Default Wait what? Tom and Jerry was for adults?

    Acording to TVtropes
Despite the Looney Tunes and Tom And Jerry DVDs having a warning on the DVD cases that these are intended for adult collectors still doesn't stop places like FYE from placing them in the kids section.
When was this? When was Tom and Jerry or Loony Toons EVER intended for adults? I thought those were kids cartoons all along, like Disney's Peter Pan, Goofy, etc.

Childhood is a time when you like Jerry and admire his cleverness.
Maturity is a time when you understand that Jerry is a completely A-hole and you feel sorry for Tom.

There's also a lot of use of alcohol in that anime. So many times when either two of them are swigging at it for various reasons.

It's a cartoon, not an anime. From my understanding it was originally WW2 propaganda, and the evil cat was Nazi Germany.

Yea, I've noticed the alcohol, but you've gotta remember what the times were like back then. Alcohol wasn't a huge deal, and neither was smoking. As far as propaganda, I'm pretty sure that's not true. Usually WWII Propaganda is point blank, not beat around the bush with silly ideas of someone representing this or that, unless they had actually labeled it as such in the cartoon.

Spike is still my favorite character though.

This reminds me of that one episode of Eek! The cat which had something about cartoon censorship.
I think it's utterly stupid. I can understand Stripperella (lol), but Tom & Jerry? Come on, people.

Yeah the show can be perceived as politically incorrect for a bunch of people with their panties in a wad. It was some slap stick comedy to help with the great depression situation at that time.. A lot of boomerangs shows can be considered for adults. Since all contain massive violence or politically incorrect things.

A good graph in the evolution of cartoon violence

I own several T&J compilations and not one of those DVD cases states such a warning; moreover they all bear the U (Universal) age rating, which strictly means that the material is suitable for both adults and children, not one or the other. That been said, the one instance where said warning might apply is for uncut, collector editions of T&J (along with a higher age rating); however, by nature these editions would most certainly include material that is normally censored or removed in normal broadcasting or in normal (i.e. mainstream) video releases.

Also if you look up the history of T&J and note the period of its release you'll come to realise why it was as much targeted at adults as children. Moreover, the classic T&J cartoons (i.e. those originally created by Hanna and Barbera, and produced by Fred Quimby from 1940) were purposely released to video with re-edited material and removed scenes so as to comply with modern-day obligations of political correctness (some of the older original material is now officially regarded as racist) and in response to complaints about certain material being considered by parents as unsuitable for children (scenes of Tom smoking for instance). Censored versions of classic T&J cartoons are still aired on kid-orientated TV networks today for the above reasons, and chances are, those are the ones you may have viewed and regarded as "kids cartoons" (save for the newer series of T&J which are actually aimed at kids).

Finally, to answer your question "Since when was Tom and Jerry EVER intended for adults?": it's not that T&J was necessarily targeted at any particular demographic in the first place; rather, it's the fact that Warner Bros. (who partly own the T&J franchise today) purposely redefined the demographic so as to draw maximum profits, thereby inciting the ignorant belief that T&J is entirely for the amusement of kids (an easier demographic to please and thus more profitable) and not intended for an adult audience.

Wait, so that means there is a NEW T&J series now? I thought the only eps of this were reruns of the originals (which were originally made well before I was born, by about 40 to 60 years (not quite sure exactly when they were first made)).

Also I'm quite SURPRISED at some of the things they make today in cartoons. Watch things like The Regular Show, which at first seems to be made for kids, but watch enough eps and you'll see some "double meaning" jokes, where a character says something that can mean something "kid friendly" or something nasty, and kids won't recognize the bad meaning of the joke and so won't be negatively affected by it (even though if they did get it, it wouldn't be good for them), while adults (who are probably watching the cartoon with their kids, cause usually people with kids like to watch things together as a family) are old enough that the bad meaning isn't "inappropriate" for them and also old enough to get the bad meaning of the joke. So that way they can get away with slipping in some nasties into a kids cartoon which would be the LAST PLACE you'd ever expect to find such jokes. So my point is, old cartoons like Tom and Jerry, didn't have such jokes, so in many ways modern cartoons that are aimed at kids are actually WORSE.

No, There is a new Tom & Jerry. It comes on right after the re-runs, much like the new Looney Tunes comes on after it's re-runs during the day (evening shows don't follow re-runs though). The New Tom & Jerry is pretty decent too.
