Default [News] Internet Providers To Start Punishing Pirates

Internet Providers To Start Punishing Pirates in July 2012.

    How you might ask?

This July major US Internet service providers will start assisting copyright holders in their fight against online copyright infringement. Major ISPs including Comcast, Verizon and Time Warner Cable will begin fulfilling their obligations under the terms of a Memorandum of Understanding signed last year, which will see the providers send out copyright infringement warnings to their millions of customers.

Under a White House and lawmaker supported “Memorandum of Understanding” (MOU) published last July, ISPs will send advisories to alleged copyright-infringing customers.

The first so-called ‘Initial Educational Steps’ will advise customers that copyright infringement is illegal and a breach of the ISP’s terms of service, that legal alternatives are available, and that continuing to infringe may have consequences including account suspension or termination.

The Acknowledgment Step, reached when an Internet subscriber is accused of additional infringements by rights holders, will see ISPs send Copyright Alerts requiring acknowledgment of receipt from account holders along with a pledge to end infringing activity from the account.

Should several attempts at ‘educating’ a subscriber fail, ISPs will be able to send a Mitigation Measure Copyright Alert which again requires customer acknowledgment. It will advise that a customer has received prior warnings and as per the ISPs terms of service, a ‘Mitigation Measure’ will now be applied to the account.

So there you go. Your ISP account can be terminated or just slowed down if you're caught downloading illegal stuff or just suspected of it really. You'll be educated about it and all sorts of goodies.

A lot of people are not happy with this [for many obvious reasons] but a main one is the company slowing your connection that you pay for.

People be really pushing this stuff here lately.

Until filters are put in place disallowing downloading. I'll talk to my sister she works for the city library here...will be interesting to see what provisions they'll have?

They've been 'doing this' for the last ten or fifteen years or so here... has it stopped anybody? The simple answer is 'no, not really.' lol.

All that will happen is that this will throw up an influx of 'small' broadband reseller companies, who will offer customers cheaper internet packages and won't adhere to these new rules. That's what happened here a good few years ago. A lot of the major ISPs lost quite a bit of money/customers from people migrating to new ISP services who didn't block/limit p2p downloading.

Kinda reminds me when they announced they were implementing traffic download caps for US customers. The response was classic. Sorry, but I just find it humorous.

I can think of how you can get around this, but I'm not sure if it would work all that well since it is an ISP. It would depend on whether or not you could hide stuff from your ISP.

However, if there is a will, there will eventually be a way.

Thanks to Ms Lucy for this awesome, funny gif.

The person that you are now is not the person that I used to know. You're becoming a stranger that I've never met before. Not liking the change though.
