Chemical weapons that actually kill require too much lab equipment for children to manufacture. Chances are they'll be dead from the manufacturing process long before they can deliver it. Other than that, you're left with a bunch of noxious gasses and irritants that sure, would have caused injuries, but wouldn't be nearly as effective as a gun.
The killer wasn't a child. He was in his twenties.
Ammonia and bleach is a very simple chemical combination to kill someone.
