These laws do make sense. There is (and more so was, HIV hit the gay community like a bomb in the '80s, when unprotected casual sex was the norm) a strong over-representation of HIV among homosexual men. And HIV has a long period in which it's dormant, symptom-less and can't be detected with tests.

They may be a bit harsh, but they are quite justified.

I don't care about gay people and I'm against giving them more special rights and privileges than they already have.

True. I didn't think about that it's sympton-less for quite a long time.

Then there's all those annoying, shameless indecent exposure parades where no cop dares to stop them because they'd be hollering "discrimination", but if I walk around topless in town, I'd get fined real easy.
So yeah, if you want special papering because today you chose to be gay, I say get off my yard and go get a life.

I didn't know that gays have rights, I think they all should have equal with straights and others. But I don't see why they need or have "special rights". It sounds retarded.
I also agree with you totally about the equal part. Thank you.

Define "act like equals". Because that's almost in line with what Michelle Bachman said about gay marriage; that gays can get married...if they married someone of the opposite gender.

Gays don't have all of the same rights as others. People are usually fine with what a person is doing (getting married, adopting a kid, giving blood, etc) until their sexuality is revealed. Then things change.

The borderline "flaming" parades certainly don't help (it is only pushing the stereotype onto people), but then again, it shouldn't really matter at the end of the day.
    This is my war face.

This is what happens to trolls who mess with me.

Shhh. I like having a rational reason to not donate blood.

    Edit:

Woah. Didn't read the posts above. You guys know the gay pride parades don't like, ban straight people, right? We have parades for many reasons, not just for being gay. At special events people do go a bit crazy, I've been to an anime expo where a girl was dressed as Sepiroth, no shirt on and everything, with many guys taking photos with her having her boobs out.

I'm not endorsing the flaming, overly camp guys who put it all on, it's annoying when people expect you to be skipping along, singing songs about being gay and staring at guys crotches all day. But, at the end of the day, it's an event, they can take their shirts off. If you want your shirt off, go along, or go to the beach. As with everywhere, it's timing and placement. No-one likes people walking around shirtless, gay, straight, bisexual or otherwise.

i think that gay people should have the SAME rights, but not MORE rights.

    for example.....
if a gay guy got mad at me and said "you are just a straight p.o.s.", then that's just a normal insult.
however if i got mad at a gay guy and said "you are just a homo p.o.s.", then suddenly i have committed a hate crime.

No, it's still a "hate" crime if you're called a straight p.o.s, it just doesn't usually get called out on being a hate crime.

-This part not aimed at the above-

I still don't think "gay" should be an insult, or a way of saying things are crap. At the end of the day, everyone deserves to have equal rights. It is pretty hard for people to be not straight in a lot of ways, we shouldn't be making it harder.

Taking 'gay' as in insult is not making no sense of all. Well, if you were homosexual and someone using the word gay on you. Then i'm not sure how you would feel. If I was a homosexual, I would not take it offensive what so ever.

I'm not saying it about me, it's when I hear kids going "YOU'RE GAY" and the other kid gets upset at being called gay. They shouldn't be getting upset about it, because it should be like if you called someone who was white "black" or something.

We know that they don't ban straight people. Its just that the overly flaming parades certainly don't help the gay community. For example, here's Tim Cook, the new CEO of Apple:

As most people know, he's gay. Some say he's one of the most powerful gay men in this country. But for some people, the "news" that he was gay was a bit shocking...which is weird because 1) most people knew this already and 2) its not as if gay men have special marks that reveal them as being gay.

However, here's a picture from a San Francisco gay pride parade in 2009:

Now, most people know that the vast majority of gay people do not look or act like this; to assume that they do is to live within the realm of stereotypes. But if a gay pride parade comes through and most people are dressed up this way, then the stereotype is confirmed...over and over and over again. If the only thing I think gay men do is run around in dresses and then during a parade, I actually SEE gay men running around in dresses, then my suspicions weren't exactly proven wrong.

It really shouldn't matter, not when people (should) have the power of rational thought and be able to grant others the same rights as everybody else. But when gay pride parades emphasize how different gay people are from other people, instead of how they are the same, then it really isn't helping.

I'm gonna give a short response to this because we actually had an ENTIRE thread dedicated to this.

Homosexuals don't own the word "gay"; they never have, and I doubt that they ever will. Its great that they have embraced the word, but don't expect me to stop using the word "gay" as an insult.

Why? Because when I say that something is "gay", I don't mean that something is "acting like a homosexual" (unless there is some context that says otherwise). There are a bunch of definitions of the word "gay" in popular culture that to expect that I mean "homosexual" every time I say the word "gay" is to be incredibly arrogant (and to think that people "own" this old as hell word even more so).

I never said anyone "owned the word gay". It means happy. Why use a positive word as a negative? Just like faggots are a type of meatball thing. But, you can say faggot as a negative word because they're disgusting.

Gay pride parades are similar to anime expos/cons. It creates a negative image of anime fans. Such as this cosplayer:

Think of all the images of fat, bearded old man doing nasty things over the image of a lolita anime girl. That's what people view anime/manga fans as.
Things like this will happen in every community. People have stereotypes about races, furries, anime fans, gays, lesbians, straights, etc. There are stereotypes about every living creature on the planet, including animals. It's nature.

At the end of the day, everything on this planet has as much right as any other thing to do what they want. It's only governments rulings that stop us, and really, if I want to marry someone I love, I can. I don't care what's in their pants. They're still human, and at the end of the day, we're all the same. We're all made up of the same stuff and are we really going to let a few hormones in the womb determine our rights in future?

You know what I wish for? A world where we are all seen as people and are not classified into little groups like "Gay". We're all human beings, and we all deserve the basic rights given to us for being human.

It seems there's only one type of person who is "Normal" and everyone else is just "extra" it's sickening, and incredibly backward. I'd think by this time people would realize that just because someone is different from you, doesn't make them any less of a person or any less deserving of rights.

    Default Re: Gay Rights?

I will share this article. And simply put it as translation can be and issue and two, adultery was more of a big issue. Not so much with homosexuality being a sin.

“Creates the Illinois Religious Freedom Protection and Civil Unions Act…. Provides that 2 persons may form a civil union if they: are not related by adoption or blood in any manner that would bar a civil union; are not in another civil union or marriage with any other living person; and are not under 18 years of age. Provides that: protections, benefits, and responsibilities of partners in a civil union are the same as those granted to spouses in a marriage…. and a civil union between 2 persons of either the same sex or the opposite sex licensed, officiated, and registered under the Act is valid in this State.”

Proposed bills like this one really ruffle the feathers of conservative evangelical Christians and their fundamentalist cousins, the groups collectively known as the “Religious Right”. They insist that the Bible says homosexuality is a sin.

But does the Bible really state this? The short answer is, actually, no.

This is not a claim, however, that can be discussed without some honest empirical evidence to back it up, despite the right-wing proclamation of the opposite. For the long answer, let’s take a little tour of the Bible and see what it really says.

First, it should be pointed out that the sayings and teachings of Jesus make up the core of Christian belief. Homosexuality, however, is never addressed by Jesus in any of the canonic Gospels. What Jesus does talk about over and over again is oppression. Whether it was of the poor by the rich or of the powerless by the powerful.

One of the few stories about Jesus that mentions any kind of sexual sin is found in chapter 8 in the Gospel of John. Here we find a woman who had committed adultery (forbidden by the 7th commandment), but Jesus was not concerned with her sexual indiscretion. His focus was on the townspeople who wanted to stone her to death. So even in this case of sexual sin (adultery, in this case, that was clearly forbidden by Jewish law), Jesus came to the defense of the “sinner.” When he challenged the mob by saying “whoever was without sin should throw the first stone”, the people went away one by one. Then he told the accused woman that he did not condemn her. Jesus stood up for the persecuted.

There are only a handful of passages in the bible that actually deal with same-sex intercourse and none of them deal with it directly. It is always in a larger context of ritual purity, rape, prostitution or pedophilia; in other words, they are presented in situations where someone is being exploited or sexually abused. Same-sex intercourse is never addressed in the context of two mutually-consenting adults.

One passage is in the story of Sodom and Gomorrah (Genesis 19). In it, God hears that there are more than a few indiscretions transpiring, so he sends a couple of angels to see what is happening. The person who meets them is Lot and he invites them to stay in his house and have dinner.

Then, a bunch of men from Sodom come and knock on Lot’s door. They say, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us, so that we may know them.”

Now, Hebrew is a funny language. The word for “know” (yada) can mean literally “to know someone”, or it can mean “to have sex with someone”. So at best, these Sodomites are saying they want to meet and literally get to know who Lot’s guests are; and at worst, they’re saying they want to have sex with Lot’s guests. Since we can assume that God’s angels aren’t interested in a casual hook-up with these guys, what the Sodomites are really saying is that they want to rape Lot’s guests.

Lot verifies this with his response: “I beg you, my brothers, do not act so wickedly.”

The wicked act in this story is not same-sex intercourse. It is rape. Rape is a horrific act that should definitely be condemned. But same-sex intercourse between consenting adults should not for a very simple reason: it hurts no one.

Let’s look at some other passages.

Leviticus 18.22 says, “You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination.” (NRSV) And Leviticus 20.13 says, “If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall be put to death; their blood is upon them.” (NRSV)

The word “abomination” in these passages is not a very good translation. The Hebrew word toevah means something that is ritually unclean and it was used in lots of other contexts, particularly dietary laws. Pork is toevah. A lot of Christians who try to use these passages to condemn gay people overlook the fact that they, too, are toevah because of the bacon they had for breakfast. Bloody meat also is toevah, so that medium rare steak you had for dinner last week also made you unclean.

The fact is, Leviticus forbids a lot of questionable things that by today’s standards, most Christians ignore. For example, Leviticus 9.27 states, “You shall not round off the hair on your temples or mar the edges of your beard.” (NRSV) So, according to this, a shave and a haircut are an “abomination” as well. It really depends on how you look at it, etymologically.

That’s it for the Hebrew Bible (or the Old Testament). Those are the only passages that mention same-sex intercourse and, as we can see, they were all in larger contexts of rape and ritual purity, not in the context of two consenting adults.

Now, let’s examine what the Christian scriptures (or New Testament) say.

All of the Christian scriptures that seem to address same-sex intercourse are attributed to one person: the apostle, Paul.

In his first letter to the Corinthians, he writes,“Do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived! Fornicators, idolaters, adulterers, male prostitutes, sodomites, thieves, the greedy, drunkards, revilers, robbers—none of these will inherit the kingdom of God.” (1 Corinthians 6.9, NRSV)

And in his first letter to Timothy, Paul writes, “Now we know that the law is good, if one uses it legitimately. This means understanding that the law is laid down, not for the innocent but for the lawless and disobedient, for the godless and sinful, for the unholy and profane, for those who kill their father or mother, for murderers, fornicators, sodomites, slave traders, liars, perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to the sound teaching that conforms to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which he entrusted to me.” (1 Timothy 1.10, NRSV)

The word in both of these passages that is translated into English as “sodomite” is the Greek word arsenokoitais. It is a very tricky word to translate because Paul seems to be the only person ever to have used it. It is literally not found anywhere else to our knowledge in ancient Greek writings. A literal translation of this word would be a man with many beds or the more slang and vulgar version, a man who likes to f*ck. This implies simply a promiscuous person—not a gay person.

Since the meaning of arsenokoitais is more than a little vague, responsible translators (such as in the NRSV) have used the similarly-vague English word “sodomite”. But even sodomy is losing its sexually vague meaning as it has begun to evolve into a word for anal intercourse (which has only added to the confusion of this issue). A better word for modern translations might be “{word meaning one who engages in sexual acts for financial compensation has been redacted}”, but this word unfortunately usually implies a female whereas Paul’s passages refer specifically to men. There is simply no word in the English language that means “male sl*t”. All of this is useful, however, to illustrate the sexist bias our culture gives to men. Promiscuous women are called sl*ts whereas promiscuous men are called studs?

I only read the bit of that where it says the bible doesn't say gay is a sin.

Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind, it is an abomination: they shall surely be put to death. Their blood shall be upon them.
    Leviticus 18:22
It doesn't directly say it's a sin, but it does say to kill gays.

Please tell me you aren't being serious.

If Christianity is somehow true Adam and Eve being Adam and Eve means nothing. Adam and Eve were the only humans, and they would have to mate to continue on humanity.

That's not even remotely relevant to today's world where we have a great deal of overpopulation.

And no, I'm not going to attempt to change my natural sexual urges for some 2000 year old book of which we have no idea what the original even really said and of which our current translations are full of mistranslations.

I have already tried to change my sexuality, by the way. It doesn't work that way.

And I'm convinced that the Bible even says what the homophobes so desperately want it to say. They don't actually read it, they just pull out random verses that they interpret to say what they want it to, and in the end, they completely lose the context of what it actually originally was in. Back when I was a Christian I actually looked this stuff up, and many of the verses they put out are referring to specific things, like male prostitution. But they would never see it in that context. They never actually read their Bible to begin with.

No true Christian would be rallying against homosexuality like these ones are. I'm tired of it, they're always there to push down groups that are trying to gain their rights and they claim it all to be a 'religious belief'. Please, lets stop listening to them. God's wrath has not come down upon us for giving rights to former slaves and women. For those 'Christians', the Bible is just a tool to hide behind because they're so prejudiced they can't understand the thought of giving those who are different from them the rights they deserve.
