    Default Kony 2012

Only forum that doesn't have a thread about it. smh
Kony 2012: The latest cause célèbre that has most likely taken your Facebook newsfeed by storm. But while few would criticize putting indicted Ugandan war criminal Joseph Kony in prison, the motives of the latest viral video campaign are less clear.

FGo to the Invisible Children homepage, and the goal of Kony 2012 seems simple enough:

“KONY 2012 is a film and campaign by Invisible Children that aims to make Joseph Kony famous, not to celebrate him, but to raise support for his arrest and set a precedent for international justice.”

Scroll down, and a list of movers, shakers and policy-makers ranging from Lady Gaga to Bill Clinton let you know the Hollywood and Washington elite have taken this cause to heart.

On the surface, this is a simple black-and-white story: Joseph Kony, via the Uganda-based Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), has lead a violent campaign to set up a theocratic government at home, forcing enslaved child soldiers to commit unspeakable acts.

But dig a bit deeper, and one might want to think twice before donating to the Invisible Children charity.

For one, Invisible Children has blurred the line between charity and politics, advocating direct military action. They have also been accused of providing financial support to the Ugandan government’s military and the Sudan People’s Liberation Army, both of which have regularly been charged with human rights abuses.

The group denies the claim, saying “none of the money donated through Invisible Children ever goes to the government of Uganda. Yet the only feasible and proper way to stop Kony and protect the civilians he targets is to coordinate efforts with regional governments.”

The group has also been accused of being heavy on advocacy and weak on aid. Writing on the social media site tumblr.com, sociology and political science student Grant Oyston said, “As a registered not-for-profit, its finances are public. Last year, the organization spent $8,676,614. Only 32 per cent went to direct services (page 6), with much of the rest going to staff salaries, travel and transport, and film production. This is far from ideal for an issue which arguably needs action and aid, not awareness, and Charity Navigator rates their accountability 2/4 stars because they lack an external audit committee. But it goes way deeper than that.”

The real question is, why has Kony 2012 skyrocketed to the top of social media consciousness? Writing for Foreign Policy magazine, Uganda-based journalist Joshua Keating perhaps puts it best.

“It would be great to get rid of Kony. He and his forces have left a path of abductions and mass murder in their wake for over 20 years. But let's get two things straight: 1) Joseph Kony is not in Uganda and hasn't been for 6 years; 2) the LRA now numbers at most in the hundreds, and while it is still causing immense suffering, it is unclear how millions of well-meaning but misinformed people are going to help deal with the more complicated reality,” Keating writes.

Perhaps more alarmingly, Invisible Children’s viral media smash follows Barack Obama’s decision to deploy 100 troops to Uganda last October with the aim of “removing” Joseph Kony from the picture.

In fact, during a period of relative calm that has not been seen in years, Mark Kersten from Justice in Conflict says Uganda’s recently-discovered oil reserves, which “may produce between 2.5 billion to 6 billion barrels of oil…has been directly linked to the country’s security.”

While bringing Joseph Kony to justice would be commendable, it seems implausible his capture would do much to bring stability to conflict-ridden East Africa.

Just try telling that to the 27 million people who have watched Kony 2012 on YouTube and the millions more who will be posting and tweeting about it in the days to come.
    Your thoughts?

This is what sort of sparked it all which is not good. The video itself is a good piece of emotional porn but that's about it. It's honestly NOT worth the 30 minutes when you find out somethings about the organization that is doing this [Invisible Children].
First of all, the guy who made that film get's paid $90,000 a year. That's for him and his family. This does not include him paying costs for film equipment, video editting software, nor does it cover travel or accomodations whilst in anywhere else. Those are all covered under the ludicrous budgets that the Invisible Children organization actually deal with. Let's go to that now. Here are some expenses from CharityNavigator.:
Compensation of Leaders | % of Compensation relative to amount of money made by IC | Title
    $88,241 | 0.99% | Ben Keesey - CEO
    $89,669 | 1.00% | Jason Russell - Co-Founder/Filmmaker
    $84,377 | 0.94% | Laren Poole - Co-Founder/Filmmaker
    Revenue
    Total Contributions: $10,334,060
    Program Service Revenue: $3,423,351
    Total Primary Revenue: $13,757,411
    Other Revenue $7,769
    TOTAL REVENUE: $13,765,180
    Expenses
    Program Expenses: $7,163,384
    Administrative Expenses: $1,444,570
    Fundraising Expenses: $286,678
    TOTAL FUNCTIONAL EXPENSES: $8,894,632
Payments to Affiliates $0 Excess (Or deficit) for the year: $4,870,548
    Net Assets $6,584,811
As if that isn't bad enough, they've refused to Co-operate with the Better Business Bureau, Their transparancy rating is fairly low on Charity Navigator, and allegations of fraud. HuffingtonPost has an article on it here.
Besides, they make a fairly large point about sending money to the Ugandan Military. This is a big no no for a couple of reasons. First of all, Kony isn't even in Uganda. Funding a military that has no real authority over another country to LOOK in other countries, is a moronic idea to begin with. Secondly, the Ugandan military is already using this as an excuse to enter other countries and exploit resources from surrouding areas. The Government of Uganda is full of criminals that are worse than Kony himself. Not to mention the bloody PRESIDENT of Uganda is responsible for millions of deaths. Then you've got allegations coming out that Kony is already dead. The LRA (Konys ragtag bunch of assholes) isn't that large, or all that active.
The worst thing about Invisible Children (In my opinion) is that they lobbies for DIRECT MILITARY INTERVENTION IN AFRICA. After all of the terrorist hunts in the Middle East, and having troops stuck in Afghanistan and Iraq, don't you think that the people would have learned by now that having troops in another country to hunt one smart aleck isn't exactly the best idea? Especially when some of the Republicans believe that invading Iran is a fairly good idea at the moment. There are SERIOUS issues with this group, issues that people are overlooking. I will admit that at first I was already on Twitter and ready to lady at people about the injustice that's being served in other countries and then I decided to look into the organization. The information is there, and willing, but people are fearful to even look. Fearful, lazy, or just swept up by the movement. Injustice exists in the world. It is damn stupid, and it sucks donkey, but that's the nature of this planet at the moment. Humanity, since rising from the primordial ooze, has killed people over far less than anything you could imagine. Then there's the fact that if Kony is alive, and the ICC, or International Criminals Court, manages to put him on trial, what's it going to achieve? Numerous war criminals have stood trial before the ICC. This isn't a game of chess. You don't topple a pawn and move on. The pawns replicate. It's like fighting a hydra. If you slice off one head, more are going to pop up in it's place. You remove one player, and 10 others will appear. Hell, there's a case to be made that awareness driven ngos perpetuate the current state of afafairs and are an intergral part of the current system of global unfairness. They ovver placebos for guilty consciences and as such, they don't change anything. If you think of large entites such as Global Corporations, conglomorates and powerful nation states that capitalize on injustice, corruption and disorganization and exploit the poor for their resources and manpower, the best thing that could happen to them are programs such as this. There's a lot of reasons why Invisible Children has a good idea of what they're doing, but FAR too much on the opposite sides of the scales to tip myself (and no doubt others) into not bothering with this group and it's practices.

Personally I am critical to this, as I just can't see how they have a clear-cut goal in mind. So they want to make the man famous? Pursue him? But how? He left Uganda 6 years ago and the whole organization is withdrawn from the country and the people have moved on so to speak. Are you going to raid the neighboring countries with soldiers in the hope of breaking through the group's barrier of defense? What about the resistance they'll meet? Isn't it likely that they might be child soldiers, too? Are you going to cut them down as well?

To me it sounds as an irresponsible action that hasn't been thought through that well. As for Kony himself he IS searched after and will be put up to trail for violation against humanity among other crimes. To scale this up when it represents a conflict that was at its peak 6 years ago,, I don't get it. The Ugandian people themselves claim that they've just started farming again and building up their country. They have had an end to that brutal era, and doesn't necessarily want further engagement.

tl;dr I'm going to assume you're talking about that viral video I have yet to watch.

I thought this was the Kony thread? http://www.animeforum.com/showthread...-to-stop-a-war

Anyways I don't care, the reason is because it in no way, shape, or form affects me whatsoever. It's pretty annoying, everyone is saying they want to stop it and they're "activist" just because they watched a video, read or article, or liked a paged. To all the people in real life that start talking to Kony about me I ask them where Uganda is, almost all have no idea where to locate in a map. Oh yeah, I'm just going to drop this here.

    @Xey Oiz

Not my fault people don't know how to name threads. It's not like I click every single thread, especially when they aren't direct enough. But thanks for posting the original link anyways.

I kind of agree with what you're saying. Supportive my arse. People just follow these fads because "it's what's "cool" these days". It's like the people who wear Che shirts and I bet they have no idea about who he is and what he ever did.

Don't forget the peole who are buying the shirts are bigger idiots. Again, supportive my arse.

To be honest, I don't really care much for this guy named "Kony". Yes there are children dying, but hasn't there always been? I mean I do feel bad for them, but it's not like anything anyone says on the internet is going to change anything. If they were really working hard to find this dude, they would have found him already, but they aren't. In a year, people aren't going to remember this at all because its not a "hot topic" anymore.

Its a nice gesture. But we've seen this pattern before. Over the years, time and time again Africa has had problems like this. The most recent, and current, genocides, mass murders, etc, have all occurred in Africa. The Congo, Somalia, Rwanda, Darfur, the list is long, and time and time again all efforts to help arent exactly 'helping.' The United States and UN has intervened before, but lets face facts here, you cannot just enter every country and expect them to adopt Democracy, or whatever you believe in.

And for the sake of argument, doesnt it seem almost fascist that the only way to fix these problems is through military intervention? That is to say, in order to help them, we must kill them?
