Not sure about physical defense tactics but I know a few ways to make yourself not look like an easy target.
Walk confidently. Even if you are lost, act as if you know where you are. If you have stuff with you keep it in a dark bag, preferably the type which you can wear across your body like a satchel. They appear less easy to grab. If you have control over the timings of when you are walking try to walk when there are a lot of people around so you can be in a crowd and hard to spot, or at least someone will hear you if you scream. Always keep your phone charged up and easy to grab. Most smart-phones have quick access to the emergency number on the front screen. If you can try to figure out where friends'/people you know's houses are on your route. That way if someone approaches you you can say oh actually this is my stop and knock on their door to be let in.
Try to walk on the opposite sidewalk to the travel of traffic. That way someone in a car has to lean across the passenger seat to talk to you.
Most importantly if you don't feel safe start heading somewhere where you do. Better to be over cautious than get yourself into trouble.
I have been approached multiple times when I have been on my own. Managed to be fine just by acting cool and getting to my house as fast as possible using phone GPS.
You will be fine, but it is wise to have an awareness of those around you. =]
Safe journeys.

Take my paranoia medication.
Hey look, Japan made a movie about me!
Prepare my pepper spray. >_>;
Be from Scotland.....
Well I know Muay Thai so a few knees to the body and elbows to the head would get my point across really quick.
Keep my head held high and show off a tough guy attitude, too bad that when they get close to me they'll probably easily see trough the act.
Strip naked and bend over.
Well the first thing you're gonna want to do is get wrist control. Wrist control is very important. That's usually when I pull out my gun.
It's fun to follow things that are following you, you guys should try it. ^_^

Hit them with whichever book I'm carrying at the time o.o Those things can hurt.
If that fails, wave the white flag. Or Retreat. Tehe.
Seriously though, I would probably hit them with my book, stab them with my pen (it's surprisingly pointy ^^), kick them in the groin, and run like hell. Not necessarily in that order.
I've got steel-hard knuckles, a great high kick, and a tendency to crush things within the space of ten minutes. It would be QUITE ill-advised to be following me.
My Wi-Fi, it's gone out...
My Wi-Fi, it's gone out . . .
i always keep a knife on me at all time excpt at school. so im good
but no onje follows a trench coat wearing otaku

You're like an angel from a picture book...
Demetri martin right? or is that dane cook?
I think what you ment to say was ask them if they would help you find your lost puppy and tell them to get in your van. lol
All that can be said, has been said.... We covered taking your medication, knowing fighting techniques, kick in the balls and run, lay down and just take it (although put a bit more vulgar way @Cantelope ), and just having a weapon like pepper spray or a knife. I think that's all the help we can give

“When you're surrounded by all these people, it can be lonelier than when you're by yourself. You can be in a huge crowd, but if you don't feel like you can trust anyone or talk to anybody, you feel like you're really alone.” -- Fiona Apple
Why does everybody immediately think of taking matters into their own hands? It's a disastrous idea. Call your nearest friend or family to tell them your location and keep them on the line until you get home. Or call the police (depending on the situation).

(You drive a car.) and 2) No one drives by slowly or follows you. (Though those that live there drive 10-20 over the speed limit.)
So I'm safe.
I agree with Datenshi. First thing someone should do when involved in a suspicious situation would be to call the cops and then friends/family to inform them of your location. Even a situation where you might have the advantage can easily be turned around by the introduction of extra attackers or weapons. But that's only when you actually are in danger, if it's just a weirdo following you I'll send a text to a friend in case I go missing and just walk away in a more hurried pace.

When someone asks me about where I live, only one thing comes to mind:
Anyway, I don't see why anyone would want to jump me; I'm practically invisible to everyone, and I prefer it that way. Not to mention I'm always in simple baggy clothes, so no one would suspect that I have any decent amount of money on me.
But during those eerie foggy nights in the cold dark alleyways where I always have the nagging suspicion that someone is watching or following me, I usually break out my phone (or something shaped like it; no one can tell in the dark :P) and pretend that I'm talking to someone. I have limited texting and calling, so staying on the phone for hours at a time would end up being really expensive. :/
Sometimes I like to pick up some small or medium size stone. Just in case.
I rarely post, yo.
I just run as quick as I can to my home and call someone (Family or cops )
Because I know myself well enough that I won't notice anything is off until it's too late for that (headphones in, or just being spaced out...). Sometimes you literally have to smack me to make me pay attention (or try touching my cellphone/Ipod. I notice that really quick.)
Stay in the light when walking at night, keep a distance from parked/stopped cars when crossing the street, carry my keys fanned out in my fist... Oh yeah, no headphones while walking! At least not very loud anyway, and not both at the same time.
put on a broad Glaswegian accent and shout "****in' 'mon then!" at regular intervals.
Dude... Im Asian the second I realize their following me ill chop their car in half ^.^
Serious Answer: Ill make a run for it and hope to see another day
