Default How do you stay comfy when gaming?

This applies to every platform: consoles, PC, handhelds, everything. Do you have a couch, bed, special chair, etc?

I like having both my computer and Xbox on the same desk, and when I'm not on the computer chair I'm either on my bed or a beanbag chair.

Plus some members have brought up good points about display. Small screen or big? Lit up or dimmed rooms? LED, plasma, etc?

    How bout you?

Due to my eyesight/skateboarding injuries* I have to sit in a chair where I can keep my back straight but can sit close enough to the screen without having to slouch or arch my back ...

So mostly, everything involves my gaming chair (more an office chair than a gaming chair but it's hella comfy.) since my PC, xbox, laptop, PS3, etc, are all usable from my desk. I don't play handhelds too much due to the small screens and the eye-strain they give me ... I should probably look into some method of cloning handheld displays to my TV since even a 32" display showing a 848x480 res image is preferable over a 4" screen showing the same resolution picture.

I've got multiple injuries from skateboarding, the most annoying of which is a fractured/cracked coccyx. Makes sitting down and in particular sitting in one position for more than 20 minutes rather painful, and sitting on things like sofas or kitchen chairs or even a bus seat is just too unbearable for me.. :/

I prefer to listen to music while playing games, music that fits the game I'm playing. Playing League of Legends? Then I'm listening to stuff like Bryan Adams - We're Gonna Win. xD
Playing Red Dead Redemption? Then I'll be listening to The Doors - Five to One and all that.

I'm supposed to stay comfy? o_o What is this blasphemy

Naw jk, if i'm using my hubby's PC i'll lean back on his chair and just look SUPER lazy. On my laptop, im always on our bed leaning against the wall. And depending on the game i'l plug in our Xbox controller to make it even more comfy. When it comes to playing an MMO like Mabinogi or DC Universe Online I could be uncomfortable for 3 hours and not notice.

    I miss you guys. <3

I like to make the immediate area perfect. Gather food, water, and anything else I might need to snack. Then I like to make all the items on my bed into a giant nest-like pod. My desk is close enough to my bed so that I can easily eat, game, and lay down at the same time.

To be honest, I really should replace my couch, which has been like passed through 3 owners--needless to say, it's getting ragged, but it's still comfy! Sometimes I'll use my camping chair though (say, if I have visitors); more mobile, foldable and very ergonomic, and like there's a huge pocket thingy underneath where you can store stuff, like uhm... snacks and things. Normally I'll play games through my plasma TV, which sits on a make-shift TV bench at eye level--can't stand a TV that's too low or high off the ground...

Picture quality and input response are the most important things to me in gaming since they make a difference to my sense of involvement; so to this end, I've religously avoided LED TV sets; for none which I've tested have passed in these basic requirements, and their analog input-handling circuits tend to be cheap, so many of my older games look simply awful, especially in motion.

I've been told to steer away from plasma TVs due to burn-in issues (repetitive/static images, especially game HUDs).

I have an LED TV though and for the most part it's a good screen. Only drawbacks are some noticeable input lag compared to my old LCD TV (seems roughly 16-20ms, my old TV was like 8-12) and the screen is quite shiny, so glare. Enabling 'game mode' got rid of most of the lag but in turn a lot of ghosting with black occurs, though that can actually end up producing a fake motion blur effect which does kinda look nice.

Have an LED gaming PC monitor too. Only thing I hate is it's small (20" widescreen) but since it's for backup/playing old games on it, the size doesn't matter.

For me picture quality doesn't matter. My only concerns for a TV are the following:

    a) resolution (1920x1080 or gtfo)
    b) low or little glare (my TV fails at this)
    c) low latency (my TV also used to fail at this, fixed it through using system settings/switching to HDMI)

    ... I think I'm getting off-topic. :/

Lol! That's exactly what I end up doing, but only if I'm forced to sit on the floor! XD

    ... I think I'm getting off-topic. :/
At the risk of also getting off-topic (Can't resist opportunities for techy talk...):

Well, if you're happy with your LED, far be it from me to ruin things by pointing out LED disadvantages. Also, I've known certain folk to have become unhappy with their sets (both LED and plasma) after reading into "issues" that they didn't notice until someone (like me) pointed them out. That being said, I have mentioned some, but have also put them inside a spoiler--so if you do read them well, your funeral... =P I've also listed some plasma issues as well so as to minimise bias, and also since I'm not particularly for one technology or against another; it's just that plasma so happens to tick many more boxes for me over LED.

For the record, I've never had any burn-in issues with the plasma I currently use, nor any with the previous one that I'm trying to sell. I have avoided burn-in by simply running some random TV channel for 10-20 minutes per 2-3 hours of gaming; in most cases that's enough to clear image retention (if not, then I can also use the scrolling bar function built into my TV to clear more stubborn IR), which at worst is barely percievable, and a small exchange for (arguably) better picture quality.

Screen-burn is always a possibility with any plasma TV, but the risk is highly unlikely unless someone is in the habit of say... playing the same video game over and over and for excessive periods of time (which I'm not...). Screen-burn is neither an issue with my viewing nor gaming habits (and I've had extensive sessions with the latter at times); so for me, the performance advantages of plasma (rich colours, deep blacks, consistent uniformity, fast response times etc.) easily outweigh an otherwise, excessive (and frankly unhealthy) level of gaming freedom permitted by LED TVs.

Common (PQ) issues with Plasma TVs:

Plasma TVs do have some picture quality issues; these can be barely noticeable to mildly distracting depending on the quality of the parts in the panel; panel-driving software and permitted power supply. Coarser dithering effects, posterisation, increased phosphor lag, compromised black levels (due to glare from external and internal light) and line bleeding are commonly associated with cheaper plasma panels. Line bleedling has become inevitable with all plasma panels manufactured from 2010, since power restrictions (imposed by the EU and equivelant regulators) have also lead to less power available for each line of pixels per panel. Panasonic plasma panels tend to have the best picture quality and motion handling, but are unsurprisingly more expensive than the plasma panels from Samsung and LG. At the end of the day you get what you pay for.

Why I don't like LED TVs:

I don't like LED TVs (which are basically LCD TVs with LED backlighting) for the simple reason that every model I've tested (including those of Samsung, Sony, Toshiba and LG) has forced me to choose between motion resolution or input response for gaming; and either choice has some negative effect on picture quality. So, if I want an LED to resolve all 1080 lines of resolution I have to select a setting that forces extra picture processing (I know why this is the case actually, but it's too long to explain...), and therefore increased input lag which I'm pretty sensitive to. Moreover, some picture processing modes simply insert false frames and sharpening effects to create some illusion of higher motion resolution; it's amusing for a while, but soon becomes an annoying when I want to playback a film or some other HD material that's visually fine to begin with. Conversely, if I want an LED to respond optimally to input from my gamepad, I have to accept some "game mode" setting, and therefore tolerate blurry images due to the minimised picture processing--so much for 1920x1080 in real-world terms then... Then there's the inferior uniformity... nothing worse than watching a football match and getting distracted by the "jail bar" (or dirty screen) effect everytime the camera pans from one side of the pitch to the other. If you haven't noticed such blemishes with yours, I strongly suggest you don't go looking for them, as it's something (like dead pixels) quite challenging to ignore once noticed.

I sit on the floor with the lights off at all times. I don't need a pillow or anything. The floor works great. I usually sit Indian style or lay on my stomach when I play.

In fairness I did point out that I have long noticed that 'dirty screen' effect (I call it 'ghosting', it's where the screen can't update a change from black pixels to non-black as quickly as it can change from a white/coloured pixel to a black pixel, it leaves a sort of temporary black 'ghost') but it doesn't bother me, as it does produce a fake motion blur effect which in some games looks alright ... but it's still never bothered me. I haven't yet noticed any dead pixels, though my old TV did have a few ... again, something that I never really let myself get bothered by.

I also specifically don't notice a difference in picture quality between normal mode and 'game mode', except I know that what it does is it disables the additional picture processing (in effect cuts the screen resolution from 100Hz to 50Hz) and in turn bumps up the response time to make the TV more suitable for gaming on. To me, I haven't seen a particular difference except there's less ghosting (dirty screen) with game mode turned off, and the picture display and sound settings are set to default and disabled so they cannot be changed (again, due to post-processing picture effects being disabled).

I take it though. Less input lag.

The problem was that I was forced between choosing a nice 32" Samsung TV that had component cable input (which at the time I needed due to my PVR setup) or a 26" LG TV that did not have it. So, I had no choice to go for the Samsung. I was VERY adamant in the TV store that the TV 'must be suitable for gaming', but evidently the PR worker there had no idea what I was talking about ... I think I pointed out that it needed to be good for gaming (i.e. designed for gaming, have a 'low response time', etc, etc, etc) fifteen times and it must have gone straight over her head.

I didn't have a choice anyway. I found out after getting the TV home that the input lag using component cables was horrible (40-50ms difference between audio through the speakers and through my turtle beach which was hooked directly to my xbox and thus had no latency). I was pissed for the grand total of about five hours, when I remembered that my old TV had a gaming mode option on it and I scuttled about in the manual for any references, found there was a system setting for it, turned it on, corrected picture settings (mainly backlight and contrast) and found the video latency had vastly decreased (audio latency was still the same though)

I later found out that the TV just simply hates component cable - notably through playing Borderlands 2 on both console and PC and finding that with the exact same video settings (1280x720), both with gaming mode enabled, and same frame rate (30fps), the game was more responsive on my PC. The only difference? My PC uses HDMI. So I swapped the cables around for a test. Boom, the only input lag is now frame lag and wireless lag (playing at 30fps gives around 5-6ms of input lag and xbox wireless controllers have about 5-10ms of lag anyway I think)

So really, right now my only complaints are the glare ... but I'm planning on pestering my mum to help me get some blinds for my room, as my curtains are unsatisfactory for blocking sunlight - this is going to become a major issue in the winter, where the sun at highest rise shines STRAIGHT THROUGH MY WINDOW AGAINST MY TV and is a real nuisance.

The other solution is to get my old Toshiba Regza fixed (or to possibly find an unused version of the same model) as, despite the TV actually not being true HD (has 1366x768 panel res instead of 1920x1080 - makes displaying anything beyond 1280x720 pointless quality-wise), it was PERFECT for gaming. It had component cable, it had HDMI, it was simple, it had a matte screen (little glare), the colours were good, it would display pretty much any resolution you threw at it (1680x992? yeah, that happened), and best of all ... the screen latency was so minimal that I never even realised it HAD input lag. Unfortunately it blew up (a capacitor went or something), and had developed something of a nasty white-tear / overheating issue (it would get VERY hot along the top edge, and any white images (such as sky on desktop backgrounds, even the white lines on the windows 7 window themes) would quickly leave a nice and obvious white ghost in the backlight of the TV. This may well be due to that I used the TV as a PC monitor and regularly had several Firefox windows open and stationary for hours in the hot summers (and I wasn't allowed to use a desk fan to keep it cool), but the problem bled through to HUDs in games (such as Dirt Showdown) as well, eventually.

I think it was just general age and potentially a panel heatsink or fan burned out or blocked up and stopped being able to dissipate the heat generated by running a 50Hz screen at 60Hz (yeah, it didn't like that) or by running a 1366x768 panel at a hacked 1600x900 (yeah - hacked. I hacked my nVidia panel to force that resolution). But I miss that TV. If I ever get it fixed, this Samsung is going on the spare table and will stay there.

Oh well. Lots of off-topic. Time to go lounge on my uber-soft couch and eat muffins and watch Red Dwarf on my laptop. :3

The end of my bed faces my TV so I usually sit there and game, but if I get super lazy I'll lay back on the other side where the headboard is and look lazy as hell.

Series X is airing on Dave. whoo whoo~

And ... I don't have any personal preference for lighting, except that there isn't too much light reflecting off of the screen. I don't have a dimmer or anything (cheap-donkey apartment) but the bulbs in this place are trash and aren't that bright anyway. My curtains are also almost always closed ... they're only open when it's dark outside, because of glare and stuff.

I used to have two comfortable chairs to sit in, but my brother took them out of my room, broke both and brought them back and said "Uhh....... Your chairs are broken.". He owes me 2 chairs. It sucks since my back is still jacked up and i can't fix this broken chair. I just end up sitting my mattress at an angle against the wall.

Yeah, I stopped letting people get away with 'borrowing' my stuff back when my brother broke my PS2. I 'borrowed' his PSP in return ... he's left my stuff alone ever since.

He didn't get away with it. Let's just say I replaced a couple bolts in his bedframe, and it broke a day later. The thing that made it funnier was in the same day, his XBox got the red ring of death. Now I know he's not gonna touch my stuff again!

I can only be comfy in winter, especially in cold and rainy days (snow would be even better but we don't have that here) here are a few simple steps:
    1-Heat up water.
2-Buy a rubber wattle container. (We have a term for it here, don't know the translation) and fill it with boiling water. Close it.
3-Prepare tea, cappuccino or any other warm beverage of your choice.
    4-Get a cat.
    5-Put box next to computer.
    6-Place cat inside box.
7-Spank cat until he is quietly sleeping inside the box (or dead).
8-Wrap a blanket around you and sit in your chair/couch.
    9-Place beverage on table.
10-Place hot water rubber thingy on lap.
11-Enjoy video games while sipping your warm drink and using your warm water thing/dead cat to warm your hands while it rains outside.

Congratulations, if you have followed these 11 simple steps you can now say you are comfy!

Me i prefer something in between Indian style and meditating when im playing mmos but if i do a visual novel i take a blanket get something to put my legs on stretch out grab my mouse (easier to do with wireless mouse/controller) and get comfy cause ill be there for a while ha ha, but truly finding out how others stay comfortable may help you decide but its all about your preferences and your situation but here is some tips that might help

If you play barefoot, in shorts, or for hours on end make sure to keep your feet, knees, and hands warm believe it or not this helps a lot more so when you go to sleep
Try to have water, juice, or something healthy to drink nearby i find its easier to play games when i am not thirsty
Don't have music/sound blasting have it quite having a headaches and gaming do not go well together
Stretch whenever you get a chance or else you might get really uncomfortable
Don't eat and play at the same time its not fun having a mess and a dead character (try watching anime while you eat or a movie)

Other stuff that help but are well not the easiest or the best idea

Have some type of sugar nearby believe it or not eating sugar will help your mind if done in the right amount (this varies from person to person)
