Default It's that time again... DST

Just a friendly reminder that it's that time again. Yes, Daylight Savings Time. That time, for those of us who are required to, to mess with our clocks yet again. This time we "Fall Back" an hour. So don't forget to set your clocks back tonight!

***And for the record, claims that it gives farmers "more time" is a crock of bologna. They go from dawn to dusk no matter what time it is. Some beyond that if they have proper lights. And cows don't tell time the same way we do. They go by the angle of sun. At dawn, they start to wake up, and at dusk they start to settle in for bed. That's the way it is.***

It's not really about the farmers. It's about saving electricity. The more our waking hours are aligned with sunlit hours, the fewer lamps we need to turn on. It may not seem like that much, but on a national scale, it does make quite a difference.

Actually it used to... But not anymore...

With the rapid increase of technology and the invention of A/C.. People stay in doors and run A/C or Heater. Use tons of appliances. Actually a lightbulb isn't hardly a reason anymore with the energy saving ones.

Huh? A/C and heating is not affected by how light it is outside.

But most of the population would rather stay in on a hot day or freezing day because we have AC and heaters. Which back in time did not exist. Running these appliances alone = cost of running dozens of lightbulbs. Watch video it explains it..

We use so many things that cost twice as much energy to use than lightbulbs in todays time than what people used in the times DST was originally put to use. So it hardly equals any benefits.

I don't follow this argument. Yes, other things also cost energy, more so than lighting, but cutting down on lighting is still saving energy. Even reducing power consumption by half a percent (I see figures between .5% and 3%), that's a lot of power.

HOW? You still have the same amount of sunlight hit earth. The earth suddenly doesn't lose sunlight and get lighter or darker for an hour.

Even though you can wait to turn your lights on later in the afternoon during summer but in turn you have to turn them on earlier in the morning. Where as winter you get to turn them off later in the morning but you have to turn them on earlier in the evening. It makes no difference on how you use your lightbulbs now and days since people are up at all hours where as back then people just mainly worked daylight hours.

^^^ this is confusing to understand.

Say during summer I catch the bus at 6.. Well I'm waiting in the dark so my porch light has to be on and wont be turned off till 7... But in the winter it's cracking dawn at 6 so I can turn it off as I wait.

In the summer maybe I will wait until 9 to turn on my porch light ... But in winter I turn it on at 8 in the afternoon.

    So summary..
    summer is Early morn/Later afternoon
    winter is Later morn/Early afternoon

    Makes no difference.

Actually, that is exactly what it does. The effect is more pronounced the farther away from the equator you are. I live fairly far up north, so near Christmas, I get around 4-5 hours of daylight (though it gets more extreme), on the other hand, in the summer, the sun almost never sets.

Though farther south, this effect only shifts sun hours slightly (so that it's dark in the morning when people get up).
Even farther south, this is barely noticeable. We're speaking minutes of difference over the year, which is why they don't have DST on Hawaii. They would probably not have it in any part of the southern half of the US, if it wasn't for how this would mess up the time zones even worse than they already are.

No :/ If you were to still get 4-5 hours of sunlight a day even without DST.... manmade time shifting is not some magical being that determines how much light hits the earths surface....

I get the same amount of daylight in the winter as I do in the summer. It's just I get to experience it more in the morning and less of it in the evening if it's winter or I get to experience it more in the evening and less in the morning if it's summer. Either way the same amount of light hits earths surface regardless of if the US and some other parts of the world decides on their own that time goes forward or backwards.

Not how much hits the surface, but when it hits the surface. If it can be aligned as much as possible with the hours most people are awake or at work, power is saved.

Why?? A lot more power is used while a person is awake than it is when a person is sleeping. They don't have to have their TV, computers, other misc. devices on. They are not cooking food in a microwave or photocopying mass papers for their job. There are more costly ways to use power than a lightbulb which actually isn't costly at all. And now and days people automatically use them even if it's light outside. Schools keep theirs on all day even with the sunlight.. business, restaurants..

There is providing to be little power saving with a reasoning of a simple lightbulb. Which really only saves a general household up to 4 dollars. Which really isn't a lot because households waste more than 4 dollars by throwing away bad groceries that expire before eating

What the hell? We're back to this again? The power gain is from lightbulbs. Only lightbulbs. The rest remains constant regardless of DST. But on a national scale, reducing lighbulb use amounts to a reduction in power consumption of order of magnitude 2%. That is a big number.

But it doesn't reduce it... People use lightbulbs all day long regardless of if it's light outside.

Just because in the summer you don't have to turn your outdoor light or streetlights on until later you still have to turn them on earlier in the morning if you were to be up at that hour.

Say you get 14ish hours of sun every day [least I do] In the summer the streetlights would be on for 10ish hours in the summer. Well in the winter they'd still be on for 10ish hours. So in the summer they'd be on from 9AM to 7PM while in winter they'd be on from 8AM to 6PM... The time the lightbulbs are on is the same. Not to mention every business, school, restaurant keeps their lights on during the day [as do most households anyways. Most only turn them off while not in the room]... So it still doesn't balance out because you're still using an excessive amount of lightbulbs in the day anyways.

BTW. Where I've read it only saves 0.02% that a looong ways short of .2% Doing something else would be more beneficial if that was the only goal

Wouldn't turning off lights and unused appliances save as much if not more than DST? Sadly, I think more people comply with DST than turning off the light when they leave the bathroom...

And in the beginning, DST didn't exactly save energy, it just allowed the government to re-allocate it elsewhere, i.e. WWI and WWII. Civilians would be given "coupons" to purchase their allotment of lamp and heating oil and such while a bulk of the national supply went to the military. You even needed those allotment coupons to buy bread, cheese, and meat. Back then it was just plain prudent to adjust the time so that you were working with the sun. Now a days, the world is up 24/7. My own hubby works night shift and I keep his schedule. DST is not the most practical thing anymore.

All I can attest to DST it screws with my internal clock...even with an extra hour I still get up at the same time.

DTS does not really affect anything. People fast forwarding or delaying time the planet doesnt care about.

DST was last week already, and I wish DST wouldn't exist anymore; it's useless and only makes my afternoon shorter.

No, in the US they extended to so that it starts two weeks early in the spring and ends one week later in the fall, making it three weeks longer here.

Otherwise, I agree with you. It only serves to mess up my body's processes, and my body is rather fickle to begin with.

Oh hey! I read an article on CNN that claims petroleum/gas companies support DST legislation stuff. Apparently, when we have more daylight after work, we tend to drive to more places and spend more money on junk we don't need or can't afford. No wonder this bogus thing still continues...

    Here's a link if you care. ^_^
