    Default Sleeping Tricks

    Does anyone have tricks they use to fall asleep, to shut their brains off? I swear every night its the same for me, the minute I lay down my brain goes into over drive thinking about all the things I need to do, and I get super reactive to the slightest noise... it takes me ages to fall asleep.

    I have fans going for white noise, curtains that make it extra dark, and I try to cut off the caffeine and video games a couple of hours before bedtime. That helps most of the time. Otherwise, I lump it out until I go to sleep or I take a benedryl tablet to help me fall asleep. They tend to make me feel groggy though.

    Also, I tend to drink something like Ovaltine about an hour or so before I go to bed. That stuff makes me feel hella sleepy.

    Lol, caffeine doesn't keep me awake. I'm so far Into sleep debt and my body is so used to it, on a good day I can drink a can of coke right before bed. Darkness actually makes it hard for me to sleep lol, I think its part of my issues sometimes - my room is super pitch dark. I may try the fan thing for white noise though, if I can find one, thanks for the ideas. I try to avoid drugs or anything if I can.

    Sometimes ill sit in the dark and drink tea for like half an hour, and it helps me get to sleep and quiet my mind, but lately it hasn't been working.

    What is ovaltine? I wish earplugs would help me :P I hate the quiet. It freaks me out. When Im really desperate for sleep I put Earphones in with my ipod but it scares me dad so I try not to do that. Plus recently that seems to be working less and less too

    For some reason, I find it hard to sleep with ear phones. It's irritating when you move and I don't play music to lull me to sleep cause if I did. I'll just be singing till morning comes XD

    Try to keep as many electronics away from your bed as you can at night. Studies claim that the electrical current of plugged in devices can have an effect on our brains. (Can't remember what that is, though. ) Charging phones, computers, things like that. I also turn my phone to silent and turn it screen down so that I can't hear it or have the stupid little green blinky light bugging me.

    Also, try showering a bit before bed, and even changing your sheets if you need to. A hot shower and fresh sheets usually puts me out in about 10-15 minutes.

    When I'm having a particularly tough time settling down/getting to bed, I do a really simple muscle relaxation thing. Just tense up each part of your body from head to toe as hard as you can before releasing it and allowing yourself to relax and sink into the bed. It's amazing how tense one can be without even realizing it.

    Turn on your electric fan put it on its highest Wind speed. Point it directly at you and don't put on a blanket and lay on your bed and it feels so good it makes you go to sleep It works for me! NOTE: You'll go to sleep without a blanket. and it feels ~GOOD~

    I've always had a tough time falling a sleep since I can remember. And I've also always been a light sleeper. Footseps on the other side of the house will wake me up. I also seem to always have something on my mind, which doesnt help either.

    Sorry I cant actually offer advice though, and what little tricks I have you've already said dont work.

    One problem I have is that I am shift worker - I go through a 5 week rotation of nights and days. During the day its almost required for me to wear earplugs to sleep and I often also use an eye mask. I cant wear earplugs at night - wont hear the alarm on my cell phone, its just not loud enough with ear plugs. But when I am working nights I rarely ever sleep long during the day since my body isnt used to it, so I dont even set and alarm.

    At night I cant stand sounds from the TV or anything like that, but I'll tolerate fans if its hot in summer or cold in winter (blower on the wood stove). Outside of that I dont like any noise. Birds often wake me up early in the AM when they start chirping outside, especially if my window is open. There is a mockingbird that is always the first to start, I forget when since its been gone since fall, but somewhere around 3AM I think it was. I'm a nature lover but I really wanted to strangle that bird!

    That might work in the Philippines but here its a bit chilly for fans this time of year. I burn wood from my own land to cut down costs and also live more off the land, and my wood supply never got fully dry this year (rained all year) plus I'm a bit short on supply, so I've been keeping the house around 58-62F alot, it be rather chilly with a fan and without some thick blankets!

    I go to bed like an hour or two before I really feel sleepy, and then I read a good book or watch tv, that usually does the trick for me, it has happened a few time that I've woken up just to discover I never turned the tv off
