But elrond now knows another townie. He/she can cross one person off their list of potential wolves.
He/she can now defend theoden, which is something that the others can pick up on, helping them identify 2 townies.

True, there is no immediate gain for anyone besides elrond, but in the long run, it could help narrow the field.

Problem with that. If Elrond trys to hint or help Theoden in a situation, the wolves can easily pick up on it and kill them quick. Not saying it won't able, just saying that it's gonna be tricky for both Elrond and Theoden now.
