    Default Fellow foreigners! How do you present yourself to a english speaker?

    I often meet people from different parts of the world, since I live in a dorm located on the campus of my university. Since I share dorm with foreigners I quite often have to speak english. When I introduce myself for the first time to a new person, even if they don't speak swedish, I almost always pronounce my name with the swedish accent, even if my name is not un-common in for example England or so. I do not really know why I do this ... but I guess it's the old habit of it.

    My name with swedish accent:

    My name with english accent: http://heracleums.org/tools/pronunci...n/of/Karolina/

    Attachment 59117

    * How do you introduce yourself? Do you pronounce your name in english or in your own language?

    How come?

    * Also, for all you english speakers out there: do you have anything against when someone pronounce their name in another accent then the english one? Do you take it offensive, or something similar like that?

    I've always pronounced my name with a Danish accent. I'm not quite sure why though.. Maybe it's just a bad habbit of mine.
    Besides, my name is quite uncommon even in Denmark, because it's a double-name.

    I pronounce my name in an English accent, because that's how they read it. If I have two coworkers abroad who are discussing an email I sent them, and I present myself over the phone to discuss it, it's kinda good if they realize I'm the same person who sent the mail.

    If they're in Japan, I say my name with a Japanese accent, otherwise they get confused as all hell for some reason. I need to append -u to the end of my name, and play down the r's a bit.

    Well I say my name obviously with an American English accent, I can sound differently than when I would speak Illonggo (Tagalog, at times) or in Chinese. I manage to say things right or wrong, but I always ask if I would say things correctly just in case. ^^;

    I also have a dual first name but since most English speaker can't pronounce the second part I usually only introduce myself as Pedro instead of Pedro Henrique.
    The proper pronunciation is this: http://translate.google.com/#pt|en|P...Henrique%0A%0A
    And English just wrecks it: http://translate.google.com/#en|pt|P...rique%0A%0A%0A

    I love it when people pronounce their names in their accent/own language. I think it makes it sound more unique and memorable. I also try my hardest to say their name back the same way they said it to me out of respect. =]

    first,It's convenient to know that I'm not the only one here English is not her mother language .

    and fortunately my name is not pronounced in a different accent in english it's just the same no difference...

    It always amuses me (in a good way!) when people say their names in their own accents. I, too, try to replicate them, and I usually get them fairly correct (according to them, not some deluded sense of awesomeness on my part... After all, any perceived awesomeness on my part would never be delusional :3 ...) but the harsh names always stump me xD

    I introduce myself along with the way my name is meant to be pronounced in Dutch. If people have a hard time with that, I tell them they can use the American way.

    Hahaha at least the Swede pronunciation is pretty much correct for the first 70% Yeh I think a lot of people struggle with my second first name mostly because it's hard to pronounce the rique.

    How do you manage to say my name then? I think mine is much easier to pronounce compared to yours (no offense ofc). I have tried to say your name a couple of times now but I still can't make it sound even close to the "correct way". The first part of your name goes so-so, but the second part is bloody impossible! xD No wonder you don't use to tell people the other half of your name.
    ... You don't feel bad about it, or do you?

    I feel awful. ;-;

    I tried to say your name and I think it sounds alright. I emphasize the "Ka" and a lit bit of the "ro". The google translate voice says it pretty much the same way as I do though I say the "na" at the end a bit lower mostly because of a bad habit due to being in Australia for so long.
    Haha I don't feel too bad about it, Pedro is a popular name in Brazil so parents wanted to make it different thus they named me Pedro Henrique. I have some friends with their first names being Henrique or Enrique (same pronunciation) here in Australia and I feel so sorry for them as no one can pronounce it properly.
