Rain like falling wishes
Pooling in the dark
The feelings in their heart
Could catch with but a spark
They came black-eyed
With dreams for rosaries
They smelled so sweet
Of sweat and rosemary

I opened my arms
Said “your twenty years are though
I have not a house
But my home I give to you
Rest your jilted head
Sing no marching songs
But the music that you
Kept silent for so long”

No panacea could now
Cure the heartache in their eyes
But even with the pain
A handful of smiles fly
And skim the stars and grasp
Bring them down to that place
That cozy hellish shelter
Reprieve from their endless race
