The Recommendation Thread

Good day everyone. I am creating this thread because I know there are people who are probably board with what they are playing and want to try something new, but have no idea what to try. For some reason searching on this site is wonky on my computer so if this has been made before I apologize.

If you want to try something new but don't know where to start then post here with games you like and don't like and hopefully someone will reply with something you might like. Mentioning games you have already played will help immensly.

I will start as I actually was hoping to get some help.

I am looking for something new that is not Online only, and doesnt require an internet connection to play. I can get on the internet but it's not that great. I am currently deployed in Afghanistan, so that should explain more. I am looking for either an RTS, or RPG.

Games I have played that I like:
Starcraft II
Command & Conquer (Everything of theirs.)
Skyrim
Fallout New Vegas & 3
Borderlands 1&2
Saints Row the Third
Civilization 3 & 5
Doom 1&2 Only (dislike 3 immensly)
Dungeon Keeper 2
Age of Empires 1-3

I like most open world RPG's, and I LOVE RTS games. I just got Starcraft II not too long ago and I LOVE it. But without good internet I do not think I will enjoy it for very long. Versus A.I. gets boring, and the Campaing ends sooner or later.. One thing that will sell me on a game is an upgrade system. I love upgrading, its fun lol. That being said Dungeon Keeper and Doom will probably be my favorite games of all time for the rest of my life.

Any Suggestions?

Have you considered trying Anno series? Or Total War?

Heard of Total War, never looked into it. What is Anno? I guess I'll be looking into that then too.

Well, you can pretty much skip the first Shogun:TW and first Medieval:TW since they both have upgraded and modern-graphics sequels(remakes?). However, the very first anno(1602) is a must!-even though it's old it's still very playable.

Also, I don't know what your ethics code and stuff is, but have you considered torrenting them? Well, if you don't like pirating games, then it's okay, but you should really re-considered ebaying anything. I'm pretty sure you can buy these games in a all-in-one sort of sets at steam at(overall) cheaper price then if you purchase them separately.

Seriously now, this is a good idea for a thread. I should sticky it. I'd also suggest that for those who want to recommend games, they could also possibly consider looking into posting a review for the recommended game. The two could go hand-in-hand. O_O

I'm not really that big into FPS/RTS so unfortunately I can't really help when it comes to games such as those. The only one I really enjoy is Borderlands/Borderlands 2 but you've already got and played those so I'm left with no actual advice to give.

To be fair, alot of the stuff I mentioned was either FPS, RPG, or RTS.. Most of them a combination of each other. They seriously need to make a Dungeon Keeper 3 though. I know the company is dead, and there has been no word of anything like that in the works, but man what a GREAT game that could be..

I see. Then did you consider Mass Effect? You should play it just for the "import saves" thing, despite what many people say I liked it a lot.

Looks to me more like it was closed due to age more than anything (the forum seems to have a system where very inactive threads eventually get closed).

Though the idea behind that thread was more people giving basic reviews of games rather than asking for recommendations. We have a reviews section/thread for that sort of stuff, now. o_o

I'm into my racing games - primarily arcade-style stuff though with a preference of slightly realistic over outright arcade/cartoony - but to my knowledge there aren't any racing games out there that I've tried or heard of that I want.


So, examples of my favourite racing games (this includes some very old games unfortunately)

Rollcage (old Playstation / PC game)
Need for Speed: Most Wanted
Blur
Forza Horizon
SSX (all of them)
Pure (an ATV, SSX-like racing/stunts game)
Racedriver: Grid
Motorstorm (PS3 - all three games)

I find it difficult to describe precisely what games I like; I like most racing games or stunt/trick based games such as Skate, SSX, Pure, etc. IMHO Blur is the best racing/combat game I've played and my favourite game of all time, unfortunately it never caught on like I'd hoped it would.

The only racing games that I have knowledge of that I'd want are GTA V and Grid 2; however those are both upcoming games that are going to be released next year (I know GTA is more a sandbox game than a racing game). I've played Forza 3 and 4 and I'm not particularly too keen on straight simulators as I lack the patience to sit for hours fine-tuning a car. I don't mind simple upgrade systems a la Need for Speed series or what's in Forza Horizon.

I've got F1 2010 and F1 2011 and have no interest in F1 2012 or the F1 Superstars kart-racing game. I've also got no interest in ModNations or LittleBigPlanet kart racing despite owning a PS3.

You can probably check my Xbox profile as that might tell you what games I've played 'more' than others (the games with fewer achievements I tend to not play too much ... the exception is FlatOut 2, because the achievements on that game are just outright brutal).

The Shift series really drove that home for me. Especially since I got into actual RL track racing. NFS: Shift is the only NFS game that has ever just drawn me in from the beginning. In 1 there is basically only track racing and drifting. In 2 though you can get some DLC (unsure if it cost money or not?) That added a couple more play modes and cars. Seriously look into it.

I loved Grid. Unfortunately all I ever had was the demo from PSN, and I soon after got into Shift,so never played it again. I will be checking out Grid 2 though.

Other then that I haven't been much of a racing fan as of late. I take it to the track and get all my racing needs fulfilled there. Remember the name Shawn Collins. One day you might see me podium at any race I can get into. Gotta get noticed though..

Oh god the car handling. Especially the drifiting scenarios. Yes it's all wrong, and YES it can be DIFFICULT! but I have to admit it's the closest you can come to actual driving without being behind a wheel when it comes to video games. Notice I said when it comes to video games, because video games are so far from the truth it will never be the same or actually come CLOSE to the same, but in the end Shift brough it the closest to me. You've actually given me an idea..

For someone who likes racing and now see's what I like, what would you recommend? I like and upgrade and customization system like Shift, but I also like realistic cars, and driving.. Any idea's? How were the F1 game? I have contemplated getting them, but didn't know what to expect.

I am dearly sorry for the rather early 'bump' and this double post, just actually had another request..

I am now looking for a fantasy RPG game for the PC that is not an online only game. I suppose a connection required to install would not be something I would over look, but I am not looking for steam downloads either as this stupid Afghani internet is not any good.

So yeah, Fantasy RPG. I really really really really liked Final Fantasy XII but I do not think there is a PC version of that. Anything Final Fantasy ish would be cool. I am really just looking for a a story that can be played through multiple times, the first play through taking many hours, a good upgrade and leveling system, and something kinda original. My roommate over here has his PS3 and has been playing some sort of Fantasy/Anime/RPG game, has got me really wanting to play FFXII or something like it again.

Have you considered older games? GOG has a lot of good hard core western RPGs. Here are some of my personal recommendations (that are widely considered some of the best the genre has to offer):

Fallout (Expect isometric Fallout New Vegas, except a lot more grim.)
Fallout II (More of the above)
Baldur's Gate II (D&D C-RPG)
Planescape: Torment (D&D C-RPG)

In fact, damnit, these are culturally significant classics. You need to have played them. If you haven't, it's a disgrace, and you're an uncultured savage. It's like having not seen Da Vinci's more famous paintings, or not knowing who Mark Twain was.
