Default Are subliminal messages as prevalent conspiracy theorists say?

I often hear of stuff like this, and am left wondering how many claims are real, versus how many are just made paranoid nuts?

I don't know about the conspiracy part, but I imagine that advertisements would feature subliminal messages, and many of them are probably subliminal unintentionally. For example, you might see, out of the corner of your eye, a logo or a product picture on an envelope in your mail pile. You may not even be aware that you're seeing it. Or driving down the highway, you may not be actively paying attention to billboards, but you probably see their contents out of the corner of your eye. Maybe you remember these images without knowing it.

I think there's so much stuff with logos and product photos, that you probably see more advertisements than you realize. Even in your own home... But I seriously doubt there is any conspiracy at all.

There's rarely subliminal messaging because subliminal messaging simply isn't particularly effective. Ad-people, as well as the government, are fully aware of this.

I always hear the conspiracy theory that says the evil Big Brother dictatorship govt is using subliminal messages to control you.
I'm not sure whether to believe this (and become terrified), or just consider it bunk (and ignore it).

Humans are not easily controlled. Influenced, yes. Controlled, no.

Don't worry, most governments are to ineffective to even attempt such a thing.

Most conspiracies are bunkum. A few out there are real however (Bay of Tonkin, McGurks Bombing etc.). Keep an open mind when it comes to checking them out but be skeptical of the evidence displayed. Make sure the 'official story' the conspiracy theorists are attacking is actually the official story and not just badly constructed news reports from substandard news agencies. Tearing apart substandard reporting is not the same as proving a conspiracy true.
