Default How massive was that meteor in Russia anyway?

Some reports have said 7000kg (this = 7 metric tons). But other have used metric tons instead of kg, and all the reports using metric tons instead of kg have reported 10000 metric tons. I don't know what's going on but there is a BIG DIFFERENCE between 7 and 10000!

Can someone tell me just what is going on here? And just how much did that thing actually weigh?

"initial estimated mass of 10,000 tonnes," http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2013_Russian_meteor_event

It seems an early estimate was 10 tons and then NASA later estimated it to be 10000 tons.

In earlier reports, Russian scientists estimated the asteroid weighed about 10 tons before it entered the Earth's atmosphere, and broke apart 30–50 km (20–30 miles) above ground.[31][32][33][34][35] The United States space agency NASA estimated the diameter of the bolide at about 17 m and its mass at about 10,000 tons.[2][36][37]
I don't know ... weighed 10 tons is pretty ambiguous. Maybe it weighed 10 tons prior to entering Earth's atmosphere due to reduced gravity?

    EDIT:
My guess is that someone made a typo.

---------- Post added at 08:05 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:50 PM ----------

    From NASA's own page

The estimated size of the object, prior to entering Earth's atmosphere, has been revised upward from 49 feet (15 meters) to 55 feet (17 meters), and its estimated mass has increased from 7,000 to 10,000 tons.
    I wager 10 tons is a typo.

Ahem, tonnes, not tons. ie: it's the Metric ton, not the SAE ton. Thus 2,204.6 pounds not 2,000 pounds. But yes, the estimates are of the object prior to atmospheric entry an I assume the "initial estimate" I quoted was an initial estimate from NASA. Though they do seem to be willy-nilly interchanging tonne with ton, so I'm not sure which they actually mean, but I assume tonne because Scientists rarely ever use a SAE measurement.

As for the weight, there is no weight in Space, only mass. Weight is pressure of gravity pushing down upon a mass. Therefore it wouldn't have any weight until it reached our gravitational forces. So everything is all based upon estimates from a few measurements prior to entry, beyond that point it starts losing mass due to friction and heat.

I think either Russian scientists wrote 10,000 kg by mistake (or made a mistake in the calculation), or a journalist (since wikipedia only cites news websites for the claim) misread 10,000 tons as 10,000 kg and shortened it.

I bet NASA and Russian scientists both really estimated the same thing.

I think it was only 10tonnes because that asteroid that flew by would have weighted about 10000tonnes. I think someones messing up some math somewhere with the meteor report by calling the meteor 10000tonnes.
