I AM BACK EVERYBODY.
Narifumi has gotten himself into quite the pickle. If being seduced by his girlfriend’s sister Shizuku wasn’t bad enough, now she’s gone to another world in an effort to obtain an evil power to rule the world with! Using an ancient gate only she and her sister Kasumi can open, she’s going to give her body over to the demons on the other side in an effort to further her ambitions. Kasumi is not about to just let her acquire the power though, and she’s going to have to rally her friends and fellow protectors of the gate to help her stop her sister’s evil desires. Dragging Narifumi along for the ride, they’ll have to battle against demons and unearthly creatures in an effort to stop Shizuku and prevent the same destruction that happened to the other world from happening to theirs. Not all the girls are gung-ho about this adventure and jealousy towards Narifumi and Kasumi’s relationship may work against them in their efforts to save the earth. They can only hope some people gain a little perspective before the battle is done.
Black Gate is another in a continuing line of Bible Black clones that could never measure up to their original. Like Sex Craft before it, we are again met with the distinctive character designs that made Bible Black stand out among a bastion of similarity. While the designs may be uniquely similar to one another, they are by no means of the same quality. I’m not sure exactly what happened, but I really didn’t find any of the characters appealing, and they often seemed to have something akin to squished faces and strange looking bodies. Animation-wise, there were the same types of problems that usually occur with hentai titles, just too many corners cut and scenes repeated. This is even less forgivable given the relative lack of sex scenes throughout. Which does translate to more of a focus on the story elements, but problems persist there as well.
It’s not the inherent quality of the story that’s the problem here, it just doesn’t go anywhere. So falls another title expectantly ending with a “to be continued” that will never be. As is often a problem with titles that are cut short, there isn’t sufficient time to flesh out the characters, their motives or the story elements. They do a valiant job with on setting up the background information behind the gate and the events that transpired around it, especially for a hentai title. This, however, just ends up as a waste of time since the series never goes anywhere with it. I would say they would have been better off just filling the whole thing with sex scenes, but unfortunately that’s the real weak link here.
I mean, while I may constantly go on about their lack of stories, most sane people are still watching hentai titles for just one thing: the naughty bits. I can give credit to Black Gate for trying to have a more elaborate plot, but they still have to get the sex scenes right! Aside from the poor character designs and animation, which definitely detract from the scenes, they just aren’t that interesting to begin with. Between the shoddy camera angles and trite acts, there’s really nothing to get excited about. There are two loli characters of note, one which is in a yuri scene and the other has a little fun with Narifumi. Although, when they have sex she goes from looking as if she’s half his height to being just as tall, probably in an effort to make it seem less creepy. That’s about it for questionable content, unless you have something against humanoid demons that get in on the fun once or twice.
Black Gate just ends up with too many things working against it to be a truly enjoyable foray. The plot wasn’t bad; it just ends far short of where it was originally intended, whereas the sex scenes are not good enough for it to rest its laurels on in spite of that fact. There’s more promise with where the OVA could have gone, rather than where it ended up
