Almost every military man I've ever known is a jarhead. They are fairly ignorant, violent, drug-addict, and unintelligent. Very few people are like my Uncle who joined the US Air Force, used available grants to do ten years for law school, and then get a very successful job and buy a .8 acres of land with a full four floor house taking up .2 of those acres.

Ah cool. My brother was a Submariner in the Navy, so most of the terminology gets lost on me. Not sure what a Gunner's Mate and Master at Arms are or do, but Gunner's mate sounds like you man the guns on the above water ships during battle stations. As for Master at Arms, I'm sure if you bust your butt to do the best job you can as a Gunner's Mate, you can get the Master at Arms job. Anyway, Good luck with Basic and AIT.

Oh that sucks, not only Jarheads but crappy ones that bring dishonor to the corps. Well, not every one in the Military is like that. Glad to hear your Uncle choose to raise above and set himself up for success for after getting out.

It exactly states my opinion. I'm fine with the army, but if they decide to murder innocent people.. that's crossing the line. And what exactly was messed up about my comment? You know that small group of jerks are actually the problem right? One of those jerks killed 16 innocent people and one of those jerks bombarded a Afghan farmer who was singing.

I have respect for the military as a whole. Individual dummies in the military that can't do their job right may take longer to earn my respect. My grandfather was a WWII veteran when he fought in the pacific theatre. I have some friends in the military that barely keep in touch with since they are so busy. I have an acquaintance in my church that is in the navy and will soon start the selective process for the SEALS. I thought that was pretty neat.
Yeah, I like the military.

Frankly, I don't give a damn.

Some people here on the forum are in the military, and they are really nice people. But I don't see the use for military deployment anywhere except in the places where things are really escalating, or where resque missions are needed. But just for you guys:

America spends like 50% of all their spendings on the military. To compare:
The Netherlands spend LESS THAN 1% on the military.

Seriously, and you wonder why you have economical problems? Sheesh.

that just means that when the sh!t does hit the fan, you guys are gonna seriously get messed up. and like Neph said, financially you guys aren't looking too pretty.
lastly, the military does not get 50% of the budget. It gets roughly 20%. The biggest expense in the US is Medicare & Medicaid at 23%. Stupid old people.

Yes, that's true. But investing more money isn't going to make a big difference for a small country like the Netherlands. But we're doing pretty good financially-wise, I think you are speaking of Europe.

But I think the amount of money spent on military depends on the country, America is big and needs to protect itself and others. The Netherlands are small, fragile and get most of their support from other countries like Germany and America too probably.

We were referring to Denmark with the financial thing. Netherlands economy works because your taxes and petroleum are extreme o.O;
Although I do love the way your vice taxes work. I wish they would implement that over here in the states, instead of making all the junk food cheap, and the healthy stuff expensive as hell. Still I wouldn't want to be anywhere else but the good old USA.

Europe is a continent. The netherlands are in Europe and you've been in the European Union since the 50s.
So tell me, how exactly am i confusing you with you?

Your economy is extremely dependent on how the EU is doing. And since mainly Greece is royally f'king the EU right now, everyones economy is on the downhill. The whole EU is like a life support system for countries that can't seem to take care of themselves. And when one member in the group is having an extra hard time, that member gets screwed by the others, and its all perfectly acceptable. Its rather sad if you ask me.

The US has -16 trillion and we're still kicking a$$ and taking names. Thats how you know when you're on top.

Ah, I see. Sorry.

We have high taxes because our country is much more socialistic compared to America. America is liberalistic: the taxes are low and they have a great environment for the development of the economy. America emphasizes individuality. That's why America is called the Land of Opportunity.

The Netherlands on the other hand is really socialistic, that means higher taxes and less ''economic space'' but on the other hand a better health-care system, more solidarity and more economic equality. Europe emphasizes the community. That's why the European dream is called "gezelligheid" which is *funnily enough* the dutch word for a cozy, inclusive environment.

Sorry for the derail, but this is really interesting.

Edit:

@Kaleohano

Yes, you're right we are indeed a part of Europe. But the financial situation in Europe as a whole is not the same as the financial situation in the Netherlands. Although Europe makes trading and traveling between countries really easy. We are not extremely dependent on the European Union, that is a huge misunderstanding. On the contrary, dutch politicians are often discussing whether to leave the EU or not, because giving money to Greece really harms our economy.

And it's not that easy Kale (Can I call you Kale?), the EU has a ton of rules we have to follow strictly. The Greek Government neglected those rules and they shall bear the consequences now. Other Europian countries invested such an immense amount of money on Greece, but they always screwed up because they didn't follow the rules. We can't give them money forever. So it's only moral to kick Greece out of the EU.

I agree with killing innocent people is crossing the line, but I do understand the human margin of error. Some situations cannot be helped, while others absolutely made bad decisions and should be punished by it.

It's more than just military spending that adds to our financial issues. But if you want the data. Here it is. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...y_expenditures Yes the U.S. is on top by a large margin, but if you look Holland is 19th in military spending. Plus you also have to understand where a lot of the money is going to for our military, aside from personel there's multi-million dollar vehicles that we're trying to replace because they've been around since the Korean War. Right now the U.S. Air Force is utilizing 4 airframes whose technology has been around since the 1950's. Granted there's no specific plane that's over 50, these models have been around for years. You also had to had in the R&D and the millions of other vehicles, weapons, and weapon systems that have been around forever. All this isn't the main reason for spending 4.7% of the GDP, but it's a good chunk. This helps to explain that http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Militar..._United_States. Also, this is current budget. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2013_Un...federal_budget

Now I'm not arguing that we spend a lot on the military, nor that a good bit of that spending is wasteful. I'm just trying to get the facts out.
Good ol' Dogs never Die, they just keepin on livin' till their time comes.

Edit:

@Kaleohano

I shall summarize your whole statement.

America is f'kin awesome a filled with individuals capable of taking care of themselves.
The Netherlands and the rest of Europe is filled with groups of weak, heard-like people who can't bring themselves to stop suckling on governments tit because of fear of the plague.
Have fun standing in line for several months to get a new kidney.

And yes, it is that easy. Greece faked up. Now they get punished for it. Fair in my opinion. But once again, the rest europe failed to resolve a problem before it got really bad. Now people are blaming it 100% on greece, even though the rest of the EU was aware of the direction greece was heading in and could have done many things to prevent it.

Meanwhile in america

Haha, you are funny. I do agree with you though, Europe doesn't have the balls to take any action apart from giving Greece money. If they just got rid of the corrupt Greek Government things would become so much easier.

And about your summary. Whatever makes you happy.

in all fairness, you just reacted as rudely as he did. You let him get under your skin which is probably exactly what he was aiming for. The least you could have done is tried to respond to the actual statement rather than the tone of it.

I actually replied to the content first, if you look back. I said http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyperbole before I quoted, and then reacted to the tone of the message.

Also, what's wrong with being a "16 year old college student"?

No, you dodged the point he was making. A proper response would have been admitting that you had guessed wrong on the US spending on the military. Its called growing a pair and admitting to your mistakes.

Theres nothing wrong with it, I'm just saying that I expected a more educated response from you.

I guess I just didn't feel like it after being told to stop breathing. But since when did you become my teacher in social interaction?

Also, don't expect much from me. That way you won't be disappointed. xD

American cannot take care of itself. The government debt, the constant bailouts of the banks and the like, the state of our economy, the sheer number of people on welfare benefits, etcetera, etcetera.

Anyways, I understand that Kaleohano's opinion at anime-forums.com was not treated so well, but Kaleohano himself has acted very rude and narrow-minded towards people over there as well, and he did so towards people who did not deserve such treatment as well as towards those who did, practically calling people idiots when he himself is not the sharpest tool in the shed. Causing a ruckus with his harsh, bigoted, and often incorrect and meaningless platitudes, and so on and so forth. That is all I'll say on that.
