I've heard good and bad experiences form people that have lived there primarily. They say that culture shock, next to the language barrier are hard to overcome, even if you think you love the Japanese culture or style- it's just different.
And never ever being truly accepted there is another thing as well. You will ALWAYS be Gaijen there, and just like anywhere else in the world can be discriminated because you are not Japanese. I would say this more from some of the older generations, that may be set in there ways, but I just thought i'd let you know it's nit big fluffy white clouds with pink unicorns on them farting rainbows out of their asses!
It could be a real reality check for a lot of you heading over, or plan on doing so!
I studied for Japanese for 3 years first time I came here 12 years ago and I did pretty good for my home stay. I say the thing that continues to shock me to this day is how Japan keeps on getting a new prime minister every year.

yes i want to go
@ParaParaJMo
12 years? Is Japan it for you? If I stayed there for that long, I'd stay forever. I've been in Japan before, I don't think I could stay longer than a year.
Well, I have live in Japan 3 times now. The first time was summer vacation of 2001. Second time was in 2006. For the third time, I have been here since 2009. But since 2009, I have lived in 5 cities and will be moving to a new place at the end of this month. I really like it here and enjoy my time here. After I am done up in Utsunomiya, I want to try living in Nagoya, Osaka, and Kyoto.

I would love to go to Japan. It would rock to know more about their culture and how things are like in the country.
I've also heard of this thing people call "engrish". It's a trend in Japan, but they have it all wrong and they don't even know what they're saying. XD
