Same here man. Being more suited for the job and handing in lots of applications are good, but are you making it look/feel like you really want the job? Are you regularly checking up on these places? And did you answer the questions they asked you in a way where it makes you a likely consideration? Not that I'm saying you haven't.

Personally, I'm pissed too that I've handed in plenty of applications, check up on these places from time to time, and even live close to some of these places too! But they give the job to some noob, with less experience. The job market sucks and I'm sick of "hanging in there" when someone I know I can do better than gets the job over me. Some of these employers must be brain dead.
