Yep. We've had too many "massacres" (like the one at Virginia Tech) to need to question that assertion.

He was doing pretty well so far, which may imply that in an emergency, hitchhiking may be a good last resort if you are a white male; but also may imply that it's not the best mode of reliable transportation.

Your probably confused with "hiking" which is walking/ climbing up a mountain. (if im correct) Hitchhiking is just asked to people if they go in the same direction you do and if you can get a ride.
