country comparisons are unfair, but that's somewhat more meaningful than the comparison implied by the title of this thread. Of course, it might just be a case of careless definition; but be that as it may, I don't see why I should waste time decoding loosely defined titles (thus, be forced to make unfounded assumptions), when they ought to be written properly in the first place.

I never said anything about competition. The content in the picture appears to be drawn at the expense of both countries, and comparision doesn't necessarily imply competition.

Lol. Not at all. I can't dislike the US because it's too varied in culture. However, if it's a choice between "Murka" and Japan, Japan is going to win me over hands down. =P

But hell, I'll even like that oily fat guy if I can get a ride on the back of his scooter.
