If it looks like something I'll like, boy or girl stuff, I gotta have it. I roll that way.

I've only seen them do edits when a post breaks the rules and each section has their own rules in addition to the global forum rules. Same goes for closing/deleting threads. Unless you can provide a good example there's no argument to be had.

Like what @GameGeeks said, we have different rules for different section of the forum followed by the general rules through out the whole forum.
We only delete out the spams or closing threads/posts that should not be there. I only mod a certain section of the forum, whatever I do here, Eris is in charge.

Problems with your video, @MaruDashi .

    1. Question about the commercials at 0:38, You simply have never noticed them before. Things have always been like that. It wasn't until recently that Lego produced a Pink Lego Block. >.>;

    2. "Limited at how to react to and solve problems..." at 1:43. AND?! That's exactly how we resolve things. Don't like it, then resolve them for us.

    3. At 4:00 Ad makers spend $17 billion, They obviously know how to spend they're money wisely. Use rough and tumble words to target boys, and soft and pretty words to target girls. Don't hate because it works.

    4. In the end, the only reason I feel that children are so heavily influenced by the media these day is the fact that many parents and even sitters, just plop the kids down in front of the TV instead of actually having some activities with them. Plus the video and most people are negating the fact that most of these "gender-based roles" have been that way for millennia. Sorry to bust people's bubbles, but Boys constructing stuff didn't start at age 5 with a brand new lego set. It started eons ago when Men started building homes and towns. This idea of women being homemakers isn't a new one. It's a very old one. Again, it's gone almost unnoticed until the 20th Century. Sure there are exceptions, but those are few and far between.

Otherwise the video is very accurate and true.

In regards to #1, she did two videos on that too-

The idea is that it shouldnt be rough and tumble for boys and soft and frilly for girls. Girls can be rough and boys can be frilly, but the market tells us "no, boys should be rough and kill things and girls should be cute and bake cakes". Yes, its been around for a while but norms -do- change [fun fact: the color pink used to be a 'boy' color]. And yes, while parents let commercials ween their children [in a sense] the idea is that commercials should cut out the gender role crap and just market toys to *all* children, just like parents should encourage boys to be creative with baking and maybe knitting and let girls be more aggressive by letting them play with nerf toys and such

Fair enough, but still. I mean come on, it's not like back in the early days when boys and girls up to about a toddler's age were dressed in dresses. It has more to do with society than commercialism. Marketing is only following the social trends and always has. If you want the commercials to change, then change society and/or the social image. OR you can do the epic thing and raise your children (Should/when you decide to have any) differently and not let them get sucked into commercials on the boob tube (a.k.a. TV).

I plan to whenever I decide to have any =3
But I think its interesting how Sweden seems to have gender reversal in the media [or at least in the links provided]. I agree, we so need to change the social norm to be more accepting of gender and the idea that girls can be tough and boys can be sensitive but the media puts a huge say in what is considered acceptable, even if its subtle. Whats sold to us, how its presented to us, the colors used...the media doesnt have to actually be present when its marketed to us that way too

Yea, definitely kudos to Sweden for pushing the norms. Hopefully it'll catch on with other countries.

For me, my opinion is the same as the parent company, TOP-TOY. That the ads are not trying to change gender roles but are rather showing how kids actually play with toys these days. Boys are not the only ones who play with Nerf guns; girls play with them too. Girls are not the only ones who play with a kitchen set; boys play with them too. And to top it all off, boys and girls usually play with these toys WITH EACH OTHER!!

Just like in the ads, when children play each other, even when the sexes are mixed, they play with anything around them. So a boy will pretend to bake and a girl will play with a dragon; they want to play and they will play with anything (hell, kids play with cardboard boxes when given the chance). This isn't a drastic change to gender roles, but rather a true representation of how children really play with stuff.

To answer the OP's other question, the ":-" symbol, as anyone could have guessed, is the symbol for the Swedish Krona, which is their currency. One Krona is about 15 American cents, so that's why everything "looks" expensive. In reality, the castle playset is about $98.
    This is my war face.

This is what happens to trolls who mess with me.

Wow I did not know this thread existed! I could have used some of these examples for my Sociology presentation... Just subtract those user bashers who are not contributing at all xDD

    Anyway as for the thread:

Apparently, its not only Sweden that has the issue. It is all over the world. Market system separates gender by creating goods that can separate both genders and make more money. Before all of this, there is like only one type for each toys. Sellers realize the eldest child would just hand the same toy to the younger sibling. So to earn more profit, they separate toys by gender. The eldest daughter will not give a girly toy to the youngest male sibling.

But seriously, those images are the same for gods shake. Our society separate toys for both genders. Cute pink for girls and Cool manly for boys.

It is interesting if you go to toy retailers such as TOYS r US. Most of the toys are now gender separated. And Nerf gun is one of them.

Not that I'm trying to champion the thread starter here, but to be fair I can't understand why some are using his (supposedly bad) reputation as an excuse to derail his thread. I would expect (although not condone) this sort of behavior from some regular members, but from (some) mods, it's blatantly unprofessional to say the least.

Having read thread starter's post, I see nothing in the text that would imply that he's homophobic, as it's basically a series of questions. Whether he truly is or not is another matter, but in any case, one's perception of another's reputation should not be used as an excuse to derail an otherwise, valid thread.

ON TOPIC: Good on Sweden, I say. The sooner we get rid those old-fashioned, gender-associated stereotypes, the better.

It's worth nothing that girls aren't naturally born to play with dolls as boy's aren't naturally born to play with guns. The fact that girls and boys tend to follow such "ideologies" boil mostly down to manufactured civillisation. However, such practices can be also historically linked to a natural order generally associated with mammals (including humans). In the animal kingdom a male's body is typically conditioned for hunting, whereas a female's body is typically conditioned for bearing and nurturing children. It is essentially the same with mankind, except over time natural behavior has been refined and somewhat forced though civillisation; thus, a girl playing with doll can be seen as the civillised equivelant of a female preparing to nurture a future child, while a boy playing with a gun can be seen as the civillised equivelant of a male preparing to provide for his future family.

There was once a time when "male" and "female" roles could not be practically reversed due to a lack of science and techology. Today, both science and technology have advanced such that toy dolls and toys guns are appreciated more as recreational pursuits, and arguably, that's how it should be. The modern world has allowed both genders to effectively choose their roles more out of preference than necessity, and I for one think that's progressive and a good thing.
