    Default Night photography

I always loved those long exposure 'star trails' pictures but never had a camera that could do that until recently. Yesterday I attempted to take some for the first time, and I think they came out pretty well! These are both around 2hrs worth of exposure.

The moon has also been a favorite of mine to shoot, I always tried with my old point'n'shoots but never had really good pics (except the one I'll show below). Back a couple months ago when we had the 'super moon' I had just got my Canon 60D literally the day before. So I threw on the Canon 70-300 I also got and went outside to capture the super moon. Well I didn't even know yet how to change a lot of the settings! And I didn't even have a tripod yet! I still can't believe the shot even came out using a lot of the default settings and hand held.

But anyhow, here is the super moon from this summer:

Here is a nice shot of the moon slightly into the waning gibbous phase. This time I had a tripod and at least knew how to adjust more of the settings lol:

But even still the 70-300 focus is extremely touchy at that range. And I don't think it was perfect in that picture. Still working on it.

And here is the best shot I ever got with a point and shoot, my trusty Canon S5:

This was one of those times the moon is huge and dull orange just barely over the horizon early in the evening. And that is as orange as it appeared to the naked eye. Hope to catch a similar shot with the new camera sometime. Sorry that's as big as that one gets, its 100% crop with the 8mp sensor.

These are from a couple years ago with my Canon S5. It was in the middle of the night and was very foggy. There was also a full moon out and clear skies which illuminated the fog and made everything glow. Well it didn't come out with the same effect on the camera but this is what I got anyhow:

Very cool shots! You got pretty lucky with the long exposures, no planes came through! For the moon, your focus looks good, usually it stays a bit blurry because of the atmosphere and not the actual focus. 300mm is still a tad too short to get enough of the frame filled with the moon. I'm looking at trying with a 400 lens and a 2x adapter, but it's still not quite enough.

I like that last shot a lot myself, you captured the atmosphere pretty well, even without a dSLR!

    Hey thanks @Kaitou Ace !
Well I wasnt as lucky as you think with the planes. Very unlucky. I edited most of them out, but 2 are still present in the north star one if you look. They were the least obtrusive so I let em be. It wasnt one big long continuous exposure, but for my first attempt I thought I'd try the multi-exposure and then use software to overlap them. It was like a few hundred 30 second exposures (each). Had to view every single frame and inspect for planes. Each plane was usually in about 4 frames. In the end I spent a few hours of editing, and my freakin' slow laptop that keeps locking up didnt help. lol. I want to try a single long exposure next. That will be a little trickier to do, but the editing should be much simpler.

About the moon, yeah I wish I had money for a 400 and a 2x but my new setup is already way more than I planned to spend, I mean its just a hobby, I do nothing professional. I just enjoy taking pictures. But yeah, with the 300, I do believe those moon pics are 100% crops (I mean the bigger versions when you click on them).

Thanks for the heads up! I've never really looked at the photography contest thread before, maybe I'll start paying more attention. Though none of them would qualify sadly, the star trails are multi-exposure and unsightly planes were removed. The fog ones maybe, I'll have to check the originals too see if they were 1+ seconds. I did try a continous 2hr star exposure but it did not turn out as well. The sky wasnt as clear either. But maybe I can try some more shots before the deadline. I'll be working nights though for a while, so no chance for doing much more night photagraphy for a while.

Have tried many more attempts at star trails but I think my first batch was actually best. I need to find a more interesting foreground, but so far I have only tried it from my house.

I've tried single long exposures but have yet to come up with decent results. Here are a couple of my most recent multi-exposure sessions, first one is about 20 frames (about 15 minutes) and the second is 80 frames (about 1hr), and lastly about 2 hrs:

Last ones a bit too much. But thought I'd include it just so you can see what the effect of duration is from the same set of pictures.

Havent been able to get any of the star trail programs to work in Linux, so I did these ones all manually, adding together all the images in Gimp.

Epic, one of your photos looks exactly like one of the photos I also took from the moon.
